Interview with Antonio Pappano on "Stabat Mater" (Anna Netrebko / Maria Pizzolato)

www.deutschegrammophon.com Watch conductor Antonio Pappano speak about the upcoming album "Stabat Mater" with Anna Netrebko which reveals her admiration for Pergolesi and her love for his Stabat Mater. The music was recorded at Netrebko's July 2010 Baden-Baden concert where she was joined by the beautifully schooled tones of Marianna Pizzolato's mezzo voice and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Antonio Pappano. Besides "Stabat mater", one of classical music's most popular works, the album includes a secular cantatas for soprano "Nel chiuso centro" and "Questo è il piano, also a secular cantata for alto and strings. Both cantatas add a special touch to this album being released in Spring 2011. The recording includes star soloists Anna Netrebko, Joyce DiDonato, Lawrence Brownlee and Ildebrando d'Arcangelo. Although Rossini focused heavily on opera, he was still able to find some time to undertake commissions of a non-operatic nature. Supreme among these was to be the Stabat Mater. "I would say that the Stabat Mater - the picture of the Virgin Mary standing below the crucifix watching her son die and this beautiful set of prayers or scene setting is sublimely put to music by Rossini." says Maestro Pappano. Pappano's recent releases with the Roman orchestra includes the award-wining and critically-acclaimed Verdi Requiem, Respighi's 'Roman Trilogy', the Tchaikovsky Symphonies 4-6 and Puccini's opera 'Madama Butterfly' with Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann which won Gheorghiu the Female Artist of the Year honour at this year's Classical Brit Awards. It shows how Verdi's music was influenced by composers such as Bellini and particularly Donizetti, whose gothic masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor is explored with the help of soprano Diana Damrau. Pappano looks at six of Verdi's most famous works - Nabucco, Rigoletto, Don Carlo, Otello, Falstaff and La Traviata, the last of which Pappano rehearses and conducts at the Royal Opera House with the starry cast of Renee Fleming, Joseph Calleja and Thomas Hampson. Pappano travels to Le Roncole in northern Italy where Verdi was born amidst a turbulent political environment, and politics became a major influence on Verdi's operas in later life. He conducts Va Pensiero from Nabucco at a vast open-air concert in Naples, a chorus which was to become a powerful symbol of political unity for the Italian people.

Rolando Villazon - Antonio Pappano- Werther ROH 5 to 21 may 2011

Star tenor Rolando Villazón returns to The Royal Opera as the epitome of the despairing Romantic poet, Werther. Goethe's original novel was a European sensation in its day, and Massenet's opera brings out all the intensity of its portrayal of the unrequited love and dashed hopes -- atmospheric, tuneful and poignant. Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera, conducted this stylish production by director Benoît Jacquot when it was new in 2004. He conducts again for this first revival, and with a wonderful cast that includes two audience favourites, Sophie Koch and Eri Nakamura. The lyrical French style that is so characteristic of Massenet's music has increasingly featured at the Royal Opera House, and the opportunity to enjoy this mature work of the composer is a complement to last Season's Manon and this Season's Cendrillon. For all lovers of French opera, fine singing, melodious music and emotionally arresting drama, Werther is an ideal choice.

Verdi: Messa da Requiem - Antonio Pappano, Rolando Villazon

Verdi: Messa da Requiem - Anja Harteros, Sonia Ganassim Rolando Villazon, Rene Pape / Orchestra e Coro dellAccademia di Santa Cecilia, Antonio Pappano Following the release of his critically acclaimed recording of Madama Butterfly, Music Director Antonio Pappano returned to the Orchestra and Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in January 2009 for performances of Verdis spectacular Requiem with stellar soloists Anja Harteros, Sonia Ganassi, Rolando Villazón and René Pape. EMI Classics microphones were at hand to record the concerts. In the words of Antonio Pappano, himself born to Italian parents, this is a Requiem written by an Italian and I think Italians relationship to religion is explosive, full of temperament, full of fear. . And the spectre of being punished, of sins it sounds like an opera Im describing. I love doing this piece here in Rome with an Italian chorus and an Italian orchestra, and they have an innate sense of what this music is about, how to bring it to life. They really know what the words mean. They have lived what it is to be religious or spiritual in Italy. Interviewed at the time of the performances, Rolando Villazón discusses the same subject: Many say that this is the best opera Verdi ever wrote. Clearly its not but the theatricality of the piece requires something more than what you would use for an oratorio Its a very delicate balance singers have to have. You have to respect the style of this church piece, and at the same time ...

Ian Bostridge - Wolf Lieder with Antonio Pappano

Ian Bostridges love for Lieder is beyond doubt and being one of the leading interpreters in the field makes a Hugo Wolf album a natural selection for him. Hugo Wolf introduced into the Lied the harmonic innovations and declamatory principles of Wagner operas. More than any other composer he respected the texts and hardly ever wrote a strophic song: every nuance and inflexion of their speech-melody, generally finds its counterpart in the vocal line of his songs, while the accompaniments are usually built up out of one or two phrases which are expanded and developed on symphonic principles. The characterization of each song demands the utmost artistry from both performers. It is difficult to imagine a better pairing for an album of this repertoire than Ian Bostridge - famed for his analytical grasp - and conductor Antonio Pappano - who collaborates with Ian on this recording as a pianist for the first time. Both artists are at the top of their skills, and their musical partnership is very special.
