Normandy is a geographical region corresponding to the former Duchy of Normandy. It is situated along the English Channel coast of Northern France between Brittany (to the west) and Picardy (to the east) and comprises territory in northern France and the Channel Islands. The territory is divided between French and British sovereignty. The continental territory under French sovereignty covers 30627 km²[1] and forms the preponderant part of Normandy and roughly 5% of the territory of France. It is divided for administrative purposes into two régions: Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie. The Channel Islands (referred to as Îles Anglo-Normandes in French) covers 194 km²[2] and comprise 2 bailiwicks: Guernsey and Jersey, both under British rule. Upper Normandy (Haute-Normandie) consists of the French départements of Seine-Maritime and Eure, and Lower Normandy (Basse-Normandie) of the départements of Orne, Calvados, and Manche. The former province of Normandy comprised present-day Upper and Lower Normandy, as well as small areas now part of the départements of Eure-et-Loir, Mayenne, and Sarthe. The name of Normandy is derived from the settlement and conquest of the territory by Vikings ("Northmen") from the 9th century, and confirmed by treaty in the 10th century. For a century and a half following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Normandy and England were linked by Norman rulers, but following 1204 the continental territory was ultimately held by France. Darius Milhaud - Suite Française for Band (1/5) Normandy
Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) Folk-inspired compositions for band were well established in the works of British composers Holst and Vaughan Williams and Australian-American Percy Grainger at the time this suite came into being. It was the result of a 1944 request to Milhaud from Leeds Music for a school band composition. The suite is in five movements, each titled for the region from which the music came. Each had significance to Milhaud based on his memories of the struggles his country endured during the war. 1. Normandie - A bright "loure" dance tune in 6/8 time featuring two songs: "Germaine" and "The French Shepherdess and the King of England" The United States Marine Band conducted by Colonel Timothy W. Foley.

From the historic "Stillman Fires" film collection: The SS Normandie was once the pride of the French Merchant Marine and was the largest, most luxurious oceanliner afloat when she came into service in 1935. In September, 1939 the war in Europe had just begun and Nazi-German troops were invading France swiftly. The Normandie was safely in the neutral waters of New York Harbor when war broke out. The US Government allowed the ship to remain in the harbor... a refugee which most certainly would have been immediately used for Nazi naval military purposes if she were to return. Shortly after war was declared between Germany and the US on December 11th, 1941 the US War Department and US Navy seized the french liner at her berth and immediately began to convert her from passenger liner to high-capacity troop transport. She was renamed USS Lafayette and painted battleship grey with camoflage shadowing. Threats of Nazi sabotage loomed across the eastern seaboard, but work continued with vigilance. However on the afternoon of February 9th, 1942 those rumored threats seemed to have possibly become true when a mysterious fire broke out aboard the Normandie/Lafayette. The fire spread quickly through the upper decks, forcing shipyard workers to evacuate the ship. New York city fireboats pumped thousands of gallons of water from the Hudson River into the ship to help battle the blaze, but the extreme weight of the trapped water within her decks caused her to list dangerously to port <b>...</b>

Exhumation of 5 German soldiers in Bavant, Normandie
For more details about WWII research projects: researchww2.blogspot.com A team of archeologists exhumes 5 bodies of German soldiers in Bavant, Normandy. The team carefully exhumed the bodies following standart archeological procedure; which is rare for World War 2 bodies. Three identification tags were discovered, which should permit the identification of the soldiers. According to the way the bodies were lying in the ground (some on their backs, others on their stomachs) and the fact that all three identification tags were complet, the archeologists deter,ined that the bodies had been buried by allied troops. The 5 Germans were apparently killed during fighting with British and Canadian paratroopers duing the first hours of the Allied landing on June 6th 1944.
