Paulus Hector Mair Exotica

-VIEW IN HIGH QUALITY- Music: 'Trotto' by Saltarello Weapon Forms: Scythe, Sickle, Flail, Cudgel, Duelling Shield. -From Wikipedia- Paulus Hector Mair (1517--1579) was an Augsburg civil servant, and active in the martial arts of his time. He collected Fechtbücher and undertook to compile all knowledge of the art of fencing in a compendium surpassing all earlier books. For this, he engaged the painter Jörg Breu the Younger, as well as two experienced fencers, whom he charged with perfecting the techniques before they were painted. The project was very costly, taking full four years, and according to Mair, consumed most of his family's income and property. Three versions of his compilation, and one later, less extensive manuscript, have been preserved. Not only did Mair spend huge sums on his collections and on his projects, he also had a very expensive lifestyle, frequently hosting receptions for the more important burghers of Augsburg. His own income was not sufficient for this, and during many years, he misappropriated funds from the city treasury, with the supervision of which he had been entrusted since 1541. His embezzlements were discovered in 1579, and Mair was hanged as a thief at the age of 62. VOLUMES ONLINE!!! 1) mdz10.bib-bvb.de 2) mdz10.bib-bvb.de

Friedrich Paulus - Der Gefangene (Teil 1/4)

Nuremberg Day 56 Paulus

The Soviet prosecutors made two presentations concerning the initiation of aggression in Eastern and Southern Europe and called two high ranking German military officials, Field Marshal Paulus and General Buchenhagen. When Assistant Soviet Prosecutor Zorya announced that Paulus would be produced as a prosecution witness, there was great excitement and foreboding among the defendants. On Feb. 11, 1946, Paulus testified about the Invasion of the Soviet Union and the participation of Romania, Hungary and Finland. Paulus stated the the "whole aim was conquest for the purpose of colonizing Russian territory; and by exploitation and looting them the war in the West was to be carried to an end, with the object of finally establishing supremacy over Europe". This excerpt is in German and shows the direct examination by Russian prosecutor Zorya followed by cross examination By Dr. Nelte, counsel for Keitel.

Renaissance Staff Fighting of Paulus Hector Mair, play number 2

This is a medieval/Renaissance staff play from Paulus Hector Mair's Opera Amplissimum De Arte Athletica, Volume 1, specifically play number 2. The staffplay in the video has been worked out from an original translation of Mair's Latin text. While Mair's text is quite specific for certain aspects, it can also be quite vague at the same time. For example, while the text will provide written descriptions of what happens during a certain play, yet these same descriptions do not necessarily describe the exact means of achieving those ends. At times, the means can be inferred, while at others the exact mechanics of the modus operandi can be multiple. This is easily seen in this play while parrying. In certain instances, the velocity of an attack may most easily be parried with the rear end of the staff being brought forward (such as seen in the very beginning of this staff play), having already engaged the front end in some task. Here Mair is specific in saying that by retreating with the left foot one avoids the thrust. By retreating one brings what was the rear end of the staff (in the right hand) to the front, and therefore, to the forefront of the action. A front-end parry is not as advisable as the attacker's initial thrust that comes after the low strike to the leg is terribly fast and closes the distance in a heartbeat, so the easiest way to recuperate one's self in defence is by flowing from the low parry with the front end through the Position of Deviation to a rear ...

Nuremberg Day 57 von Paulus II (update)

On Feb. 12, 1946, the cross examination of Field Marshal Friedrich von Paulus was conducted by Dr. Nelte, counsel for the Defendant Keitel. In German, Paulus agreed "that the General Staff of the Army with its large machinery was to work out details which Hitler conceived." Paulus stated that "From the way in which this task was started one could see that , after the theoretical preparation, a practical application would follow." Dr. Fritz Sauter, counsel for the defendants Funk and Schirach, asked about the legalities of the Soviet invasion. For further information, see www.roberthjackson.org.

Fundamental Longsword Guards of Paulus Hector Mair

This video is on the four fundamental guards of the longsword as they are shown in the works of Paulus Hector Mair. The vid is a simple study guide for the basic use of these guards, as there is no need for much of anything else if one hasnt got the guards down first. Just a few notes. They are covered in the video, of course, but they are worth mentioning again. The first is the tendency to have the arms well-extended from the body during swordplay (for the guards that extend the sword, of course, as there are guards not covered in this particular video that hold the sword close to the body), a fact easily noted in the many illustrations throughout the tomes. Secondly, and most interestingly, two of the guards have different names. The guard that is in parlance usually referred to as Alber, or the Guard of the Fool, in Mair is called quite clearly the Guard of the Poplar. And Vom Tag is consistently referred to as the Guard of the Day. I find these names much more poetic and appropriate, and feel that they fit in better with their counterparts, the Buffalo and the Plough. The meaning behind the names of these guards is still the same, although I would say that it is far clearer under the name of Poplar than it is under the name of Fool. All of other guard names reference what you do, so why on earth would you want to be a Fool? (yes, yes, I get the point of it all, but still I find that it is much more powerful in life to have positive associations instead of negative ...
