Title : Johann Strauss II - Die Fledermaus Overture From Wikipedia, Die Fledermaus (in English: The Bat;' in French: La Chauve-souris') is an operetta composed by Johann Strauss II to a German libretto by Carl Haffner and Richard Genée. The original source for Die Fledermaus is a farce by German playwright Julius Roderich Benedix (1811--1873), Das Gefängnis (The Prison). Another source is a French vaudeville play, Le réveillon, by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. This was first translated by Carl Haffner into a non-musical play to be produced in Vienna. However, the peculiarly French custom of the réveillon (a midnight supper party) caused problems, which were solved by the decision to adapt the play as a libretto for Johann Strauss, with the réveillon replaced by a Viennese ball. At this point Haffner's translation was handed over for adaptation to Richard Genée, who subsequently claimed not only that he had made a fresh translation from scratch but that he had never even met Haffner. The operetta premièred on April 5, 1874 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria and has been part of the regular operetta repertoire ever since. It currently appears as number 19 on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operatic works in North America.

I found the video for the first half (which is VERY high quality, and the best looking footage I have found of Tanglewood) up until halfway into Christmas on Tommy on the Wolfgang's Vault facebook page, where it probably is still available. I got the second half of the video, which is very rough VHS quality but yet still the best currently available, from the Tanglewood 1970 HIWATT torrent on www.longliverock.org. Both the video that I got off of Wolfgang's Vault and the second half off of LongLiveRock DID NOT have very good audio - some was a live feed mono soundboard mix, and some was from an audience recording, and it sounded pretty terrible. Then, I found out that Wolfgang's Vault released a remastered version of the audio, which is the official recording, in stereo, and it sounded GREAT! Unfortunately, it did not sync up very well with the video. The video's tape speed fluctuated CONSTANTLY, especially at the end with My Generation and on the second half with the VHS footage, so I ended up making about 500 or 600 <b>...</b>

Tchaikovsky was commissioned by Nicolas Rubinstein in 1880 to write a festive and patriotic piece to coincide with the Moscow Cathedral of the Savior(built to commemorate the liberation of the Russians from the 1812 Napoleonic invasion), there already existed a body of precedent for the use of brass band, church bells, and cannon together with symphony orchestra. Plans seems to indicate open-air performance in the great square before the Kremlin, with the cannon to be fired by electrical signal from the conductor's desk, while at a given signal the bells of the new Cathedral, together with the hundreds of bells hung in all the other Kremlin churches and towers, were to add thier festive clamor to the whole grand uproar. However,the Cathedral consecration took place in the summer 1881 minus Tchaikovsky's music. It was Edward Napravnik who finally conducted the premiere of the Overture 1812 during ad all-Tchaikovsky concert at the Moscow Exhibition-presumably under normal concert hall conditions. Written and song by guitarist, keyboard player, singer and songwriter Roger Hodgson, the song tells about World War II England and the lessons learned from it. The song, which is over 10 minutes long, is a collage of progressive instrumentation and sound samples. First there are excerpts of Winston Churchill's famous June 4, 1940 House of Commons speech regarding England's involvement in World War II ("Never Surrender"), and later sounds of police cars and church bells are heard. The flageolet-sounding instrument plays an excerpt from Gustav Holst's "Venus", from his orchestral suite The Planets. The piece was written to commemorate Russia's defense of Moscow against Napoleon's advancing Grande Armée at the Battle of Borodino in 1812. The Overture debuted in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow on August 20, 1882 (in the Gregorian or NS calendar; the date in the Julian or OS calendar was 8 August). The overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire and ringing chimes. Note: people are taking this video way too seriously and reading way more into it than they need to. This is just a video of some enormous explosions - the largest mankind has ever produced. Everyone loves explosions, right? They're eyecandy and pretty damn impressive. These were tests, nobody was hurt directly by these. Yes, we can have a long debate about what the long term concequences of the fallout are and we can turn this into a big argument over the United States' place in the world, the Soviet Union, the Cold War, Hiroshima, the ethics of having nuclear weapons at all, the enviornmental impact of tests, the validity of nuclear weapons as a deterrent, Hiroshima, Nagasaki etc etc etc... DON'T BE THAT GUY! Just enjoy the goddamned explosions. You may have seen the 1812 overture done with fireworks before, but here are some REALLY big fireworks. The movie does not account for the fact that it takes time for the sound to get from the explosion to the observer, because it wouldn't look as cool then. And yes..those troops are very close to the explosions. It was not completely understood at the time the consequences of longterm exposure to fallout. Most of them were okay in the long run, but a few had problems. Too bad...
