Notre Dame Cathedral is an artistic and architectural masterpiece. Constructed over 182 years beginning in in 1163, it is the finest example of Gothic design in the world. The Cathedral stands on an island in the heart of Paris. The building was damaged during the French Revolution but restored after publication of the Victor Hugo novel, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in 1831. A must see while in Paris.

As famous for its reputed hunchback as it is for it's stunning architecture the Notre Dame Cathedral is incredible in its grandeur and its truly spectacular design. Construction began in the mid-12th century and it took almost 200 years to complete the 'initial' design. However work continued in the ensuing centuries with further elements added for both aesthetic and structural reasons - most notably the amazing flying buttresses added to stop the outer walls from collapsing as the building grew in size. Every part of Notre Dame is amazing and it's not until you witness it in person that you can truly grasp its vast dimensions and intricate detail.

Olivier Latry is one of three organists at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. He is one of the finest concert organists in the world today. On October 7, 2007 Mr. Latry invited JAV Recordings into the loft at Notre Dame and allowed us to film him playing the Introit to the 11:30 Sunday Mass. This music was spontaneously created by Mr. Latry in the tradition of the great French organists. This was recorded with a Cannon HV20 and a pair of microphone hung in the Nave of the Cathedral. On October 14, 2007 Mr. Latry recorded Vierne's 6th Symphony and a 3 movement symphony on hymn tunes at Washington National Cathedral. Pierre Cochereau, Notre Dame's organist for 29 years until his death in 1984, improvised this series of variations on the old hymn tune for the cathedral's Christmas Eve Mass in 1970. It was recorded at its single performance. Jeremy Filsell, Washington National Cathedral's Artist in Residence, transcribed it, & performs it here in a recording made in Liverpool in March 2000. Liverpool's Roman Catholic cathedral was initially planned as a monumental project -- intended to be the largest cathedral in the British Isles. Construction on the crypt started in 1933, but World War II and the ensuing financial devastation of Europe forced a drastic curtailment in plans. The down-scaled -- but still impressive -- building was completed in 1967, and the IV/88 JW Walker instrument was installed at that time. Cochereau was titulaire at Notre Dame from 1955 until his death, at the age of 59, in 1984. In the first 84 years of the 20th century, the organ bench at Notre Dame was occupied by only 3 organists: Vierne, Léonce de Saint Martin, & Cochereau.

Pierre Cochereau shows us his dazzling dexterity as he dashes (how's that for alliteration?) through this Gigout showpiece. And he gets to demonstrate his "avalanche of sound" near the end. The instrument has been well documented. It's based on an 1867 Cavaillé-Coll, but it has been in a near-constant state of updating/renovation/expansion ever since. It's currently a V/110/153, most recently worked on in 1992 by a whole bunch of folks. This recording dates (I think) from the early 1970's. Disques Solstice recorded almost everything Cochereau ever played -- including his world-famous improvisations -- but I don't think this piece ever made it to CD.
