Largest neodymium magnet in the world? [HD]

This video features my largest neodymium magnet which also happens to be one of the largest in the world. I haven't seen neodymium magnets larger than 6 inches (I've heard about thin 8 inchers). There is no need for a larger one so they never really bothered to make them or the equipment needed for a larger one. A lot of people ask what the magnet costed me. The normal prize for this magnet is 349 Euro which is around 470 US Dollars in today's exhange rates (february 2011). It is easy to get 10% discount and more is possible if you buy frequently like me. I still paid alot for this magnet though... [Update august 2011: The prize is now 799€. I guess neodymium is getting very expensive very fast! A lot of people have asked me why I would buy a 500$ magnet. I like to answer: Because it is now worth the double :-p] This was my first HD-video on Youtube. It was shot with a Canon HF10 in 1920 x 1080i AVCHD and edited on a Dell Studio XPS with Pinnacle Studio HD Ultimate Collection (version 14). The recorded sound is not so good in this video because of a lot of background noise. This is not the video camera's fault. I had to shoot this video with the camera far away from the magnet and then zoom in. This is to avoid any damage to the camera from the strong magnetic field, flying shrapnel etc. In more recent HD-videos I have recorded in 1080p, since Youtubes compressor hates interlaced formats and adds the digital artifacts you see in this video. Neodymium Magnets Magnetic Ball Spins for over five minutes LOW FRICTION BEARING

This video illustrates the low friction from a magnetic connection. The powerful Neodymium Magnets are rated at 87-112 pounds of pull force. I have smashed my fingers 4 times. They are really dangerous. The balls are regular steel ball bearings and are NOT magnets. The smaller ones are 3/4 inch and the large ones are 2 inch x 2 pound steel ball bearings. They become magnetized when entering the magnetic field. The further away from the original magnetic field, the lower resistance the steel balls experience. There is an optimal distance based in the weight of the final ball. I am not sure what application this can be used for if any but it is quite amazing for a 5:37 hand spin.

Combining two large neodymium magnets including spacer

I have decided to make a little series of videos about safe handling of neodymium magnet. There aren't many videos on Youtube on this subject. I'm not an expert on this subject but I do have practical experience and have learned a lesson or two the hard way. This video also forced my into trying something new in my videos: voiceover. Since my danish accent may be hard to understand (and I had a cold while recording the voice-over) I have put the captions here: - Hi Youtubers. In this video I'm gonna show you how to relatively safely put together to large neodymium magnets with a spacer inbetween without having magnets and shrapnel flying around. - So what do you need? Well I recommend that you use thick gloves. The thicker the better. Wearing gloves will not prevent your fingers from being crushed if they are caught between the magnets in an accident but they might make it easier to get your fingers unstucked again. - Next you will need a security board. This is just a wooden plate with some metal plates glued to the bottom half. - You will also need what I call a locking board. It's just a wooden board with a hole in it. The diameter of the hole should be the same as that of the magnets. And the height of the board should be the same as the magnet plus the spacer. - Next in line we have a large wedge. The width of the wedge should be the same as the diameter of the magnet or even larger. - Last but not least: Wear safety glasses. If the magnets accidently smash together <b>...</b>

2006 toy invention: neodymium magnet beads: amoebas etc.

Years before Buckyballs/Zen/Nanodots. I didn't have the ambition to start a company selling this toy. So I started posting videos, hoping someone would grab the idea. Yep, it worked. Took years though. My secret revenge: the toy is already out there, public domain, not patentable. If someone pretends to be the inventor, well, anyone else can choose their own company name and start selling 'em. See amasci.com Those in the vid bought online from various suppliers back to 1999. Small neo supermagnet spheres are COOL, especially if you have way more than fifty of 'em. See links to many suppliers at bottom of amasci.com I got these large 8mm nickel-plate spheres SP-1000 from Mr. George, Supermagnetman, $0.30 each, Chrome plate or gold are more expensive than nickel. www.supermagnetman.net . The power of a big Neodymium magnet

This is a video showing the power of a N45 2 inch cube neodymium magnet with a pull force of about 420lb. The demonstration with the dollar bill I saw on you tube done by robgallagher. The magnet is attracted to the dollar bill because of iron particles in the ink. In the clip where the magnet is holding up 149lb, the magnet is located between the white sheet of steel and the sheet of steel with the two orange weights on it. In the clip where I am crushing the tic tac container the 2in. cube neodymium magnet is in the case with a thin sheet of wood taped to one side of it, and the other magnet is a 1in. cube neodymium magnet wrapped in electrical tape. In the clip with the fake hand the 2in. cube neodymium magnet is in the plastic bag under the fake hand.

