The name on the back panel, just under the massive adjustable rear wing, says Nissan LEAF™. The powertrain is an 100% zero emission advanced Lithium-ion battery design, just like that found on the world's first affordable mass market electric vehicle. And despite its lack of rear doors, rear seat, trunk, audio system, navigation, carpeting and other amenities, there is a discernable family resemblance. But that is where the similarities between the production Nissan LEAF and the Nissan LEAF NISMO RC end. As indicted by the "RC" -- for Racing Competition -- this new electric vehicle, which makes its world debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, is purpose-built to bring new meaning to the term "Racing Green."

Willow Springs International Raceway is known for its staggeringly high lap speeds, and it defines itself with one of the gnarliest, high-speed corner combinations anywhere in the world: a long decreasing-radius bend from Turn 8 to Turn 9. And so in an effort to preserve the world's population of auto scribes like us, Nissan has created a makeshift chicane to successfully emasculate these corners during our test of the 2009 Nissan Nismo 370Z. Smart move. Fortunately there are ample opportunities elsewhere on this track to explore the car's increased performance over the standard 2009 Nissan 370Z. Namely Turn 6, which apexes at a blind crest and is followed on the downhill side by a huge midcorner bump that makes the standard Z-car wallow like a Buick LeSabre over a Wyoming frost heave. It's here that the Nismo Z sells itself. In the Sport Z-car we're afraid. Afraid of physics. Afraid that the track will toss us — like a Buick — into the unforgiving desert. But after a few laps in the Nismo Z, we're confident. And we're faster. We keep our right foot planted all the way over the Turn 6 crest and across the bump, gaining enough speed that a few hundred yards down the track we ingloriously annihilate most of the orange cones that Nissan deployed to keep us alive. Nice.

Nissan Leaf NISMO RC electric racer on the track
Here's a video produced by Nissan showing the Leaf NISMO RC electric racer on the track. The video shows the EV race car conducting some testing at the Sodegaura Forest Raceway as Nissan officials explain their concepts for the car. Manaki Iwamoto of Nissan Motorsports International raises the interesting prospect of what electric racers can do that current race cars can't: indoor racing or races on city streets where noise and emissions would not be a problem. Iwamoto also explains how in converting the Leaf into a race car the team tried to keep as many design cues as possible from the production Nissan Leaf, but had to make some radical changes. The power train on the test model became a mid-mounted set-up, while the vehicle's body shape was made wider, lower and longer. The racer also makes extensive use of carbon-fiber to lower the curb weight of the vehicle. The Leaf NISMO RC features an 80 kW (107 bhp / 109 PS) electric motor (AC synchronous) with 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint takes just 6.85 seconds and top speed is 150 km/h (93 mph). High-res photos: www.worldcarfans.com

The Nissan LEAF NISMO RC (RACING COMPETITION) takes zero emission to a new level... the race track! Nissan chose to unveil their first zero emission race car at the 2011 New York Auto Show. Like the production Nissan LEAF, the NISMO RC is powered by a lithium-ion battery composed of 48 compact modules and a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. It can be charged up to 80 percent of its full capacity in 30 minutes using the quick charging port located inside the rear cowl. And unlike other competition vehicles, the NISMO RC has no tailpipe, no emission of CO2 or other greenhouse gases while being driven, and no exhaust sound. In preliminary testing the NISMO RC produces 0 to 62 mph acceleration in 6.85 seconds and a top speed of 93 miles per hour. It is projected to have a running time of around 20 minutes under racing conditions.
