The protesters are against the shipment and storage of nuclear waste. Scuffles broke out between anti-nuclear protesters and German police early on Saturday in the northern town of Metzingen. This is about 19 miles away from where a shipment of highly radioactive nuclear waste was expected to arrive at a storage depot later in the weekend. Police used water cannons on a smaller group of protesters which had distanced itself from a nearby camp of some 700 to 800 activists, many of whom shouted at police to go away. A heavily protected train carrying 150 tonnes of reprocessed nuclear waste was en route to the Gorleben storage site in Germany's Lower Saxony state. The train left Areva's nuclear fuel reprocessing facility in Normandy, France on Wednesday after scuffles there between police and hundreds of protesters who tried to foil the transport by occupying train tracks near the town of Valognes. The train was the last of 12 shipments of treated German nuclear waste sent in recent years from France to Gorleben.

Anti-nuclear activists clashed with police in Leitstade, Germany as they tried to get to the track in the path of the Castor train carrying nuclear waste. It is on a journey from a reprocessing plant in France to a storage facility at nearby Gorleben. Activists tried to block roads in the woods of Leitstade, clashing with riot police, sending flares and setting fire to an armoured personnel carrier. Police used water cannon to disperse the demonstrators. Activists maintain that neither the waste containers nor the Gorleben site, a temporary storage facility, are safe.

*GERMAN PEOPLE AWAKE* Nuclear Waste Train Stopped as Police Cry for their Mommies

STORY: 17000 police officers that marched into the woods around the nuclear storage facility in Gorleben in northern Germany on Sunday morning looked invincible. Police personnel from France, Croatia and Poland had joined in the biggest security operation ever mounted against protestors against the a train carrying nuclear waste to an depot in an isolated part of Lower Saxony's countryside. But by Sunday night, those same police officers were begging the protestors for a respite. Trapped in black, icy woods without supplies or reinforcements able to reach them because of blockades by a mobile fleet of farmer's tractors, the exhausted and hungry police officers requested negotiations with the protestors. The Castor train -- called a „Chernobyl on wheels" because it has been carrying 133 tonnes of highly radioactive waste to an unsafe depot -- was stopped in the middle of the countryside and Nato barbed wire was placed around it. Lit by floodlights and guarded by a handful of police, the most dangerous train on the planet was forced to a halt after a 63 hour journey across France and Germany. The failure of the biggest ever police operation two thousand years later in the woods of Lower Saxony to tame women, elderly people and school children protesting the government's nuclear policy, could well also go down as a turning point. The Berlin government can no longer rely on the discredited mainstream media to control the way people see issues. The German people as a whole are ...

for subs, click the cc-button down right This is a video by Greenpeace, Germany, featuring some japanese members of the rally against the Castor-transports to Gorleben, Germany. Gorleben was supposed to be the final deposition for nuclear waste in Germany but is heavily criticized for safety reasons. There are claims that radiation measurements on site are too high to admit any adding of nuclear waste to what has already summed up during the last decades of years. The people of the Wendland region have always fought an impressive fight against this issue and probably have attributed more to the anti-nuclear movement than anyone can pay back. Made in Germany | Nuclear Waste in Sweden - Yes Please!

For the past seven years, two Swedish towns have been competing for the right to host a high-level nuclear waste storage facility. Strange but true. While most would consider it highly undesirable to have such a plant right on their doorstep, the municipalities of Oskarshamn and Östhammar saw it as an opportunity to ensure that public coffers be full for years to come. Now the company responsible for the nuclear waste,SKB,has made a decision - one of the towns will get the radioactive waste, the other will go empty-handed. A report by Hagen Tober.

Protests against a train carrying nuclear waste from France to Germany held its rail journey up more than a day. A shipment of highly radioactive waste has finally reached its storage site in Germany, after its journey was dogged by anti-nuclear activists. It took 92 hours for the German waste to be returned from France, where it had been reprocessed. It reached its final destination only after police spent much of Monday night clearing about 3000 protesters who were blockading the route.
