1998. The Playstation was king. Sony was feeling cocky. Using artists from Ren & Stimpy, they created Blasto. In one of the first successful attempts to do so, Blasto employs celebrity voice talent - the late, great, Phil Hartman, voices Captain Blasto. Despite a towering mountain of hype, Blasto was a case of style and glamour over substance. The game was beautiful by Playstation standards, but frusterating difficult to play. Perhaps Sony Interactive wanted the game to be difficult, much like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry 3 are for today's gamers, but Blasto's controls were nowhere near responsive enough for this, and numerous jumping puzzles combined with Blasto's stubby jumping height mean many jumps are difficult to make - add on to all of that endlessly respawning enemies - and lots of frusterating, unnecessary deaths are to follow. The game was panned by critics and not well accepted. In it, you play as Blasto, a wise cracking space captain who goes around the galaxy saving babes from aliens. A sequel was planned, but when Hartman died, it was canceled. The framerate craps out in spots because I played this via emulation, and it was streaming content from the disc.

Play burned/pirated/homebrewd games on an unmodified ps! Just press the disc cover sensor down to get the disc going withouta cover. Problems? Try to understand what the psx is doing. Authentity check, game data, authentity check, "ok it's valid, boot". For an authentity check the laser moves right next to the spindle hub. Watch it starting an original disc to get a better idea. Also make sure you burned the game correctly, using the .cue/.ccd whatever tiny file came with it. Burn at slow speeds, too.

If you want to build your own chip, you'll need a fitting PIC with 8 legs (12c508, 12c508a, 12c509 or 12c509a) and a PIC programmer to flash it with the designated hex code (MM3, OneChip, etc.). This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS1. I'm playing on a PS2 with texture smoothing on. Tail Concerto is one of the most criminally underrated games in the entire PS1 library. Don't let it's cutesy appearance fool you, this game is extremely addictive. It's similar in style to the Mega Man Legends games except it focuses more on platformer elements over exploration like Legends does. The game does have the occasional control and camera issues, and is a little short, but it's an extremely fun game to play, and an extremely underrated one too. I almost couldn't put it down to make this vid. It's one of those games that that you have to play to truly appreciate. Watching someone play the game may make it come off as annoying, but playing it will suck you in. It's art style reminds me of a PS2 game called Sky Gunner (I's in my Underrated PS2 vids), or should I say that Sky Gunner's art style reminds me of Tail Concerto. Tail Concerto is only available on the PS1. Some of you out there may be familiar with this game, because it was a Japanese import demo on one of the Playstation Underground Jampacks.

Namco's answer to Virtua Fighter. Tekken is a 3D fighter fought almost soley on a 2D pane (though you can change the camera to be overhead if you wish). It was also solid four button fighter that worked uniquely with each button mapped to a limb. Besides that, Tekken lacked the silly projectile and super combo attacks that SNK and Capcom were intent on developing. As a European Playstation launch title, Tekken was one of the many reasons I was pumped about getting a PSX back in the day. Promotional videos alone would show numerous clips from Tekken's gameplay and beautiful full motion video sequences that were great for the time. However fast forward a year later and Namco would of refined what made Tekken into a decent one-on-one brawler into a near-perfect Playstation classic with Tekken 2. Given so, Tekken now is almost stupidly dated in comparison and it is safe to say you'd be better buying the sequels instead - you won't be missing out on a whole lot anymore.
