July 26, 2010 marked the 20th Anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, a well-known mentally ill musician (otherwise known as "The Soloist"), formerly homeless, performed playing two instruments.

Nathaniel Ayers was aa Julliard-trained musician who found himself living on the streets of LA's Skid Row. His story--which brings to light the serious issue of mental illness in the United States--was captured in the book "The Soloist" by Steve Lopez and in an upcoming movie with Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. Recently, The California Endowment, a health foundation, presented a grant to the founders of the Nathaniel Anthony Ayers Foundation as it launches to fund the arts at mental health agencies and arts organizations that serve the mentally ill. Last week we all got together with cameras in hand to the Disney Music Hall and were joined by follow resident Mr. Nathaniel Ayers the subject artist of the popular hit film The Soloist. We also met up with another photography club headed by Mr. Ron Tally called Photographers and Digital Artist of Los Angeles. Nathaniel was very gracious and allowed everyone the opportunity to take photographs and get to exchange ideas and views. Ever since I saw this movie, I've been completely amazed and in love with it. The story of the reporter befriending a homeless musician was just so great that I needed to make a video of it, and the song just describes the whole movie very well. I tried to get the atmosphere of the movie in my video, which was kind of hard because all I had were the trailer and like two other clips, not the whole movie. It was a lot of fun, though. To all of you who haven't seen "The Soloist" yet: You should really watch it. It's one of those rare, special movies that are completely honest and free of stereotypes while still being touching and amazing. Also, it's not a happy-go-lucky feel-good-movie, but it still touches your heart and manages to give you a good feeling. Plus, we get Oscar-worthy performances of Downey Jr. and Foxx. When Lopez finds him, Ayers is homeless, paranoid, and deeply troubled, but glimmers of that brilliance are still there. Over time, Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Ayers form a bond, and Lopez imagines that he might be able to change Ayerss life. Lopez collects donated violins, a cello, even a stand-up bass and a piano; he takes Ayers to Walt Disney Concert Hall and helps him move indoors. For each triumph, there is a crashing disappointment, yet neither man gives up. In the process of trying to save Ayers, Lopez finds that his own life is changing, and his sense of what one man can accomplish in the lives of others begins to expand in new ways. Ron Robinson, a very talented Classical pianist, was kind enough to share his talent with us and accompanied Nathaniel. This was at the American Music Therapy Association Conference in San Diego, California in November. So many musicians played with Nathaniel and understood that he was NOT playing perfect, yet he had perfect passion. I believe everyone appreciated THE PASSION! Later he and Ron went to a concert at Disney Hall and had a great musical time. Thank you Ron!
