One NOAA - the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is the United States government's oldest scientific agency, with roots stretching back to the early 1800s. In 1970 many smaller government agencies came together to form NOAA and today, NOAA's work reaches from the bottom of the sea to the surface of the sun, and it touches every aspect of our daily lives. Among the many responsibilities of NOAA are the mandates to protect our coasts, forecast our weather, monitor our atmosphere, manage our fisheries, explore our ocean, chart our waterways, understand our climate, and conserve our maritime heritage. NOAA Ocean Acidification Demonstration

Ocean Acidification is a global-scale change in the basic chemistry of oceans that is under way now, as a direct result of the increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are just beginning to understand the impacts of Ocean Acidification on life in the ocean. The moniker osteoporosis of the sea, gives you a hint about some of its impacts. To learn more about ocean acidification, please visit www.pmel.noaa.gov

The 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

The 2010 Hurricane Season tied with 1887 and 1995 having the third highest storm count on record with 19 named storms. But short-term weather patterns dictate where storms actually travel and in many cases this season, that was away from the United States. The jet stream's position contributed to warm and dry conditions in the eastern US and acted as a barrier that kept many storms over open water. Also, because many storms formed in the extreme eastern Atlantic, they re-curved back out to sea without threatening land. This movie shows GOES-13 infrared imagery from June 1 through November 30, the official extents of the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

NOAA Helps USS New York Clear Bridge

NOAA's "air gap" technology received the ultimate test on the morning of June 27. The technology passed with flying colors as the new US Navy LPD ship, the USS New York, sailed down the Mississippi River, clearing the underside of the Huey P. Long Bridge just north of downtown New Orleans by 64 centimeters (2.1 feet). The San Antonio-class $1 billion naval vessel, built in part from steel salvaged from the World Trade Center towers, sailed downriver, heading out for a month of sea trials. The Other Carbon Dioxide Problem

Fundamental changes in seawater chemistry are occurring throughout the world's oceans. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) from humankind's industrial and agricultural activities has increased the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. The ocean absorbs almost a third of the CO2 we release into the atmosphere every year, so as atmospheric CO2 levels increase, so do the levels in the ocean. Initially, many scientists focused on the benefits of the ocean removing this greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. However, decades of ocean observations now show that there is also a downside — the CO2 absorbed by the ocean is changing the chemistry of the seawater, a process called ocean acidification. This change in the ocean's chemistry will have profound effects on life in the ocean, and those who depend on it.

NOAA Weather Radio - Severe Weather Warnings

The remnants of tropical storm Fay spawned several tornado and flash flood warnings today (8/26/2008). I recorded some of these using my Radio Shack PRO-94 (no bloody A, B, or C) scanner. I used a cable to connect the headphone jack of the scanner to the line-in on the PC's sound card for better sound quality. I had to relocate the scanner toward the end of the clip because my PC was causing too much interference. NOAA weather radio stations recorded were WXJ-21 and WXL-56.

NOAA-N Prime Launch

The Delta II carrying NOAA-N Prime lifted off 6th February, 2009 at 2:22 am Pacific time from Space Launch Complex-2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The countdown proceeded smoothly throughout the night and early morning. Neither the spacecraft nor the United Launch Alliance Delta II launch vehicle experienced any technical issues, and the weather conditions remained favorable. The NOAA-N Prime satellite, built for NASA by Lockheed Martin, will improve weather forecasting and monitor environmental events around the world. NOAA-N Prime is the fifth and last in the current series of five polar-orbiting satellites with improved imaging and sounding capabilities. The satellite will collect meteorological data and transmit the information to NOAA's Satellite and Information Service, which processes the data for input to the National Weather Service for its long-range weather and climate forecasts. Forecasters worldwide also will be able to access the satellite's images and data. NOAA-N Prime has sensors that will be used in the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking System to monitor for distress signals around the world.
