After confrontation with ICE official, hundreds walk out of "inSecure Communities" forum in VA

On August 24, 2011, community members from Arlington, Va marched to a forum about the so-called "Secure Communities" program. After numerous speeches denouncing the program, two local immigrants with deportation orders confronted Marc Rapp, who oversees Secure Communities, demanding that he shut down the program all together. Hundreds then stood up and walked out of the meeting in defiance of the Task Force, which they called a "sham".

Manu Chao in Arizona for NDLON

Last year, Arizona passed Senate Bill 1070, the beginning of a wave of the most anti-immigrant legislation the US has not seen in generations. The passage of SB 1070 Arizona dramatically expanded police powers to stop, question and detain individuals for not having proper identification, a move that encourages racial profiling and legitimizes intolerance. While in Arizona, Manu Chao visited the perimeter fence of the notorious jail facility known as Tent City', which was conceived by Sheriff Arpaio, and where inmates are forced to suffer degrading treatment and to endure the extreme temperature range of the desert by living outside in tents. Manu Chao, along with bandmate Madjid Fahem, serenaded the walls of the jail with a heartfelt rendition of his song 'Clandestino'. This version was captured on film by filmmaker Alex Rivera, whose work strives to draw attention to the Latin-American community in the US. The footage was produced by the National Day Labourer Organising Network (NDLON) For more infos visit www.altoarizona.com

La Bici Digna Presentation (ENG)

Los Angeles. July 2010 In 2008, City of Lights was founded to increase visibility of cyclists of color, to provide legal rights and safety trainings, and to empower these cyclists so that they may advocate on their own behalf in their communities. Along with the National Day Labor Organizing Network (NDLON), the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), and the Popular Education Institute of Southern California (IDEPSCA), City of Lights began its legal rights and safety workshops for day laborers, as well as host bike rides. In 2009, the Bicycle Kitchen began offering mechanic workshops to day laborers at CARECEN. Based on its success, people began discussing establishing a permanent location at a day laborer center. By October of 2009, IDEPSCA offered a space at their Downtown Community Job Center in LA's Garment District. With tools and used parts from the Bicycle Kitchen and donations from businesses and individuals, workshops at the space began; with day laborers, Bicycle Kitchen members, and City of Lights volunteers working side-by-side. They named themselves "La Bici Digna". The day laborers are the volunteers, teaching themselves bike mechanics in alliance with other volunteers and knowledgeable day laborers. Day laborers and volunteers articulate their visions for the space through small meetings and assemblies. In these assemblies, as consensus decision-making process, laborers develop as collective members and decision makers, creating the future of the ...

Arpaio's America IS NOT Our America

We have reached a new phase in our struggle for justice and dignity in Maricopa County, Arizona and in other communities suffering severe civil rights abuses due to the failure of United States immigration policy. The nation has watched with disbelief as Sheriff Joe Arpaio has carried out a systematic reign of terror in the name of immigration enforcement, but directed against all communities of color in his jurisdiction. In the process, he has become a symbol of abuse, bigotry, and intolerance. The Obama Administration's recent endorsement of Sheriff Arpaio - through renewal of his 287(g) authority - is an affront to this nation's struggles for equality and justice. PLEASE GO TO NDLON.ORG FOR MORE INFO.

Salvador Reza - Arrested Without Cause

Human rights leader and organizer of the Phoenix-based PUENTE Movement, Salvador Reza, was targeted and wrongly arrested on Friday, July 30th, by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. At around 3:30 am the next morning, Salvador Reza was arraigned. During Reza's appearance before the night court judge, the county prosecutor stated, "I did not see that this rose to the level of probable cause." Reza's attorney immediately replied, "Your honor, I just heard the prosecutor tell the court that there's not enough evidence here to suggest that Mr. Reza committed a crime. I ask that the charge be dismissed and he be released immediately." Reza was being charged with "obstructing a judicial proceeding." The judge replied, "I do not have enough information to find probable cause in this matter, sir" telling the county attorney. However, the Judge declined to dismiss the charge, but released Salvador Reza on his own recognizance and set his court date for August 18th. When Human Rights Organizers are targeted and unlawfully arrested, it becomes apparent that the MCSO is operating a politically motivated campaign to silence opposing voices, those that are exposing their unscrupulous practices. The US Department of Justice has been investigating Arpaio for civil rights abuses for over a year, and there's also a federal grand jury in Phoenix looking into MCSO and Arpaio for criminal abuse of power.
