Hungary's Orban fails to convince EP

STRASBOURG - Martin Schulz has only been in power for less than 24 hours and the new president of the European parliament is already facing a major challenge. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban invited himself to the plenary session in Strasbourg to defend what the Commission sees as an anti-democratic Constitution. Schulz' priorities for his term and the Danish Presidency were supposed to be the main topics on the parliament's agenda. Instead, the social democrat found himself chairing a heated debate on the state of democracy in Hungary. Hungary's Prime Minister attempted to deflect the criticism with legal and technical arguments, but failed to convince MEPs that he was respecting fundamental democratic values. Orban's political party, Fidesz, came to power in 2010. The country has been surrounded by controversy since then, especially during the first half of last year, when it held the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Viktor Orban tells the truth

It is a comment to the international attacks from the politically left and liberal minded people. Vikor Orbán said, that Hungarian media was led by the opposition, is led by the opposition and will be led by the opposition until Hungarian people will live in Hungary. He also declared that there is no law which can control the freedom of opinion in Hungary. Furthermore he said, that it would be fundamentally impossible to know the Hungarian people´s mindset and desire for freedom. Hungary has been a democratic state in past and it will be FOREVER as long as other nations don't rule over us as it happened in our history many times!

Orban in Brussels to build bridges

www.euronews.net Prime minister Viktor Orban has meet the EU's top brass in an effort to reach a deal over Hungary's disputed constitution. His visit to Brussels on Tuesday followed last week's decision by the European Commission to launch legal action against Budapest. Speaking at the European Parliament Orban denied the new laws were undemocratic, but promised reforms. "What is going on Hungary is consolidation politics! what we try to do is unify the people behind a social and economic program and not to split the society," Orban said.

- Jest nas dostatecznie wielu i mamy niezbędną determinację, by zdobyć prawo do wolności (...) Daniel Cohn-Bendit to Viktor Orban - This is damaging the image of Europe

Watch Hungarian subtitles www.youtube.com French original www.youtube.com In his speech, Daniel Cohn-Bendit spoke about the schizophrenia of Mr Orban's government which speaks two different languages : one pro-European language in Brussels and another one - nationalist - at home. While recognising the work done at EU level by the Hungarian administration, Daniel Cohn-Bendit stressed the fact that the Hungarian government destroyed back home everything they have built up in Brussels. He also referred to several examples like the decision of the Hungarian Media Council to oppose the merger of two newspapers in contradiction with the opinion of the EU Commission. Daniel Cohn-Bendit also deplored that Mr Orban remained voiceless as President in office on such crucial issues such as the decision of Denmark to reintroduce border controls or the revolutions for freedom in the Arab world. The joint motion for resolution by S&D, Greens/EFA, ALDE and GUE that was adopted by the European Parliament was based on the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) opinion and gives a strong signal to the Hungarian and all EU governments that they should and will be held accountable when acting beyond the democracy and rule of law standards and fundamental values commonly shared in Europe.

Ungarn - Umbau total - Orbán-Regierung - Weltjournal 16.11.2011
