NY Violence: 'Media happy to show protests but not in our backyards'

A wave of public discontent in the US shows no sign of abating, following Saturday's protest, where hundreds of peaceful demonstrators were arrested, sparking accusations of heavy-handed policing. Defiant anti-Wall street activists refuse to back down, saying more marches against corporate greed and social inequality are in the pipeline. Both the crackdown on Wall street and the way existing financial institutions are run, show that 'US democracy' is just an empty phrase - that's according to UK-based investigative journalist Tony Gosling. Wall Street protesters to RT: We can take down US fat cats!

As the Occupy Wall Street movement grows in America, campaigners are getting the idea that they are battling the wealthy minority of their own population that has adjusted the country's legislation to their own benefit, neglecting the sum of things. RT's Lori Harfenist found out on the streets of New York that the "Occupy Wall Street" protests have been inspired by "the failure of the system to respond to higher calling for our country." Protesters flood back to 'Occupy' NY park

Anti-Wall Street protesters flooded back into a New York park that had been their home for two months until police cleared the encampment, but they were barred from pitching new tents. The Occupy Wall Street movement was thrown into crisis during a turbulent 24 hours that began with a surprise early morning raid in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park to clear all tents in the privately-owned area. Protesters then spent the day playing cat-and-mouse with authorities as they sought to re-establish their base near Wall Street, the symbolic epicenter of a movement protesting alleged corporate greed which has inspired like-minded demonstrators in other US cities and abroad.

Keith Olbermann Reads The Statement Released By The Wall Street Protesters - 2011-10-05

Keith Olbermann Reads The Statement Released By The Wall Street Protesters - 2011-10-05 Transcript: nycga.cc The Official Declaration of the Occupation of Wall Street read by Keith Olbermann 10-05 2011 As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies. As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known. They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage. They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses. They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the ...

Police confront barrier-storming protesters

New York City police confronted a crowd of protesters on Broadway on Wednesday night, using batons and pepper spray to force them back from a row of metal barricades erected to protect Wall Street. Video from the scene shows an officer firing pepper spray into a crowd of demonstrators and journalists while another swings his baton multiple times. The breakaway group of 100 to 200 protesters had reached the barricade with the intent of breaking through to Wall Street. Earlier in the day, the growing Occupy Wall Street movement, whose range of grievances focuses on wealth inequality and corruption, staged a march of around 5000 people in and around Zuccotti Park, where the protesters have made their camp. Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports from New York.
