Nyiragongo Crater, Journey to the Center of the World

In June 2010, a team of scientists and intrepid explorers stepped onto the shore of the lava lake boiling in the depths of Nyiragongo Crater, in the heart of the Great Lakes region of Africa. The team had dreamed of this: walking on the shores of the world's largest lava lake. Members of the team had been dazzled since childhood by the images of the 1960 documentary "The Devil's Blast" by Haroun Tazieff, who was the first to reveal to the public the glowing red breakers crashing at the bottom of Nyiragongo crater. Photographer Olivier Grunewald was within a meter of the lake itself, giving us a unique glimpse of it's molten matter. Music: Center of the Sun - Conjure One

Nyiragongo Volcano in Democratic Republic of the Congo

Mount Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Great Rift Valley. It is located inside Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. The main crater is about two km wide and usually contains a lava lake. The crater presently has two distinct cooled lava benches within the crater walls - one at about 3175m (10400 ft) and a lower one at about 2975 m (9800 ft). Nyiragongo's lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history. The depth of the lava lake varies considerably. A maximum elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 3250 m (10700 ft) prior to the January 1977 eruption - a lake depth of about 600 m (2000 ft). A recent very low elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 2700 m (8800 ft). Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40% of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions. erta ale krafft katia and maurice tazief

Nyiragongo Volcano and the Volcanic Observatory of Goma, Congo

On January 17th, 2002, Nyiragongo volcano erupted. Lava flows ran across the town of Goma (600000 inhabitants), and ended up in Lake Kivu. At that time, the town of Goma was in the hands of Congolese rebels, supported by the Rwandan regular army, so the central government of DRC did not take any security measures for survivors and homeless people. The population had the time to run away from the town, so only some hundred people died, but thousands of houses were destroyed and the rest was pillaged by the Rwandan army. Three years after the eruption, the inhabitants of Goma are reconstructing their houses on the solidified lava flows, on the exact spots their homes had been destroyed. If a new eruption took place, those new houses would be swept away and burnt again. The international community finances a Volcanic Observatory in Goma, where some Congolese scientists, under the supervision of famous Belgian volcanologist Jacques Durieux, try to forecast the next eruption and, with the help of the local authorities, hope to be able to evacuate the town as quickly as possible to reduce the number of victims.

Scientist gets too close to boiling lava from volcano

A scientist tries to get a lava sample from Mount Nyiragongo in Africa's Great Rift Valley, but gets too close to the boiling lake. Dr Dario Tedesco, from the University of Naples, one of the world's leading authorities on the volcano, tries to alert the scientist whose life is at risk. Mount Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Scientists want to take lava samples from volcanoes because it can give vital clues about what is happening deep inside the planet.
