MV-22 Osprey Departure 2008 NAS Oceana Airshow NAS Oceana, Virginia Sunday September 21, 2008 IN THIS VIDEO, watch as this silver-painted MV-22 Osprey departs from NAS Oceana to head back to its home base of MCAS New River, North Carolina. This was my first time seeing an Osprey in the air (aside from it arriving on Thursday) and what struck me more than anything else was how quiet it is. I also don't particularly care for the song playing in the background. The videos from Friday and Saturday were pretty bad because of the winds, but they weren't as bad on Sunday, as you can tell in this video. Like what you've seen? Alewives are fish that belong to the Herring family. They migrate from the ocean to fresh water to spawn at this time of the year. In a small, quaint town called Nobleboro in Maine (1 hour north of Portland on the coast) they converge by the millions to climb a fish ladder (only about 20 feet wide at one point) to spawn in Damariscotta Lake. The Osprey, Eagles and Seagulls have a feast with non-stop fishing.This particular Osprey will have 2 feasts. I stood ready for 2 days, with my 500m lens wailting for the moment when an osprey would dive. I took a break from the vigil and walked to another location to stretch my legs. Then it happened. This Oprey dove right in front of me and my 500mm lens, camera and tripod were elsewhere. Fortunately, I was carrying my backup camera (Canon 20D) with my 100-400mm lens and got this shot.

When the Real Osprey's came out, my super machinist friend, Dave Raubinger and I connected the 2 sets of Hyperfly mechanics together to make a tilt rotor some 20 years ago. He still has the prototype and I may get it back to see if I can resurrect it with today's electronics. New Osprey Full Tilt first flight (airplane transforms to helicopter)
This is the new Osprey Full Tilt from air hogs it is a true VTOL aircraft, it takes off like a helicopter, then it transitions into airplane mode for fast forward flight, then it can transition back to helicopter mode in mid flight for a hovering landing. It is a 2 channel aircraft, the left stick controls thrust and the right stick controls left and right motion as well as transitions. when the right stick is all the way back the air craft is in helicopter mode, when you push the right stick forward the aircraft transitions into airplane mode. In helicopter mode one of the wings tilts forward and backwards independently to control left and right motion, the aircraft hovers slightly forward at all times. you can adjust the left right "roll" trim with a small knob and you can adjust the spin trim with 2 trim buttons. The roll trim is only affective in hover mode. In airplane mode left right turns are accomplished by variations in thrust between the engines. It charges on the transmitter in about 30 or 45 minutes Flight times are about 5 minutes. This aircraft is really a lot fun, it does a really good job transitioning back and forth in mid air and it is a lot more stable then I expected it to be during the transition, in fact when you tell it to go into helicopter mode it slows down to a nice hover with almost no effort, then it can transition back to airplane mode with no problems at all. Video shows an in-flight attack of an osprey by a red-winged blackbird. Also shows Osprey diving after fish, feeding nestlings, tearing food apart, swooping, calling, defending nest, responding to intruders, protecting nestlings, nestling, flying and other characteristics of their lives. In one part of the video, the osprey carries a large chunk of fish in its talons. In other parts, osprey can be seen diving for prey. The osprey can fly to from Venezuela to Ohio in 2 weeks. It can fly at 60 mph and can cover 600 miles in one day. The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is also called the fish eagle, seahawk, or fish hawk. It is a huge fish-eating predator. This raptor is 24 in. in length, has a 6 ft. wingspan, and can weigh up to almost 5 lbs. Its head is white with a dark mask across the eyes that reaches to the sides of the neck. The irises of its eyes are golden to brown with a transparent bale blue nictitating membrane. It is whitish on the head and underparts with a brownish eyepatch and wings. It has a very complicated call, as shown here-with a large vocabulary of sounds. Its calls include sharp whistles, and a sort of shreek. In this video, as boaters approached the nest, the birds gave a great variety of calls. The Osprey can arch its wings, which gives it a gull type appearance. This is the osprey full tilt vtol, it's one of the best aircraft I've ever flown. it takes off like a helicopter and then turns into an airplane in mid air then it can turn back into a heli and come in for a vertical landing. in helicopter and airplane mode the left stick controls thrust and the right stick controls turning. you also use the right stick to transition from hover to forward flight, moving it left and right turns the aircraft left and right and moving it up and down transitions you from a helicopter to an airplane. It flies great in both helicopter and airplane mode. when you first lunch it, it hovers forward at a slow speed on its own, you control its thrust up and down and its turning,when you push the right stick forward it transitions form helicopter mode to airplane mode, the transition to airplane mode is quick, as soon as you push the stick forward it starts flying like an airplane. When you pull the right stick back to transition back to helicopter mode, the wings slowly tilt up at the perfect speed so that you don't flip or stall, the aircraft will come to a hover after about 15 feet of slowing down. their is only a split second during transition that the left right controls have no effect because it is switching from the tilting wing helicopter control system to the differential thrust airplane control mode. The Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey is a multi-mission, military, tiltrotor aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The V-22 was developed and is manufactured jointly by Bell Helicopter, and Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. The joint development team is known as Bell Boeing.The United States Marine Corps and Air Force operate the Osprey.

Osprey 10-40x50mm Riflescope, DPMS 308, Timney Trigger, CAA Monopod Review
Review of the Osprey 10-40x50mm Riflescope mounted on a DPMS LR308. I purchased this scope as a temporary solution because I was on a budget and could not afford what I really wanted... a Nightforce 12-42x56mm scope. I didn't expect much in the way of performance, build quality or durability. I mean how could a $150 scope compare in any way, shape or form to a $1300 scope? Add to that the horror stories I read about Osprey and I was a little concerned. To my great surprise, my fears were not realized and in fact, I was very pleased and by how this scope performs. The only negative was the rings that were included. They were garbage in my experience -- the scope could not be zeroed because there was not enough windage adjustment to even come close. I tossed them aside and installed Leupold rings instead. Problem fixed. Bottom line is that this scope holds its zero, is very clear up until about 38x, then gets a little blurry (but is still very usable at 40x). It survived 700+ rounds of 308 ammo and is still going strong. For $150 (at the time of this video) it comes with an awful lot of features and it functions really well! Someday I will get my Nightforce scope (and I'll review it as well), but until then... I am very happy with this Osprey scope!!! (20 degree tilt each way) It is a very ingenious design and not as difficult to fly as one that would transform into full on forward flight. There are no elevators, rudders, or ailerons to steer it in forward flight, so it is also much cheaper. It is a blast to fly and I especially like to look at it in the air.
