The consensus after day 1 was that if a new south swell did arrive as some forecasts predicted, then the pro finals could be borderline epic for an east coast event, and those forecasts were correct. Quarter Finals were run at a lower tide than the previous day, making for difficult conditions for many of the initial heats, which led to some early upsets. Local favorites Michael Brickle and Perry Wells, who looked like shoe-ins on the days prior, struggled with the poor waves and were nudged out in their Quater Final heats, leaving Woody Harris as the only North Carolinian left in the contest. Brad Domke, who's hand had been injured during his heat on Saturday, powered through the pain and into the Semi Finals, while fellow Floridian John Akerman flexed his technical abilities and smooth style to propel himself into the Semis where he would take an unfortunate 4th in an intense battle against Bryan, Domke and Harris, respectively. This battle was the second heat of the Semis and the first to see the bigger waves brought on by the incoming swell/tide combo which provided more variety for the competitors and better entertainment for the crowd. Hurricane Irene has come and gone. And she left quite a path of destruction in her wake. There was a lot of hype leading up to Ms. Irene's arrival. A potential Category 3 or 4 storm eventually landed on the OBX as a Cat 1. We were all very happy to see Irene's intensity diminish as she drew close to shore, but the realism of a major storm was always in the back of our minds. Unfortunately, even that realism did not prepare us for the destruction that was about to arrive. Last Friday (Irene arrived late that night), I took a trip to Jennette's Pier in Nags Head to get a pre-Irene beach report. It was a nice day, but the conditions were worsening, and it was clear some funky weather was on the way. So, I asked a professional OBX photographer to tag along to capture some of Outer Banks: Hurricane Irene, "Before." Luckily, Whitney of Whitney Norko Photography agreed to come, and we got some amazing before pictures. Storm Hunter Jim Edds tangles with the deadly storm surge of Hurricane Isabel. Besides getting knocked down and pounded throughout the day by powerful waves, he almost bit the dust on one wave while shooting the downstairs of a house ripped to shreds by the surge. This is as video of a new turbo setup in my 1990 Mazda Miata. It's an OBX GT28R ball bearing turbo with a T25 flange. It's mounted to a flyin miata diy manifold & 2.5" downpipe. I have 2.5" aluminum charge pipe, Yonaka frount mount intercooler, AEM EMS ecu, full MAF delete with AEM 2 bar MAP sensor, GM IAT, and a GM Boost control solenoid. This turbo lasted about 5 minutes on the street, and then became unbalanced. Recommend you do not buy.

We got the OK to enter the property we rented in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. It was evident on the ride in the devastation Hurricane Irene has caused for some families. Because where we are more north on the Outer Banks, the damage wasn't so bad. We are gonna try to drive south today or tomorrow to see where the most damage occurred and see if they need any help for a day. They are allowing residents back into Duck as of today. In May of 2000 my nephew Cody and I went herping in the Nags Head, NC area while on a family excursion to the Outer Banks. In this video Cody operates the video camera (for the first time) while we film a Cottonmouth and then gets to hold his first wild snake--an Eastern Hognose and my young niece Ashlyn shows that she is not afraid of snakes. These are some of the most memorable and wonderful moments from my life but they are also grand teachable moments that anyone can enjoy and learn from. Corrections: in the video I incorrectly refer to the Cottonmouth as a "poisonous" snake--the correct term is venomous. Poison Ivy is poisonous--Cottonmouths are venomous. Here's the Outer Banks Hurricane Irene Update as of 5:30 PM on Friday, August 26, 2011. This video was shot at Jennette's Pier in Nags Head at 3:00 PM. Ms. Irene is on the way! Some Irene conditions are starting to show up; clouds, wind, and waves are starting to arrive. The good news for the day is that Irene's eye wall has broken down. The hurricane has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm, and with less than 24 hours before it makes landfall, it is unlikely that it will have time to intensify. It seems that Hurricane Irene will land on the Outer Banks as a Category 2, and as it bounces up the East Coast, it should downgrade to a Category 1 pretty quickly. There is still strong potential for significant impact on the OBX, but this is much better than yesterday's predictions of Category 3 or 4. There is a mandatory evacuation for the entire Outer Banks. Dare and Currituck counties are requiring that guests and residents evacuate. As a result, it is pretty quite on the OBX. Our family has decided to stick around to hold the fort down, so over the next few days, I'll do my best to give updates as I can...while being safe of course. After the quick report, I traveled up the "Beach Road" to capture some "before" shots. I had a professional photographer with me, so I'll get a great slide show of "before" images out to you ASAP.
