Tchaikovsky / Robert Irving, NYC Ballet Orchestra, 1959: Nutcracker, Suites 1 & 2, Complete

In this 1959 recording, the late English conductor Robert Irving (1913-1991) leads the New York City Ballet Orchestra in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, Suites 1 and 2. Icreated this video from the LP that is shown above, issued on the Kapp label in 1960, serial number 9048. Maestro Irving was music director for the NYC Ballet from 1959 through 1989. I'd like to thank Earl Carlyss, former concertmaster of the NYC Ballet Orchestra and violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet (1966-1986), for making his personal copy of this extremely rare and extraordinary LP available to me to produce this video. To preserve the depth of sound that was available to recording engineers at the time this LP was pressed some 50 years ago, I did not use any software to adjust the audio quality to remove small noises and distortion. So that no questions arise in the listeners' mind as to the provenance of this and similarly rare and historical recordings, I rely for images on the LP label (3:43, 30:57) and jacket, front (15:20) and reverse. Get more from The Girls' Guide at Teen.com Two young dancers' dreams come true when they meet Tiler Peck, the principal dancer in NYC Ballet's prestigious Nutcracker! About Tiler Peck: 21, Ballerina, Principal Dancer, Full Time Sugar Plum Fairy We asked Tiler: How do you push through not feeling well or a bad day when you have to be onstage? "Whenever I am exhausted, feeling down, or questioning whether or not I am going to be able to make it through a performance I always remind myself of the reason why I dance. I dance because I simply love it. That is a very special thing because many individuals are not able to have a profession that is also their hobby and love of life; therefore, I feel very lucky. Dancing is also unique because it allows you to temporarily forget reality. Dancing takes you to another level, a different dreamlike world." - Tiler The New York City Ballet performs The Nutcracker Nov. 29th through January 2, 2011 at the David H. Koch Theater. Nutcracker Swing - Part 1 (Intro with Leonard Slatkin)

This is a Live From Lincoln Center special called "Nutcracker Swing" featuring both the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Slatkin, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis that originally aired on PBS in December, 2001. I recorded the original live broadcast on VHS tape, and for years it's been a tradition of mine to watch this special around Christmas time. As far as I know this special never aired again, nor has it ever been made available to purchase anywhere. There's entirely too much great stuff in here to keep locked up in a dusty old VHS tape, so I present it here for you to enjoy in it's (near) entirety. The way it works is that the NY Philharmonic plays a section from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker followed by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra playing the Ellington/Strayhorn arrangement of the same section. The special starts with four sections from Wyton Marsalis' "All Rise," introduced here by Leonard Slatkin.