What Is Neodymium

Name Origin Greek: neos (new) didymos (twin). "Neodymium" in different languages. Sources Neodymium is never found in nature as the free element. It occurs in ores such as monazite sand and bastnasite. Primary producers are the USA, Brazil, India, Sri Lanka and Australia. Around 7300 tons are produced annually.Abundance Universe: 0.01 ppm (by weight) Sun: 0.003 ppm (by weight) Carbonaceous meteorite: 0.51 ppm Earth's Crust: 33 ppm Seawater: Atlantic surface: 1.8 x 10-6 ppm Atlantic deep: 3.2 x 10-6 ppm Pacific surface: 1.8 x 10-6 ppm Pacific deep: 4.8 x 10-6 ppm Uses Used in ceramics to colour glazes, and for special lens with praseodymium. Also to produce bright purple glass and special glass that filters infrared radiation. Neodymium is used in very powerful permanent magnets - Nd2Fe14B. These magnets are cheaper and also stronger than samarium-cobalt magnets. Neodymium magnets appear in products such as in-ear headphones and computer hard drives. History Neodymium was discovered by Baron Carl Auer von Welsbach, an Austrian chemist, in Vienna in 1885. He separated neodymium, as well as the element praseodymium, from a material known as didymium by means of fractional crystallization of the double ammonium nitrate tetrahydrates from nitric acid, while following the separation by spectroscopic analysis; however, it was not isolated in relatively pure form until 1925. The name neodymium is derived from the Greek words neos, new, and didymos, twin. Neodymium is frequently <b>...</b>

Levitation: Pyrolytic Graphite and Neodymium Magnets

Levitation: Pyrolytic Graphite and Neodymium Magnets. www.MadScienceTV.com Pyrolytic carbon is similar to regular graphite, but forms in stacked sheets rather than randomly orientated molecules. Because of the layering, pyrolytic carbon, commonly called pyrolytic graphite, exhibits a number of interesting properties, including the ability to levitate on a sufficiently strong magnetic field. Neodymium magnets are the most widely used rare earth magnets, and are made from an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron, in the ratio of Nd2Fe14B. Neodymium magnets are the strongest of any permanant magnets, and there are different grades, or levels of purity available. N30-N40 grade magnets are very strong but are considered "general purpose" as far as neodymium magnets go. Grades such as N50 and N52 are extremely strong, so strong that care must be taken when handling them, allowing them to snap together from only a few inches apart can cause them to shatter, and send shards flying off at high speed. When neodymium magnets are combined to form arrays, some very interesting effects can be created. 2006 toy: "Buckyball" fullerene from neodymium spheres

Years have passed, yet STILL nobody has made this Magnet Spehres Puzzle Toy idea into a product. Will I have to bite the bullet and do it myself? Sheesh. The problem is that you can't sell to kids, so it's an "Adult Toy." The big toy companies won't touch it: way too expensive what with many times markup. See amasci.com This latest video shows the trick to rapidly assembling a "buckyball" using sixty supermagnet beads. Note that this isn't a true Buckminster Fullerene, since magnets are dipoles while carbon atoms are quadrupoles. True "buckyballs" have hexagons and pentagons, while ours has squares and is slightly smaller. Try making sixty of these, then assemble them into a hyper-Fullerene! The real challenge: Don't build it from pentagons. Instead, start with two pentagons, then assemble two hemispheres. (This is how it happens in nature.) Then knit the two hemispheres seamlessly together, trapping a glass marble or other gigantic ionized metal atom within. It's harder than it looks! Another toy idea: actual carbon atoms have four poles, and their chains are zigzag. These magnets ...are more like sulfur polymer. (Does sulfur even form fullerenes?) The idea: magnetize some spheres with four tetrahedral poles, two N and two S. Or perhaps magnetize two poles but make them oblong and oriented perpendicular, like the ends of those coffee creamer Tetrapak thingies. That would let us construct 60-magnet spheres with hexagons instead of squares. We could build diamond crystals <b>...</b>

