1984 by George Orwell / Nineteen Eighty-Four / Film Movie

BBC Television's live production of George Orwell's "1984". Produced in 1954. Creative Commons license: Public Domain. Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic dystopian novel by English author George Orwell. Published in 1949, it is set in the eponymous year and focuses on a repressive, totalitarian regime. The story follows the life of one seemingly insignificant man, Winston Smith, a civil servant assigned the task of falsifying records and political literature, thus effectively perpetuating propaganda, who grows disillusioned with his meagre existence and so begins a rebellion against the system. The novel has become famous for its portrayal of surveillance and society's increasing encroachment on the rights of the individual. Since its publication the terms Big Brother and Orwellian have entered the popular vernacular. Orwell, who had "encapsulated the thesis at the heart of his novel" in 1944, wrote most of Nineteen Eighty-Four on the island of Jura, Scotland, during 19471948 while critically ill with tuberculosis. He sent the final typescript to his friends Secker and Warburg on 4 December 1948 and the book was published on 8 June 1949. Nineteen Eighty-Four has been translated into more than 50 languages. The novel's title, its terms, its language (Newspeak), and its author's surname are bywords for personal privacy lost to national state security. The adjective "Orwellian" denotes many things. It can refer to totalitarian action or organization, as well as governmental ...

Animal Farm-George Orwell (Full Length Animated Movie 1954)

Animal Farm is a British animated film by Halas and Batchelor, based on the book of the same name by George Orwell, that was published in England on August 17, 1945, and written during World War II. It was the first British animated feature released worldwide. Despite the title and Disney-esque animal animation, it is in fact a no-holds-barred adaptation of George Orwell's classic satire on Stalinism, with the animals taking over their farm by means of a revolutionary coup, but then discovering that although all animals are supposed to be equal, some are more equal than others. Enjoy this early adaptation from 1954/6 on BBC TV. "Nineteen Eighty-Four (first published in 1949) by George Orwell is a dystopian novel about Oceania, a society ruled by the oligarchical dictatorship of the Party. Life in the Oceanian province of Airstrip One is a world of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance, and incessant public mind control, accomplished with a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (Ingsoc), which is administered by a privileged Inner Party elite. Yet they too are subordinated to the totalitarian cult of personality of Big Brother, the deified Party leader who rules with a philosophy that decries individuality and reason as thoughtcrimes; thus the people of Oceania are subordinated to a supposed collective greater good. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party who works for the Ministry of Truth (Minitrue), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to re-write past newspaper articles so that the historical record is congruent with the current party ideology. Because of the childhood trauma of the destruction of his family — the disappearances of his parents and sister — Winston Smith secretly hates the Party, and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. George Orwell - Animal Farm (1954) 1/5

In Orwell's original book, the animals simply look on in dismay as they come to realise that the pigs have become nothing better than the human masters of old. In a stark departure from Orwell's book, the film ends immediately after this iconic image with the animals revolting against the pigs. John Halas, one half of the directing team, later reflected that the film needed the happier ending of counter-revolution, as it rewarded the audience for their emotional investment. The animation historian Brian Sibley doubts that the team responsible was aware of the source of the funding, which is now accepted to have come from the Central Intelligence Agency, whose concern was to facilitate the creation of anti-communist art.[1] CIA involvement In 2000, The New York Times printed an article alleging that the CIA had been covertly involved in the purchase of the film rights from Orwell's widow. They subsequently went on to modify the screenplay from the original novel to overemphasize the anti-communist byline of the original story. The CIA's funding and deep editorial involvement in the film is demonstrated and thoroughly examined in Daniel Leab's 2007 book Orwell Subverted: The CIA and the Filming of Animal Farm (2007) Pennsylvania State University Press. The CIA continues to decline Freedom of Information Act requests concerning the film.

Orwellian revision of history in Texas classrooms

In his book, Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell described a corrupt government which didn't approve of its actual history, so they changed it to one which would made it easier to manipulate the populace. Religious extremists on the Texas State Board of Education now seek to do the same thing, -after having already vandalized the studies of science and health- in the name of censorship and propaganda, and in the hope that all the other states bow to the whim to Texas fundamentalists. Don't. It's time to fix this broken system. It's time to revise the system such that uneducated and unqualified political ideologues no longer oppose all the experts in every field of study we need to teach. Please review the Texas Freedom Network's campaign to de-politicize the classroom, to 'just educate' our students. www.tfn.org

Orwell Was Right-New Street Lights To Have "Homeland Security" Applications.flv

New street lights that include "Homeland Security" applications including speaker systems, motion sensors and video surveillance are now being rolled out with the aid of government funding. The Intellistreets system comprises of a wireless digital infrastructure that allows street lights to be controlled remotely by means of a ubiquitous wi-fi link and a miniature computer housed inside each street light, allowing for "security, energy management, data harvesting and digital media," according to the Illuminating Concepts website. According to the company's You Tube video of the concept, the primary capabilities of the devices include "energy conservation, homeland security, public safety, traffic control, advertising, video surveillance." In terms of Homeland Security applications, each of the light poles contains a speaker system that can be used to broadcast emergency alerts, as well as a display that transmits "security levels" (presumably a similar system to the DHS' much maligned color-coded terror alert designation), in addition to showing instructions by way of its LED video screen. The lights also include proximity sensors that can record both pedestrian and road traffic. The video display and speaker system will also be used to transmit Minority Report-style advertising, as well as Amber Alerts and other "civic announcements". With the aid of grant money from the federal government, the company is about to launch the first concept installation of the system in ...

George Orwell on Socialism

It pays to actually read Orwell for oneself: "I am well aware that it is now the fashion to deny that Socialism has anything to do with equality. In every country in the world a huge tribe of party-hacks and sleek little professors are busy 'proving' that Socialism means no more than a planned state-capitalism with the grab-motive left intact. But fortunately there also exists a vision of Socialism quite different from this. The thing that attracts ordinary men to Socialism and makes them willing to risk their skins for it, the 'mystique' of Socialism, is the idea of equality; to the vast majority of people Socialism means a classless society, or it means nothing at all. And it was here that those few months in the militia were valuable to me. For the Spanish militias, while they lasted, were a sort of microcosm of a classless society. In that community where no one was on the make, where there was a shortage of everything but no privilege and no boot-licking, one got, perhaps, a crude forecast of what the opening stages of Socialism might be like. And, after all, instead of disillusioning me it deeply attracted me. The effect was to make my desire to see Socialism established much *more* actual than it had been before." From chapter 8 of "Homage to Catalonia" (1938). It is from this book (really a memoir) that one gets perhaps the fullest picture of what attracted Orwell to socialism. His book, as well as his name, have become synonymous with privacy concerns involving technology and also an all-powerful, oppressive ruling elite that strictly governs the activities of the population with an iron fist. Orwell's book is where we get the term Big Brother from, such as when people say "Big Brother is watching you."
