Papua New Guinea: Land of the Unexpected

Get more great videos: www.youtube.com Be our Myspace friend: myspace.com Few areas of the globe can match Papua New Guinea in terms of biodiversity. The country's rugged natural settings are home to a staggering array of wildlife, including more than 21000 species of higher plants, 200 species of mammals, and 700 species of birds. Papua New Guinea's indigenous clans are linguistically just as diverse; more than 800 languages are spoken within the nation's borders. These numerous clans also hold the key to conserving both their cultural and natural wealth of their country, specifically because they control approximately 90 percent of the nation's territory through a system of traditional land tenure. Because almost all of the land in Papua New Guinea is owned by its people, and not by the government, conservation efforts need to be approved and enforced by the local landowners. Crater Mountain is one of these landowner and NGO cooperative conservation initiatives in PNG.

Tribal Fighting - Papua New Guinea

July 2007 Steve Marshall reports on the changing face of tribal warfare in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Highland tribes have traditionally used violence to solve disputes - over everything from land control to wives and livestock. Now, the disputes continue, but the weaponry has changed. These days many illegal guns have made their way into the hands of tribal fighters. From bows and arrows to illegal semi-automatic weapons -- the fallout is devastating. "When he was killed I was left with three kids to look after and it's hard for me", a widow in the Western Highlands tells Marshall. Tribal fighters confirmed that the drugs for guns trade between PNG and the top end of Australia is also alive and well. "Some of our businessman who are out there in Australia they buy the guns and send it up to us here", said tribal fighter Moses Kauga. At a time when PNG voters are going to the polls for the 2007 national elections, Steve Marshall also reveals claims that PNG politicians themselves might be involved in the trade.

Interview: Papua New Guinea troop mutiny

Damien Kingsbury, professor of international relations at Deakin University, talked to Al Jazeera from Melbourne, Australia, about the troop mutiny in Papua New Guinea. He termed the development as "a likely a countercoup". "There is tense and uncertain situation," Kingsbury said. "There is no external mediation, no neutral party at the moment, and unless both sides step back from current position there is very good chance it will lead to conflict in the near future."

WEST PAPUAN REFUGEES IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

For nearly 50 years the people of West Papua have suffered under brutal Indonesian colonial rule and up to 400000 civilians have lost their lives in Indonesian military operations. Thousands have fled across the border to seek sanctuary in Papua New Guinea. This footage was taken on Wednesday 16th February 2011, in the jungle near Vanimo, Sandaun Province, Papua New Guinea - less than 50km from the West Papua border. It shows West Papuan refugees returning to their village for the first time since it was burnt 3 weeks earlier by special operation "Sunset Merona" led by Papua New Guinea Police and Defence Force. The men came out of hiding in the bush to talk to me, and the women were able to leave for only a couple of hours where they were being held, as they told their captors they were looking for food from the garden. After I left the men went back into the bush to hide, and the women returned to where they were being held. This footage is clear evidence of contravention of the UN Charter for Refugees by Papua New Guinea, and also raises major questions about the legality of special operation Sunset Merona and the alleged involvement of the Indonesian Government in pressuring the Papua New Guinea authorities to undertake these raids. Political deadlock continues in Papua New Guinea

The political deadlock in Papua New Guinea rumbles on to its sixth day, with two men claiming to be the legitimate Prime Minister. Governor-General Michael Ogio reinstated 76-year-old Michael Somare as prime minister on Monday after the court ruled that his removal from office by Peter O'Neill in a parliamentary vote in August while he was getting medical treatment outside the country was unconstitutional. As Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Tubusereia, there is no sign yet of anything to break the deadlock.