Separating large neodymium magnets

This is another video in my series of videos on how to handle large neodymium magnets safely. In this video I show you how to separate two large neodymium magnets without destroying yourself or the magnets. The tool is not my invention but I did make it myself out of scrap wood. Other examples of this tool you can find on robgallagher and kjmagnetics channels here on Youtube. The combining procedure is my own trick. Captions (push the CC button under the video to turn them on): Hello! In an earlier video I showed you how to safely put together two large neodymium magnets. In this video I'm going to take them apart again. For this job you need a splitter tool like the one shown here. This is not rocket science or fine craftsmanship - it just gets the job done. I call mine the BS Tool... which of course stands for big splitter tool... Here's how it works. Place the combined magnets in the cutout making sure that only one magnet sticks out - just like shown. Before I start chopping I prefer to put a sponge on the landing zone. This cushions the blow and makes it easier to remove the magnet again. Let's chop! Because of the spacer and the big size of the tool this doesn't take much effort at all considering the power of these magnets. At some point the magnetic fields of the two magnets will start colliding. The loose magnet will however solve this by itself as you can see. Now remove the upper magnet straight away from the lower magnet and place it far away. The lower magnet <b>...</b>

Neodymium Magnets and Electronics

MagnetNerd.com Several viewers have asked me about how electronics are affected by strong magnetic fields. The Neodymium Magnet is a 2 by 2 by 1 thick N42 block with a pull force of around 325 pounds and a surface field of around 5500 gauss. This is strong! The timepieces functions are normal and the phones still have my numbers in memory. So now we know.

Neodymium magnets life span?

neodymium magnets life span? A neodymium magnet (also known as NdFeB, NIB, or Neo magnet), a type of rare-earth magnet, is a permanent magnet made from an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron to form the Nd2Fe14B tetragonal crystalline structure. This material is currently the strongest type of permanent magnet. The tetragonal Nd2Fe14B crystal structure has exceptionally high uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy (HA~7 teslas). This gives the compound the potential to have high coercivity (ie, resistance to being demagnetized). The compound also has a high saturation magnetization (Js ~1.6 T or 16 kG). Therefore, as the maximum energy density is proportional to Js2 this magnetic phase has the potential for storing large amounts of magnetic energy (BHmax ~ 512 kJ/m3 or 64 MG·Oe), considerably more than samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets, which were the first type of rare earth magnet to be commercialized [1]. In practice, the magnetic properties of neodymium magnets depend on the alloy composition, microstructure, and manufacturing technique employed. en.wikipedia.org

How is a 6" neodymium magnet delivered?

Many people have wondered how a 6" neo-magnet is shipped. In this video I show you how. This is not an unpacking video since I unpacked the magnet a long time ago but I have kept most of the original packaging as an easy way of storing the magnet relatively safe. Captions in case you don't understand my english with a danish accent: Hello. Since I published the video with my monster 6" neodymium magnet a lot of people have been interested in how this magnet was delivered without sticking to everything. Since I kept the original packaging as a storage for the magnet I can now show you how. The magnet comes in a surprisingly small box but there is a little trick involved as you will soon see. The box had 4 plastic strips around it as seen on the marks where I point. Under an initial layer of styrofoam the little trick is revealed. The box has a thin sheet of iron in the top and bottom to shield - or rather redirect - the magnetic field from the magnet. The sheet is pulled strongly towards the magnet so I have to be careful not to get cut. Now I place the sheet far away from the magnet to avoid it flying against the magnet and through me with its sharp edges. The next layers are made of pieces of plywood which can't be compressed like the styrofoam. After digging through more layers of styrofoam and plywood we find the magnet wrapped in plastic and paper. When delivered it came in vacuum packed plastic and paper wrapping like shown here with a much smaller magnet. It takes a <b>...</b>
