Ancient Greek architects were on to something when they built the Parthenon with subtle curves and no right angles. While it remains debatable, some scholars argue that these features were intended to counter the brain's tendency to see optical illusions. www.pbs.org Watch "Secrets of the Parthenon" Tuesday, January 29 at 8pm ET/PT on PBS (check local listings). Crowned by the mighty Parthenon temple, the Acropolis rises above modern Athens; a lasting testament to Greece's glorious golden age. The Acropolis was the center of ritual and ceremony, and the religious heart of the city. The marketplace at its base is Agora, and was the hub of commercial, political and social life. Built in the 5th Century BC for the Goddess Athena, the Parthenon is considered the greatest Classical temple in the Greek world. Nestled at the foot of the Acropolis, the modern agora, or market, surrounds the ancient agora where Athenians have traded for over 3000 years. Parthenon of Poseidon built by Tadpradel and Tsherkin/Chris. Took us 3 days. Details: Blocks used: 520344 (That's with a lot of hollow areas!) Time taken: 3 days Building details: Worldedit to copy paste. Self designed. Materials used: +Glowstone +Gold blocks +Lapis Lazuli +Sand Stone +Double-halfstacks +Water +Lava +Redstone +Torches +Glass +Cobblestone The floor exterior WAS worldeditted glowstone. This is because we built day/night, and the server it was originally built on kicked us out before we could revert it to doubleslab, so we just left it, now we have a glowing floor. The parthenon still exists on envycraft. Nyxcraft can be downloaded ovar here: bit.ly

Erected by the ancient Greeks as a temple to Athena, the Parthenon has served as a church, a fortress, an ammunition dump, and the model for countless banks, courthouses, and museums across the world. It has been shot at, exploded, set on fire, rocked by earthquakes, looted for its magnificent sculptures, and subjected to restorations that have been termed catastrophic. Surprisingly, despite much abuse and renown as an icon of Western civilization, the question of how the Parthenon was built has been largely ignored until recently. Thanks to the Greek government s $10 billion restoration program, scholars are finally probing the enigmas of its planning and construction. With unprecedented access, NOVA presents the inside story of the official restoration, which reaches far beyond the challenges and controversies of conserving one of the world s best-known buildings. The researchers are confronting some truly monumental riddles: How did the ancient Athenians build their great temple with incredible precision in a mere eight years? How did they manage to incorporate subtle, eye-pleasing distortions into the Parthenon s layout, such that there are few straight lines or right angles to be seen? And, most baffling of all, how did they accomplish all of this without an overall building plan or blueprint, which would be indispensable to a modern architect? DVD available here: www.shoppbs.org

This is a downloadable paper project that I have made of the Parthenon in Athens Greece. You can download it, print it up and make it. In the video I also have footage I took of the actual Parthenon in Greece. The project is located on my website here: www.stormthecastle.com

this video is a cinema verité documentary about the Parthenon Marbles hosted in the British Museum and the ongoing controversy for the return and reunification of them. The poem recited is by Lord Byron. This video was part of moving imaging group assignment for my studies in Mutlimedia Tech. & Design in Brunel University. A model for my senior project, where I built a scaled model of the Parthenon. One side is the restored, original building facade, whereas the other side is dilapidated, reflecting the building's current state in Athens, Greece today. The materials used were paper, basswood slats, wooden dowels, styrofoam, foam-core, acrylic paint, hot glue, Sobo glue, Sculpey modeling clay, Krylon's Make It Stone spray paint, and tracing paper for the initial 2D design. I used pictures online as references for the design, and Gardner's "Art Through the Ages" to determine the exact proportions according to the Golden Ratio (9:4) used to create the actual Parthenon. PS: Props to anyone who can name all three songs playing in the background ;)

A clip from "Glory of the Parthenon" (Composition For Lyre In The Ancient Greek Phrygian Mode). This track is from my new album, "The Ancient Greek Modes"... The concept of this album, is to recreate the both the sounds of the musical modes once used in Ancient Greece (as described in the writings of Plato & Aristotle) & to restore the lost sounds of the ancient Greek Kithara - the large wooden lyre once favoured by the professional musicians of Ancient Greece... THE ANCIENT GREEK MODES The names of musical modes in use today, (eg Dorian, Mixolydian etc) although having the same names as the original Greek musical modes, were actually misnamed during the Middle Ages! Apparently, the Greeks counted intervals from top to bottom. When medieval ecclesiastical scholars tried to interpret the ancient texts, they counted from bottom to top, jumbling the information. The misnamed medieval modes are only distinguished by the ancient Greek modes of the same name, by being labelled Church Modes. It was due to a misinterpretation of the Latin texts of Boethius, that medieval modes were given the wrong Greek names! According to an article on Greece in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the original ancient Greek names for species of the octave included the following (on white keys): BB: Mixolydian EE: Dorian AA: Hypodorian DD: Phrygian GG: Hypophrygian CC: Lydian FF: Hypolydian For what Plato & Aristotle themselves had this to say about these ancient musical modes ...

A video with the still pics taken during the construction of this awesome greek monument. I left everything in there, including a couple of design mistakes, later rectified. Building took place on peaceful mode, majority of materials used were dig out by hand. I had enough stone to build everything, but I realized smooth stone doesnt look very good, so i switched to wool, used instead of marble. I edited in the wool, took a couple thousand units so had no intention to punch sheep for next quadrillion years to get it. Obsidian was used were friezes suppose to be and gold ore for the big east and west frieze on the roof. Gold blocks for the dais and gold ore was also edited in, my world is very poor on gold. Building is an exact replica, at 1.5:1 scale, 50% bigger than in reality. Exact is a loosely used term, since one can place blocks only with 1 meter (3 feet) accuracy. I kept however the proportions of the real thing, 9:4. Final dimensions: 47 wide x 99long x 29 height in the middle. Took aproximately 6 weeks to build.

Athens was an interesting city. At first we were a bit shocked, but once we got exploring, the history and ruins were so fascinating! We had AMAZING chicken Souvlaki and Lamb shanks at a restaurant called Karafakia. (Seriously you gotta go there!) We also climbed the Acropolis to the Parthenon and the view took our breath away! Greece has been engaged in a long dispute over some of the worlds most famous sculptures. The sculptures were taken from the Parthenon almost 200 years ago and brought to Britain, and the Greeks argue they should be returned to Athens.
