As a young man, Arend rescued the Oetker corporation from certain ruin, becoming known as one of Germany's smartest businessmen. Nowadays, he's involved in a different kind of enterprise. The 69-year-old travels around Germany gathering donations on behalf of artists and universities. Arend has always harboured a passion for art and philosophy. After university, he wanted to go abroad for a few years to gain experience and add to his art collection. But it wasn't to be. His mother's business was failing and Arend had to step in and rescue it. By 1967, he'd managed to make it one of the most successful family business in German history. Now that the company no longer requires his personal attention, Arend is free to follow his passions. Manuel Özcerkes accompied him on his quest to drum up donations for Leipzig University.

Arend Oetker wurde am 30. März 1939 in Bielefeld geboren. Er ist ein Urenkel August Oetkers, dem Gründer der Oetker-Gruppe. Seine Mutter erbte eher kleine Firmen, darunter die Marmeladen-Fabrik Schwartauer Werke, während ihr Bruder das eigentliche Kerngeschäft der Oetker-Gruppe alleine weiter führte. Oetker studierte Betriebswirtschaft sowie Politische Wissenschaften und promovierte 1967. Danach beschloss er, die mittlerweile kriselnden Firmen aus dem mütterlichen Erbe zu sanieren -- mit Erfolg. Die 1899 gegründeten Schwartauer Werke machte er in den 1970er Jahren zum Marktführer für Marmeladen in Deutschland und erweiterte das Sortiment um Früchte- und Schokoriegel. Heute ist die Arend Oetker Holding einer der größten Nahrungsmittelhersteller Europas -- mit einem heute auf 1,6 Milliarden Euro geschätzten Umsatz pro Jahr. Oetker ist auch in der Öffentlichkeit stets präsent: Er ist Vizepräsident des Bundesverbandes der Deutschen Industrie und engagiert sich in zahlreichen Stiftungen, die Kunst und Wissenschaft fördern. Der begeisterte Kunstförderer ist verheiratet, hat fünf Kinder und lebt in Berlin.
