Hakeem Olajuwon was born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1963. When he was 18 he moved to the United States to play basketball for Guy Lewis at the University of Houston. He led the Cougars to 3 Final Four appearances. He suffered 2 heartbreaking losses in the 1983 and 84 NCAA Championship games. One to North Carolina State coached by Jim Valvano. The other to John Thompson, Patrick Ewing and the Georgetown Hoyas. After weighing his options Hakeem would leave school after his junior year and enter the 1984 NBA Draft. Surprisingly enough he was drafted by the Houston Rockets, number one overall. Hakeem, together with fellow 7 footer Ralph Sampson would go on to be known as the "Twin Towers." In only his second season Hakeem would take his Rockets all the way to the 1986 NBA Finals. Although the Rockets would go on to lose to Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics the future still looked very bright in Houston. Sampson was traded in 1988 leaving Hakeem as the undisputed leader of the franchise. Carrying a heavy load on most night's due to a poor and constantly changing supporting cast Hakeem would still show the world just how talented he was. He led the league in rebounding twice (1989, 1990) averaging 13.5 and 14. He led the league in blocked shots 3 times ( 1990, 1991, and 1993). In the 93-94 season Hakeem became the only player in the history of the NBA to be named Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and Finals MVP in the same season. Ricky Pierce got 25 points, his season high, and started very inspirated with 12 points in the 1st quarter. The other Nuggets veteran Dale Ellis scored 20 points, 15 in the 2nd quarter. The Dream Career leader in blocks: 3830 NBA Champion: 2x (94, 95) Won MVP, Finals MVP, and DPOY in 94 Olajuwon was selected first in the 84 draft by the Houston Rockets. Hakeem teamed with Ralph Sampson to form their own "Twin Towers" front court. Together they made it to the NBA finals in 1986, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1. Unfortunately, they lost to the Boston Celtics in 6. However, Hakeem wasn't done yet. With Sampson retiring due to injuries, Hakeem became the leader of the team and lead them to the NBA finals in 94 and 95. Hakeem defeated his collegiate rival Patrick Ewing and his Knicks in 7 games, with Hakeem making the game saving block on John Starks in game 6. The 95 Rockets struggled in the regular season prompting a trade for Hakeem's old college teammate Clyde Drexler. Still, the Rockets limped into the playoffs as the #6 seed but defeated the Suns, Jazz, Spurs, and Magic, 4 50+ win teams, capturing back to back titles.

Olajuwon combined with the 7 ft 4 in (2.24 m) Ralph Sampson, to form what was dubbed the "Twin Towers" duo. The two led the Rockets to the 1986 NBA Finals, where they lost in six games to the Boston Celtics. After Sampson was traded to the Golden State Warriors in 1988, Olajuwon became the undisputed leader of the team. He led the league in rebounding twice (1989, 1990) and shot--blocking three times (1990, 1991, 1993). In the 1993-94 season he became the only player in NBA history to win the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP), Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP awards in the same season. In 1996, Olajuwon assisted in the gold medal-winning performance of the United States national team and was selected as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He ended his career the league's all-time leader in blocked shots. Listed at 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m), Olajuwon is generally considered one of the five greatest centers to ever play the game.