Shark Attack at 57 metres in Papua New Guinea

Myself & my dive buddy were diving off Pidgeon Island in East New Britain Papua New Guinea. The two days previous we had been shark calling (rubbing a plastic bottle to create vibrations and sound that attract sharks) at around 30-40 metres looking for silver tip and grey reef sharks. We were pretty keen to see if we could get some bigger sharks and so decided to go deeper. I will point out that both of us are very experienced divers and fully knew the risks of diving so deep (and without the right kit too!). We descended fast down to around 57 metres, planning to spend no more than a couple of minutes there before continuing the rest of the dive as a deco dive. It was about 3 minutes into the dive when my buddy turned to see what he thinks was a big Silver Tip Reef shark (although there has been a lot of speculation as to what type of shark it was, maybe grey reef or possibly juvenile bull shark) charging in at him fast. He managed to roll over as the shark hit him and unbelievably he was unharmed. Apart from a severe headache (the shark actually hit him square in the head!) he was completely unscathed having not so much as a scratch on him. My buddy had said that when he saw the shark coming in at was going very fast but then slowed down just before hitting him, also it's mouth wasn't fully open and it made no attempt to bite. We think that what happened was that at that depth the shark would have been hunting and zoned in on the vibrations to go for a kill, upon ...

Ferry sinks off Papua New Guinea with 350 aboard

Rescuers have plucked more than 200 survivors from the sea off Papua New Guinea's east coast after a ferry sank Thursday with as many as 350 people on board, officials said. An airplane from Australia, three helicopters and eight ships were scouring the search area after the MV Rabaul Queen went down while traveling from Kimbe on the island of New Britain to coastal town of Lae on the main island, Australian Maritime Safety Authority said in a statement. The ferry sank 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Lae and 10 miles (16 kilometers) from shore, the statement said. Australian Broadcasting Corp. quoted police in Kimbe, where the ferry sailed from, as saying most of the passengers were students and trainee teachers. The authority's dedicated search and rescue airplane based in the northern Australian city of Cairns had reached the scene by afternoon and another two Australian airplanes were on the way. All three carried life rafts that could be dropped to survivors in the water. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard called the incident a "major tragedy." "Given the likely very high loss of life here, I think when this news comes to the attention of Australians around the country they will be thinking about the people of PNG as they respond to this tragedy," she added. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said the cause of the sinking was unknown. He said more than 300 people were aboard the ship, although the precise number had yet to be confirmed. Resource Rage - Papua New Guinea

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea has made a $16bn deal to extract the country's natural gas. His people have responded with violent protests, which could plunge the troubled nation back into chaos. "It's just like raping a woman. They're going to rape our resources." The landowners living along the length of the proposed pipeline have been promised huge benefits from the plan to extract gas from the Southern Highlands and export it to Asia. But they don't believe it and are up in arms: in scenes of chaos fuelled by a legacy of watching promised riches pass them by, they cut down power-lines, wielding guns and blocking roads: "You never listen - I'll chop you people". Ironically, most of the people living in the resource-rich Southern Highlands, live without power, without hospitals and without education. The MD of Australian 'Oil-Search'- which has a 29% stake in the project - agreed that the money the government has received in the past, "have not been seen in resource areas". Project Operator Exxon Mobil refused to comment. But the Governor of Gulf Province says he'll sue Exxon for over $2 billion for what he alleges are failings in their environmental impact study. With four dead, the former commander of the PNG Defence Force has confessed to fears that, "we are setting the stage for another Bougainville crisis in the Southern Highlands".

Baiyer River Wildlife Sanctuary (Papua New Guinea)

As the last of a long line of notable Zoo managers before him, Rod Ingersoll revisits the once world renowned Baiyer River Wildlife Sanctuary also known as the Baiyer River Bird Sanctuary located in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea. As the Manager during 2000-2001 Rod only spent a year in the pristine wilderness however it was enough to fall in love with the country, wildlife, culture and people of Papua New Guinea. It was an extremely challenging task to resurrect the once famous zoo and walk in the footsteps of well published past managers like Sir Edward Hollstrom, Graham George and Dr. Roy Mackay. After he was driving out of town by warring tribes, Rod wasn't done with the place and still remained extremely passionate about the zoo. Travelling back in 2003 with camera in hand, risking his life with known civil unrest and tribal enemies Rod still decided to go back to the zoo and interview local village elders to gain their perspective on zoo history. Back in Australia Rod researched everything he could find on the zoo and met as many surviving past managers as possible to make this short 15min film to honour those who have contributed to local wildlife conservation, PNG tourism and to document a small piece of otherwise lost history. As Rod struggled to find film funding to make a feature length documentary Rod shelved the idea after a few long years of juggling a family, working full time and struggling to find funding.
