West Bank Euphoria: Abbas a hero despite looming US veto [Paula Slier, Ramalah, RT]

History was made this week at the UN as President Mahmoud Abbas delivered the Palestinian bid for statehood and received a standing ovation as he addressed the General Assembly. Cheering crowds gathered in Ramallah to give him a hero's welcome as he arrived from New York. Addressing the rally he declared the beginning of the Palestinian spring. When he spoke to the UN assembly on Friday jubilant scenes played out across the Palestinian territories. But words quickly turned to violence on the West Bank border, culminating in clashes between police and Palestinians. RT's Paula Slier has the story. Fears Israel wants war on Gaza to silence social anger at home [Paula Slier, RT]

Violence has flared up again in the Middle East with Israel and Gaza exchanging fire since Thursday. Hamas says it's called off its ceasefire with the Jewish State due to the continuing occupation of Palestinian lands. More than 10 people have been killed after three days of attacks on each side. The Israeli government is reported to be considering a possible ground offensive inside Gaza with 120 members of Hamas already said to have been arrested in the West Bank. That's as Israel's been gripped by massive social protests for a month now. And as RT's Paula Slier found out, many protesters believe the escalation of violence with Gaza could be used to silence public discontent.

War Gone Viral: Web leaks, pranks plague on US Afghan campaign

The war in Afghanistan today enters its 10th year, with little sign of an end. Extra American troops may now be in place, but public support for the campaign is slipping rapidly, with about two-thousand NATO troops killed in the conflict. It's a critical time for the US-led campaign, as it struggles to turn around the fight against the Taliban, ahead of the expected withdrawal of international forces next year. Afghan officials continue to back the coalition's efforts, but even they admit that after all this time there's still no tangible result.
