This wonderful Hanka Ordonowna's song, one of her last great hits - God knows why, never revitalised in any form after 1945 - comes now from my old shellack. But only thanks to technical efforts of Jurek's - our YT friend, who is the owner of the most wonderful collection of pre-ww II Polish songs - this "Szarlatanka" (meaning "A Charlatan") comes back to us. This song was based upon old Russian tune, saying about woman who, being a honky-tonk, plays a pseudo-artistic game with the customers. The text, written by Oldlen - who was Julian Tuwim, one of the finest Polish XX century poets - is not easy. Yet, Orrdonowna goes thru the nuances more than well.

I don't know when exactly this side was recorded. This song, though having quite catchy music and nice simple words - never became a hit. So now it belongs to the conoisseur's club of the real rarities (especially, that the music and lyrics were written PERSONALLY by an authentic pre- - war Polish Prinz - Sapieha!). The song says about the parting, which Ordonowna is guessing from her lover's eyes. "The fire in your eyes is getting off - she sings - so I know at once that today I see you for the last time". From the style of Ordonówna's singing and the kind of her accompaniament I gues this Syrena-Electro recording must have been made around 1934.

Pjotr Leschenko had Varsovie (!) on his way when was traveling from Riga to Bucuresti, loved to make stops in the capital of Poland and was enriching his vast repertoire. Fell in love with a hit of Ordonka, wrote his own lyrics and was perfoming the song with a true feeling. However, the message was changed: not "Love will forgive you everything" (as it is in the original) but - "For love - I will forgive everything". Less disinterested declaration ?...:-) My Columbia is in a poor state, I know and I regret.

I'm uploading it here for it's just beautiful. Along the notes of this old Viennese walz, Ordonowna tells the funny & melancholic story about the fashions and the dances who come and go. It's one of most charming and heartbreaking songs of Ordonówna, the Queen Of Polish Songs. Composed by her piano accompaniator Borunski, plus text written by her friend, poet Marian Hemar, makes a canto about the lands thru'which you wander, and those you just pass by, always to come back home, which you always keep in your heart. Photos are of the Pomeranian city Bydgoszcz (called "Bromberg" by the German inhabitants, having been the high percentage of the citizens until 1939) show the town as it looked before the Nazi invasion in September 1939. It is my home city - this "little place in the heart" Ordonowna is singing about.

Information for the younger visitors in my site: Hanka Ordonówna was a brightest star among Polish singers and cabaret actors in Warsaw before the 2nd World War (September 1939). Her popularity and her class can be compared with that of Lucienne Boyer in France of the 1930s. If Ordonówna was "Polish Lucienne Boyer", so Eugeniusz Bodo - a film and cabaret actor and singer - must be compared to Maurice Chevalier. Yet, while Boyer and Chevalier after 1945 could peacefully contuinue their artistic development and wondertful careers throughout Europe and the world - these two Polish artists shared sad fate of the whole Polish nation, whioch after the War was ended, was betrayed by Western allies and left to die in hands of Josef Stalin. Eugenisz Bodo died of hunger in Kotlas - Soviet concentration camp in far North of Russia. Hanka Ordonówna, who also got into Soviet hands, managed,, hovever, to get out from Russia after 1945 - only to die a few years later in Beyrouth (Liban) from lung tuberculosis she got during her stay in Russia.

Autumn with her cold and misty days arrived in my country so early (still in Summer, Sept.14...) this year and this fact made me reach for a tango with autumn air -- "Autumn song", the title. Tango composed and written by Jakub Kagan and Michał Tyszkiewicz and recorded by Hanka Ordonówna in 1934. A count, Michał Tyszkiewicz, husband (young and handsome...)of the star turned out to be brilliant lyricist and had written for his great wife many a text which became later her great hits.

W.Dan, Polish Text: H.Ordonówna, Spanish Text: L.Friedmanówna), Odeon 1929 (Polish product) NOTE: It's one of the loveliest tangos sung by Hanka Ordonówna - who was Polish Number One of interwar song & cabaret. She is accompanied by Chór Dana (The Dan's Choir) - also,the finest Polish male vocal group of 1920/30s, that had its stage debut in this revue. To make their performance more attractive, they disguised and presented themselves as "original Argentinian male choir" Coro Argentino Dana. The trick worked very well and - after standing ovation, which was the audience's reward for their interpretation of several original Argentinian tangos (eg Bianco's "Plegaria") as well as very good Polish imitations composed by their leader, Władysław Dan with Spanish texts by a literature translator L. Friedmanówna (eg "Liana") - they started their long-lasting and fabulous career, abruptly ended by the outbreak of 2nd World War. Hanka Ordonówna, Ordonka, właściwie Maria Anna Tyszkiewicz, z domu Pietruszyńska, pseud. literacki Weronika Hort (ur. 25 września 1902 w Warszawie, zm. 8 września 1950 w Bejrucie), polska piosenkarka, autorka wierszy oraz tekstów piosenek, tancerka i aktorka. Po ukończeniu sześciu lat uczęszczała do szkoły baletowej przy Teatrze Wielkim w Warszawie, w którym zadebiutowała w 1917r. Później związała się z warszawskim kabaretem Sfinks i lubelskim UI. W 1922r. dzięki poetce Zofii Bajkowskiej została przyjęta do słynnego kabaretu Qui Pro Quo, z którym współpracowała do 1931r. W 1931 została żoną hrabiego Michała Tyszkiewicza. Po zamknięciu Qui Pro Quo występowała z własnymi recitalami w kraju i na scenach warszawskich teatrzyków - m.in. Bandy, Wielkiej Rewii i Cyrulika Warszawskiego. Śpiewała w Niemczech, ZSRR, Grecji, Palestynie, występowała w teatrach dramatycznych, grała w filmach. Hanka Ordonówna escaped from Warsaw, being under German occupation, in 1940 and found a shelter at home in Vilnius, being... under Soviet occupation at that time. There was a theatre which with "opened arms" welcomed the famous soloist. They obviously played only what Russian censorship allowed them to play. In the group of artists, Ordonówna met a young woman of a striking beauty, who was beginning to act and sing publicly. They liked each other and the older one handed over her two great songs to the younger: "Mein Idishe Momme" and "Callecita de mi barrio"; her greatest hits. Hanna Skarżanka (1917-1992), that was the name of the young actress, listened to her lady-tutor attentively and accepted advices how to treat the musical material and how to interpret the words. Skarżanka kept 'Mein Idishe Momme' as a main point of her recitals all her life through. Outstanding interpretation of the great song about the mother's love to the child who tragically got lost.
