The JCB GT: The World's Fastest Backhoe

Capable of attaining speed up to 115 mph, the JCB GT is impressive to watch. But to jump behind this machine, you really need nerves of steel and a love of speed. The original JCB GT became the fastest backhoe in the world when it achieved a top speed of 114.6 mph, at the Santa Pod Raceway in England. The frame was designed to look like a backhoe, but the JCB GT was really a meticulously engineered racing machine. Neil Smith, The JCB GT backhoe driver, attained a blazing speed of 115 mph to earn a place in the record books as the fastest backhoe driver in the world.

Urban Politics, Urban Security

The new regime of urban security has been tracked back to the 9/11 events, but its origins are longer and deeper. As many theorists from Lefebvre onward have suggested, real estate investment in city building offers a means of displacing crises of capitalist accumulation from the industrial sector, and indeed the "Great Recession" beginning in 2007 exploded out from the nexus of finance capital and real estate which reached its apogee during the neoliberal moment of capitalist development. The hollowing out of one arena of state practices (social reproduction support) has, ironically, raised fears of a direct diminution of social security, not as government program but as everyday experience, and 9/11 became at best the excuse for a more direct securitization and militarization of urban life. This paper explores these issues drawing on the recent strategic police crackdown at the Toronto G20 protests, and asks what this means for urban politics during a period in which neoliberalism is "dominant but dead." Neil Smith is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Geography at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York where he was the founding Director of the Center for Place, Culture and Politics. He is also Sixth Century Chair in Geography and Social Theory at University of Aberdeen. His numerous authored and edited books include American Empire: Roosevelt's Geographer and the Prelude to Globalization which won several awards including the Los Angeles Times ...

Alice Cooper Chat With Snake (Old Grey Whistle Test Outtake) 1971

This is rare footage from an outtake clip from the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1971 when the Alice Cooper Group performed "Under My Wheels" and "Is It My Body." This one outtake is of Alice talking to the band's snake, Kachina, who was actually owned by the drummer, Neal Smith. Kachina is the snake that is on the cover of "Killer." She was the band's first snake and created huge controversy along with a change in rock stage shows. When the band first brought out the snake for "Is It My Body" the crowd was amazed and terrified at the same time. This is just one of the many stage acts the Alice Cooper Group had started.

January 25, 1998: The night God answered our prayers

The defending Super Bowl champion Packers took the opening kickoff and marched 76 yards in just over four minutes, scoring the first points on Brett Favre's 22-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman. The Broncos responded with a 10-play, 58-yard drive capped by Davis's 1-yard run to tie the game. Tyrone Braxton intercepted Favre two plays later, and John Elway scored on a third-and-goal play to begin the second quarter. Steve Atwater forced Favre to fumble three plays later, and Neil Smith recovered at the Packers' 33. Jason Elam converted a 51-yard field goal, the second longest in Super Bowl history, to give the Broncos a 17-7 lead with 12:21 left in the half. After an exchange of punts, the Packers produced a 17-play, 95-yard drive that consumed 7:26 and finished with Favre's 6-yard touchdown pass to Mark Chmura on third-and-5 with 12 seconds left in the half. Tyrone Williams forced and recovered Davis's fumble at the Broncos' 26 on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. However, the Broncos' defense kept the Packers out of the end zone as Ryan Longwell's 27-yard field goal tied the game with 11:59 left in the third quarter. After another exchange of punts, Elway's 36-yard pass to Ed McCaffrey keyed a 13-play, 92-yard drive capped by Davis's 1-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left in the third quarter. Tim McKyer recovered Freeman's fumble at the Packers' 22 on the ensuing kickoff return, giving the Broncos a golden opportunity, but Eugene Robinson ...
