This a tour with details of an off-grid solar power installation I worked on a few years ago. I go over a system diagram, show the system itself, and then talk about the safety features including breakers/fuses, lightning arrestors, and bonding equipment to ground. This system includes 2100watts of solar panels, a 10kW diesel generator, two Outback FM-80 charge controllers, two Outback inverters, an Outback Mate, a Xantrex TMA-500 battery status monitor, and 6 4volt, 1104amphour Surrette/Rolls lead acid deep cycle batteries. All brands of rechargeable trimmers have a battery life issue because they need to remain lightweight. Over time the charge controller board does not allow for a good deep battery charge so they only last a minute. You can find them at yard sales all the time. If you have a spare panel with MC connectors this is a fun easy fix. An external charge controller (not shown) can be added for quick solar charges needed in heavily shaded areas. You can use up to a 50 ft extension cord before voltage becomes a problem. Great solution for larger yards far from power. No more burning up electric AC trimmers with 200 ft of cord. I guess you could use a gas trimmer but the exhaust is very bad for you.

Wirsol has completed its first UK solar project, installing a 29.6 kilowatt system at Sharnbrook School in Bedfordshire. The leading German solar provider, which has recently opened a UK-based office, completed the installation in just five working days. The 29.6 kWp installation provides electricity for the school's new building and to help control energy costs in the overall expansion of the school premises. Wirsol utilised Yingli solar panels and SMA inverter stations at Sharnbrook, which is the first in a line of projects scheduled to receive solar installations by the company, for regional colleges and schools in both the public and private sector.
