Middle class sprawls in Nairobi, Kenya

Downtown Nairobi is in stark contrast to the images of famine and war that often represent coverage of Africa. Kenyas middle class has grown to 10 percent of the urban population — or 1.5 million people — making Kenya home to one of the largest middle class populations in sub-Saharan Africa. Government deregulation stimulated economic growth and turned Nairobbery — a former nickname for the city — into a booming economic center. Nairobi reflects this trend with multinational businesses, towering office buildings and a growing middle class. Worldfocus correspondent Martin Seemungal and producer Yuval Lion report from Nairobi on middle class Kenyans, who are educated, optimistic and upwardly mobile. More at worldfocus.org

Nairobi car attacks

www.ntv.co.ke Do you park your car in Nairobi's central business district? Have you had your side mirrors or indicators stolen? Most people who have don't bother reporting to the police, as it turns out, it's a multimillion-shilling business that is denying the government much needed revenue. And as Robert Nagila reports the city council of Nairobi says it's the responsibility of the police to enforce the law.

Watering Nairobi

www.ntv.co.ke Water remains a key concern even here in the county of Nairobi where only 40 per cent of residents have piped water. A new master plan for the city is now seeking to connect the whole city to some source of running water. That will not be an easy task, earlier i spoke to the people behind the plan and they are convinced, water for all, is only a matter of time.

Passengers,motorists stranded on Nairobi-Mombasa highway

www.ntv.co.ke Hundreds of passengers were on Friday night stranded for almost 15 hours, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, after a trailer blocked the road. The snarl-up started at around 5pm and persisted to about 4am. Some passengers traveling to and from Mombasa had a hectic time trying to console young children crying who could not stand the long wait. Majority of the passengers were forced to sleep on the buses, while others cut their journey short and returned to the city centre. Heavy trailers on the highway passed with difficulties and consequently took long period passing the scene and hence worsening the jam caused by the trailer. Residents and the passengers urged the state to repair the road, which is in poor state.

Ernie Kovacs - The Nairobi Trio "Solfeggio" - ABC Television Network Videotaped Version

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Although it is posted all over YT, no tribute site would be complete without Kovacs' signature comedy sketch. Of course, it's The Nairobi Trio's syncopated rendition of Robert Maxwell's "Solfeggio". As if you didn't already know, the costumed gorilla with the cigar in his mouth is Ernie. The pianist's curly blond locks suggest that it is his wife Edie Adams. The timpanist has never been identified but, in this particular performance, his apparent small stature suggests it is Kovacs' sidekick the late Bobby Lauher. At other times, the role was reported to have been played by Ernie's best friend Jack Lemmon, Milton Berle, and the Chairman of the Board himself, Frank Sinatra.

Kenya: Driving In Nairobi City - 2010

Nairobi city has improved a great deal in terms of road networks in the last few years. But the residents have been buying more cars than the city's road expansions can cope with. Drivers don't respect road rules most of the time and this creates more traffic snarl-ups during rush hours. There are too many pedestrians in the streets and they cross streets at anyplace and not at the designated crosswalks. Most drivers stop at crosswalks to allow pedestrians cross, and this is a great improvement from years past. The matatus are a big mess because they pick up passengers at any point even if it poses danger to other motorists.

While the taskforce recommended that the post of Mayor be abolished, it wants the Governor to be the most influential office in the county. Now, in Nairobi, the battle for the Governor's position is already taking shape and has so far attracted at least six contenders. With a population of more than 3 million people, Nairobi County is Kenya's political and commercial capital, making the City's Governor an influential figure in the management of the affairs of the entire nation. Our Associate Editor Alex Chamwada takes a look at the battle for Nairobi and how the city's management will change under a devolved system of governance.
