American Spring: The Documentary

Even the cold early spring of 2012 could not deter Occupy Wall Street (OWS) activists in New York city. People from different backgrounds continue to come out onto the streets. The agenda driving all the protesters remains the same: income inequality, corruption among banks and multinational corporations, foreclosures, climate change, police brutality and above all, the need to get together and talk in person -- not just via mobile phones. It is all about the courage of ordinary men and women to tell the truth to those who hold power. What We Saw at Occupy Wall Street's May Day Protest in NYC

Occupy Wall Street held a "General Strike" to commemorate May Day in New York City. Led by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, the "Guitarmy" of a few thousand people noisily marched 28 blocks down Fifth Avenue toward Union Square Park. Reason.tv was on the scene to speak with Morello, USMC Sgt. Shamar Thomas (who became a viral video sensation after screaming at NYPD officers during an OWS protest last year), rival zombie marchers, and a few self-described lefties who've just had it with President Obama. Runs about 5 minutes. Produced by Anthony L. Fisher, with camera by Nathan Chaffetz, Sean McElwee and Fisher. Journalist and Reason contributor Michael Tracey is covering New York's Occupy Wall Street as it's happening. Is Occupy Wall Street dead?

On Saturday the Occupy Wall Street movement will hit its six month mark. Since September of last year, the movement spread from New York to the rest of the world in a matter of days. Peter Schiff Speaks for 1 Percent at Occupy Wall Street

Last week, Reason.tv followed investment guru, radio show host, and unflappable defender of capitalism Peter Schiff as he spent three hours among the Occupy Wall Street protesters in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park. An unapologetic member of "the 1 Percent," Schiff argued with all comers for the better part of an afternoon. Schiff is no ordinary observer. As the prinicipal of the financial firm Euro Pacific Capital, he's a full-fledged and unapologetic member of "the 1 Percent." As an outspoken radio show host and commentator, he not only predicted the housing crash and financial crisis, he railed bank and auto-sector bailouts as they were happening. Schiff believes that capitalism offers is the only hope for young, frustrated people to have a vibrant and prosperous future. So he went to Occupy Wall Street to engage and debate the protesters. Touring the Occupy Wall Street scene in New York with a sign that read "I Am the 1%, Let's Talk," Schiff spent more than three hours on the scene, explaining the difference between cronyism and capitalism, bailouts and balance sheets, and more. "The regulation we want is the market," said Schiff. "That's what works." Schiff describes himself as "sympathetic" to the plight of the OWS protesters, but thinks their anger is misdirected at legitimate business interests and should be better at the White House, Congress, the Federal Reserve, and the crony capitalists they've bailed out. What We Saw at the Occupy Wall Street Protest

Down with banks, student-loan debt, and expensive elections! Up with barter...capitalism...and...Mitt Romney?!?! On October 4, 2011, Reason.tv visited the Occupy Wall Street protests at Liberty Square in Lower Manhattan, on Day 18 of the ongoing demonstration. The crowd was relatively small at about 300, and included educated but unemployed workers, college students and recent graduates, homeless drifters, performance artists, 9/11 truthers, and a not-insignificant number of journalists. The "leaderless" movement is made up of more than a dozen smaller groups, such as the "Information" group with Macbooks hooked up to generators who maintain the "OccupyWallStreet" Twitter feeds and liveblogs, a "People's Library" consisting mostly of donated leftist literature, and a well-stocked kitchen where organic vegetables are sliced for communal salads. Student loan debt, campaign finance reform, and general anger with the sluggish economy were the more frequent grievances aired, but the demonstrators are hardly monolithic in their passions or opinions. Among the boilerplate anti-capitalist rhetoric included a lifelong Democrat professing his support for Mitt Romney, an unemployed aviation mechanic declaring his continued support of capitalism and disgust at corporate welfare, and a homeless man expressing skepticism that any of the protestors would remain in the park if just "one bad wind" rolled through the area. Also in the crowd was Republican New York City Councilman Daniel J ...

Occupy the SEC: Former Wall Street Workers Defend Volcker Rule Against Banks' Anti-Regulatory Push

democracynow.org - The latest off-shoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement — Occupy the SEC — has submitted a 325-page comment to the Securities and Exchange Commission that calls on regulators to resist the financial industry's lobbying efforts to water down the Volcker Rule, a section in the Dodd--Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, that aims to prevent large banks from making certain kinds of risky, speculative investments. The group is made up of former Wall Street professionals who once worked at many of the largest financial firms in the industry. We're joined by Alexis Goldstein, who worked as a computer programmer for seven years at Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank. She left Wall Street in 2010 and joined the Occupy Wall Street soon after the encampment began. "Banks should not behave like a hedge fund," Goldstein says. "Hedge funds are there to make money and take risky bets and their clients tend to be these really wealthy clients. And the Volcker Rule says: well wait a minute, these big banks that enjoy this government support shouldn't be in that business."
