(c) 2011 Rey Ty, Peace Making, Peace Keeping, & Peace Building

SCRIPT BELOW: Hi Rey! Peace making, peace keeping & peace building are different, right? Yes, Rihanna. Peace making deals with "the search for a negotiated resolution of the perceived conflicts of interests between the parties" (Ryan, 1995, p. 106). Peace making involves political as well as diplomatic activity, the purpose of which is the reconciliation of perceived conflicts of interests (Ryan, 1995). What are the differences in peace making in the 1980s and today? In the 1980s, the United Nations directly intervened for the resolution of violent conflicts (Darby & MacGinty, 2000). Today, parties to the conflict are more directly involved in the peace process, with non-UN third-party interventions, usually from neighboring or regional countries. Rey, tell me something about peace keeping, please. Understanding the role of culture is important for the success of peacekeeping in specific contexts (Rubin-stein, 2008). Peace keeping refers to the operations of the United Nations in countries where there is armed conflict. Peace keepers in blue helmets do not engage in the use of arms to stop combatants. Their mere presence serves as deterrence to renewed armed fighting. Peace keepers impose order and separation among conflicting parties. Peace keepers therefore work for the prevention, moderation, and end of fighting through the intervention of a third party, such as the UN peace keeping forces. The main role" of "UN peacekeeping forces..." "is to monitor compliance with ...

The body's natural response to conflict is contraction or collapse, which move us toward oppositional or violent behavior. Anathoth Community Garden Part 1 - Food and Faith 2008

There are no doors or gates to Anathoth Community Garden. Here, lush vegetable beds join a woodlot, creek, a native plants garden, a covered pavilion, a playhouse, and a children's garden to form a gathering place where families meet to picnic, where neighbors come to walk or rest and talk, where choirs come to sing and bands come to play, and most importantly, where strangers come to eat together. Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons throughout the growing season finds garden members and guests sharing potluck meals: here homemade tortillas and a pot of pinto beans sit on a wooden table next to country fried chicken, Japanese sticky rice, Liberian sweet potato leaves, and collard greens from the previous day's harvest. Anathoth has become a place of hospitality, a place where children eat, then play with the community's elderly, a place where newly-arrived immigrants join suburbia's overscheduled and overworked professionals for a simple meal at the edge of a quiet garden. In this place, to eat is still something more than to maintain bodily functions. People may not understand what that 'something more' is, but they nonetheless desire to celebrate it. They are still hungry and thirsty for sacramental life. (Alexander Schmemann).

Women In Peacemaking

There is still a strikingly low number of women mediators in formal peace processes, and the inclusion of gender considerations in decision-making to end conflicts remains limited. United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 calls for a growing commitment by governments and international organisations to encourage the stronger involvement of women in peace negotiations and an improved representation and contribution of women to peacemaking. The HD Centre considers gender issues to be crucial for sustainable peace in its mediation work. We therefore attempt to promote women and gender considerations in our own mediation and that of others. This video shows some of these efforts and contains discussions of the relevant issues.
