Papandreou on need for Greek euro referendum

Greece is with its back up against the wall after Germany and France on Wednesday evening told the Greek Prime Minister that his country will not receive EU bailout money until it decides on whether it wants to stay in the Eurozone or not. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy delivered this message in conference in Cannes, where G20 leaders are meeting on Thursday and Friday. Greek prime minister Papandreou was summoned to Cannes after his shock announcement that the Greek government plans to hold a referendum on the European plan to save his country from bankruptcy. Papandreou said a referendum on the euro can take place as early as the 4th of December. It remains very unclear if it will actually happen. If the Greek parliament on Friday rejects the plan for the vote, then Papandreou will be forced to step down as Prime Minister and new elections will have to be held.

Exclusive: Ex-Greek PM George Papandreou on Fiscal Crisis and Why He Backs Occupy Movement

www.democracynow.org - In an exclusive interview, Democracy Now! speak with former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, who is attending the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa. Papandreou was forced to resign last month when he suggested holding a national referendum to allow the Greek people to have a say in whether they would accept the European Union's bailout plan which would necessitate severe austerity cuts. We speak to Papandreou about the financial crisis, the role of banks and the importance of the growing Occupy Wall Street movement. "The Occupy Wall Street movements ... are saying something very, very specific. That inequality in the end is an inequality of power. And we need to redistribute power, not just money. Power ---- and this is I think the Democratic challenge that we have today," Papandreou says. Papandreou wins cabinet backing for debt gamble

www.euronews.net After a marathon seven hour emergency meeting Greece's cabinet has decided to back Prime Minister George Papandreou's proposal for a referendum on a crucial European Union aid deal. The premier fought off a barrage of criticism with some calling him to quit for jeopardising Greek euro membership. But in the end they agreed to ask the Greek people, but probably not before January. Papandreou is gambling the referendum will give him a clear mandate to proceed with austerity measures to cope with the country's debts - but it is a risk.

New Greek premier expected soon as Papandreou steps aside

www.nma.tv A new Greek premier is expected soon as George Papandreou has stepped aside. The motto of Amherst College is "Terras Irradient", that's Latin for "let them enlighten the lands." Enlightened or not, Amherst alumnus George Papandreou and opposition leader Antonis Samaras certainly lit up the political landscape in Greece with drama lately. After flip-flopping on an EU bailout deal and incurring the ire of just about everyone, Papandreou finally decided to step down. An interim premier will be appointed, but when elections are held next year, the person who ends up with the seat could be his old college roommate/frenemy for life Samaras. As students, Papandreou was a left-wing flower child who liked to strum on his guitar. Samaras, on the other hand, was a conservative Econ major who loved free market economics on one hand and hosting parties with lots of Smithies on the other. Over pizza in their dorm room, the two joked about ruling Greece together. But they joined different political parties and ended up being bitter rivals instead. Papandreou followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps and became Prime Minister in 2009. In the same year, Samaras was elected leader of the main opposition party. Papandreou is not the only EU leader to lose his job as the sovereign debt crisis racks Europe. Berlusconi is also stepping down from his post as Prime Minister of Italy.

Papandreou steps aside for unity government

www.euronews.net Greek premier George Papandreou is to step down as part of a deal to form a unity government. His going broke deadlocked talks after the EU demanded Greece's parties join forces to avert bankruptcy. It is not clear who will lead the interim administration - those discussions will continue today - but it will be charged with getting a euro zone bailout approved.

Merkel and Sarkozy Bully Papandreou for wanting to be DEMOCRATIC by asking the PEOPLE!

From: Russia Today One-sided story: Greece hijacks G20 summit Published: 04 November, 2011, 12:02 The Greek turmoil has taken over the G20 summit in Cannes, France. Observers have only been able to guess just what it was that Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy said to the Greek Prime Minister that caused his backtrack on referendum plans. The final day of the G20 in Cannes will have three working sessions and will end with a press conference given by Nicolas Sarkozy. Greece's difficulties have taken over the entire summit, with other issues being pushed aside. The latest news of the summit is Greek Prime Minister's backtracking on the national referendum on the EU bailout package. The EU leaders, especially those of France and Germany, were very satisfied with this decision of the Greek leadership. "The leader of the opposition made a statement indicating that he supported the 27th of October plan," the French president has said. "That's a very important and courageous step. Mr. Papandreou's statements also indicate that the referendum is not an end in itself; that it was a tool that was going to be considered, but since the opposition supported the plan, then it became less useful." Some critics see the entire situation from a different angle, saying that France and Germany have basically said to Athens: "You either play by our rules or get out." Eventually, Greece has decided it does not want to leave the eurozone rt.com ...

Papandreou calls referendum on EU deal

www.euronews.net The Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has called a referendum on a new EU aid package to ask voters whether they want it or not. A "no" vote could throw the question of the country's solvency up in the air again, raising more serious questions for the euro zone. The prime minister said a referendum was the "highest form of democracy" and would allow the people to decide. He also said a vote of no-confidence would be held, but ruled out elections. No date was set but the referendum should take place in the next few weeks.

Papandreou: It is time for euro leaders to make decisions collectively

George Papandreou, Greece Prime Minister, on Wednesday told journalists waiting outside the European Council that euro leaders need to make decisions "collectively". He also outlined that one of their main challenges is not only to safeguard the euro, but also to protect the ideals that Europe "cherish" so much. The Greek Prime Minister highlighted the "superhuman" effort that Greeks are making to make their economy "confident" and "viable".
