DJ Craze performs on the new Traktor Scratch Pro 2

*** Please note: Video contains lyrics that some people might consider explicit *** When it comes to matching the latest technology with world-class turntablism skills to produce next-level routines, Miami's DJ Craze is the ultimate choice. In this video, the 5x DMC World Champion showcases the power of the new Traktor Scratch generation by creating a live dubstep remix, controlled by his golden Technics turntables and two controllers. Kontrol X1 is used to play a live beat using one-shot drum samples in Traktor's new Sample Decks, while Craze also triggers various other samples and cue points with his custom white Maschine controller. A beat juggling section in the middle leads to the finale where Craze combines fast cue-point juggles and vocal samples with the integrated Traktor effects. All things combined, this latest Turntable Tricknology routine effectively highlights the vastly expanded creative potential of the new Traktor generation. Sound Design Tutorial w/ Native Instruments Kontakt: MIDI, Loop Slicing + Resampling

More info - bit.ly In this video tutorial, Dubspot Electronic Music Production and Sound Design instructor Evan Sutton demonstrates loop slicing and resampling in Native Instruments' Kontakt 5. The first order of business is to create a loop that you want to resample. For this first one, I recommend something melodic that is around 2 or 4 bars long. In the video, Ableton Live is being used to render (or 'rinse') the sequence to audio, and bring it into Kontakt. Any DAW will be fine for this technique, however the exporting functions will vary. To bring the audio into Kontakt, create a new instrument, and go under the hood by clicking on the wrench. Then, open the Mapping Editor, and drop the audio file over one key. The Mapping Editor is where Kontakt lets you handle samples and their mapping to key and velocity zones. The Wave Editor will let us customize and edit individual samples (sometimes called 'zones'). Once you've opened the Wave Editor, head on over to the Sync/Slice tab. This is where we handle beat syncing, as well as loop slicing. The idea here is to use a slicing function to cut the loop into multiple pieces, each of which will be assigned to an individual key. Using the Grid, we can set markers to tell Kontakt where exactly we'd like it to make slices in the loop. When your markers are in place, hit the Drag MIDI to Host button, and away we go. Now that the loop is sliced up, the fun can really begin. Kontakt has a sophisticated organizational system based ...

In this two-part video tutorial, Heinrich focuses on Massive's ability to create speech-like sounds, showing step by step how to create your own variations of the talking synth, or digital mouth harp. The Talking Stepper technique allows you to synthesize original sounds from scratch using Massive, and develop the sound further with the step sequencer, which allows you to make unique mechanical melodies. In part one, Heinrich shows you how to utilize the various parameters of Massive; showing you the basic building blocks, including Oscillator, Filter, Sample & Hold effect, Modulation Oscillator, and of course the Stepper sequencer (which can be selected from the LFO tab) and Performer. Sound Design Tutorial w/ Native Instruments Absynth 5: How to Create Heavy Synth Basslines

More info - bit.ly In this video tutorial, Dubspot Instructor and electronic musician Evan Sutton demonstrates basic modulation functions in Native Instruments' Absynth 5, which he uses to create a wide variety of bass sounds. - To get started, creating a new sound using the file menu in Absynth will take us to square one. Absynth has a tabbed interface, and we'll do the bulk of our sound programming in the Patch section. This is where we introduce modules such as oscillators and filters, as well as signal processors such as waveshapers, ring modulators, and frequency shifters. Our basic sound will consist of a double oscillator with two sawtooth waves that are detuned slightly. The second module we use will be a low pass filter. Once the cutoff frequency is opened up, it's time to create an envelope. Remember that by default, there are only envelopes for the amplitude of the three oscillator modules. To create a new envelope for the cutoff, right click on the cutoff frequency, and select Create a new envelope. Now that these basic functions are out of the way, it's time to have some fun. Adding more oscillators on the other channels, as well as waveshapers and effects can quickly take the sound into another dimension. Try creating envelopes for alternate destinations, such as pitch. The important thing to remember is that the toolkit for synthesis is a small one, and highly successful sound design comes down to clever routing. Have fun with this one. - Evan Sutton
