Durante i primi vespri del triduo per la solennità dell'Esaltazione della Santa Croce, tramite questo ascensore a forma di nuvola (da cui il nome dialettale "Nivola"), SERma il Sig. Card. Arcivescovo accompagnato da altri Canonici ascende a 45 metri d'altezza per prelavare il Santo Chiodo conservato nella raggera posta sopra la volta del presbiterio. Una volta inserita la Reliquia nella croce lignea, la Nivola ridiscende accompagnata dal suono del campanone del duomo e dal canto delle litanie dei Santi. Il Santo Chiodo rimarrà esposto alla venerazione dei fedeli fino al giorno dell'Esaltazione della Santa Croce, quando sempre con la "Nivola" verrà riposizionato nel catino absidiale. Mossa da un congegno di funi e carrucole azionate da un duplice argano, la «nivola» fu ideata, secondo una diffusa tradizione, da Leonardo da Vinci. Ma anche se il geniale inventore toscano collaborò effettivamente al cantiere della Fabbrica del Duomo sul finire del XV secolo, sembra più probabile che questo singolare elevatore sia stato creato dai tecnici della Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, forse su progetto del Cerano, all'epoca di San Carlo, che ne dovette essere, quindi, il primo fruitore. La navicella ancor oggi in uso, comunque, risale all'episcopato del cardinale Federico Borromeo, essendo stata decorata nel 1612 da Giovan Battista Landriani, con angeli in volo tra nubi e squarci azzurri: sicuro suggerimento per il nome assegnatole dai milanesi, al quale non sono estranei anche la <b>...</b>

Costantino Nivola (1911 - 1988) Born in Orani, Sardinia, Costantino Nivola became a painter, designer, and sculptor in abstract expressionist style. He studied at the Istituto Superiore d'Arte in Monza, Italy with Marino Marini and Marcello Nizzoli, Art Director for Olivetti Company. In 1939, Nivola came to the United States, and from 1954 to 1957 was Director of the Design Workshop at Harvard University Graduate School. He also taught at Columbia University, Dartmouth College, the University of California Berkeley and the International University of Art in Florence, Italy.
