Occupy Wall Street

"I think they're really touching a nerve," Sen. Bernie Sanders said Tuesday of protests on Wall Street that have inspired demonstrations from Burlington, Vt., to Los Angeles. "The nerve is that the average American understands that as a result of the greed and the recklessness and the illegal behavior on Wall Street, these guys plunged us into the horrendous recession that we're in right now." Even Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke allowed that there was "excessive risk taking" by Wall Street when Sanders questioned him on Tuesday about the root causes of the recession and the concerns voiced by protesters. "They blame, with some justification, the financial sector with getting us into this mess," Bernanke told another member of the Joint Economic Committee. "I can't blame them," he added.

Occupy Facebook: Protesters Planning Their Own Social Network

Watch out Facebook, the Occupy protest is making its own social network. The Global Square is expected to launch in January 2012, providing a secure space for Occupy protestors to organize, share, and meet fellow protestors, according to its developers. It will also boast a Facebook-like news feed. Unlike Twitter and Facebook however, new Global Square members must be sanctioned by existing ones before being accepted. This news comes just days after Twitter reports it was subpoenaed by the Massachusetts DA's office for Occupy Boston account information. Developers hope to get the site up and running as soon as January, giving protesters somewhere to occupy during wintertime: their computers.

What We Saw at the Occupy Wall Street Protest

Down with banks, student-loan debt, and expensive elections! Up with barter...capitalism...and...Mitt Romney?!?! On October 4, 2011, Reason.tv visited the Occupy Wall Street protests at Liberty Square in Lower Manhattan, on Day 18 of the ongoing demonstration. The crowd was relatively small at about 300, and included educated but unemployed workers, college students and recent graduates, homeless drifters, performance artists, 9/11 truthers, and a not-insignificant number of journalists. The "leaderless" movement is made up of more than a dozen smaller groups, such as the "Information" group with Macbooks hooked up to generators who maintain the "OccupyWallStreet" Twitter feeds and liveblogs, a "People's Library" consisting mostly of donated leftist literature, and a well-stocked kitchen where organic vegetables are sliced for communal salads. Student loan debt, campaign finance reform, and general anger with the sluggish economy were the more frequent grievances aired, but the demonstrators are hardly monolithic in their passions or opinions. Among the boilerplate anti-capitalist rhetoric included a lifelong Democrat professing his support for Mitt Romney, an unemployed aviation mechanic declaring his continued support of capitalism and disgust at corporate welfare, and a homeless man expressing skepticism that any of the protestors would remain in the park if just "one bad wind" rolled through the area. Also in the crowd was Republican New York City Councilman Daniel J ...

Thanks for an excellent piece Lawrence O'donnel Follow the live stream of the occupy wall street protests here: www.livestream.com This may seem insignificant to some, but this is where REAL reform starts. These protests are filled with individual who have a quarrel with how corrupt our government and federal bank have become. Many have their own message, many just know they are not happy and want to create a better society for themselves and their fellow Americans. The corruption of the FED is avoided by the main stream media, make your own assumptions as to why, but one of the goals of these protestors is to bring light to some of these facts. The FED has handed out over $16 Trillion to private banks and corporations in the past 4 years and NONE of this was addressed in the mainstream news nor was it approved of by the people. Peter Schiff Speaks for 1 Percent at Occupy Wall Street

Last week, Reason.tv followed investment guru, radio show host, and unflappable defender of capitalism Peter Schiff as he spent three hours among the Occupy Wall Street protesters in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park. An unapologetic member of "the 1 Percent," Schiff argued with all comers for the better part of an afternoon. Schiff is no ordinary observer. As the prinicipal of the financial firm Euro Pacific Capital, he's a full-fledged and unapologetic member of "the 1 Percent." As an outspoken radio show host and commentator, he not only predicted the housing crash and financial crisis, he railed bank and auto-sector bailouts as they were happening. Schiff believes that capitalism offers is the only hope for young, frustrated people to have a vibrant and prosperous future. So he went to Occupy Wall Street to engage and debate the protesters. Touring the Occupy Wall Street scene in New York with a sign that read "I Am the 1%, Let's Talk," Schiff spent more than three hours on the scene, explaining the difference between cronyism and capitalism, bailouts and balance sheets, and more. "The regulation we want is the market," said Schiff. "That's what works." Schiff describes himself as "sympathetic" to the plight of the OWS protesters, but thinks their anger is misdirected at legitimate business interests and should be better at the White House, Congress, the Federal Reserve, and the crony capitalists they've bailed out. Occupy Wall Street protesters shut down "Mockupation" set for "Law and Order SVU"

While cast and crew were waiting for their early wake up calls, about 100 Occupy Wall Street friends came to check out the "mockupation", going on in Foley Square. What twisted reality plot lines, will Dick Wolf's sweat shop writers, squeeze out, in the guise of entertainment. A few weeks after the illegal eviction, just blocks away, at Liberty Square, the "mockupy" at Foley Square was seen as disrespectful to all people that showed up. The kitchen was set up nicely though, oh craft services!! I think we were having a gluten free meal, this early morning. It wasn't clear if the art department, purposely misspelled signs, or they're just working too hard. One sign spelled "country", contry. Luckily, the NYPD's, acting lessons did not go unnoticed. The lighter, less riot gear, with still questionable civil rights issues, tied to the "mock" eviction that went on here, with the real threat of real arrest, brought back some memories, for some. They were talking about getting a group rate on head shots, to get in to the reshoots.

There's a heavy police presence on patrol in New York - as the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement against bank greed enters its fourth week, and gets a deeper foothold across the US The sentiment has already spread to the country's other major cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington.
