Penderecki: "The Dream of Jacob"

Krzysztof Penderecki: "The Dream of Jacob" (1974). Penderecki found as his source of inspiration a quote from Genesis 28:16, "And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not."

Orthodox choir music - Krzysztof Penderecki: Kheruvimskaya pesn/Song of the Cherubim

Orthodox choir music of the 20th Century Krzysztof Penderecki (born in 1933): Kheruvimskaya pesn/Song of the Cherubim Chamer Choir Lage Artis conductor: Boris Abalyan Composed in 1986, Penderecki's "Song of Cherubim" for mixed a capella chorus SSAATTBB and lasting slightly over seven minutes in duration is a setting of an Orthodox liturgy hymn text. Like the at times spine-chilling Utrenia, this work also evokes feelings of the ancient church, a laudatory atmosphere with compressed intensity just below the surface. Sung in Church Slavonic, this hymn of praise by the cherubim (a class of angels ranking just below the seraphim) opens with a scale-wise theme in slow triplet meter, the first line interweaving beautifully and mysteriously with its imitation--"Let us the cherubim mystically repesenting." At the end of the phrase, the first voice sustains on a note making a centrally pitched drone for the second voice to work against. The tenor voices then state the melody again, underscored by low harmonic chanting in the basses--" ... and unto the life-giving Trinity and thrice-holy chant intoning." In gently rocking parallel harmonies, the upper voices join in against a sustained pedal point in the basses--" ... and now lay aside all earthly care." The singing is taken over by the idea of chant, and we hear the last lines in a style between the Orthodox Church chants and the Gabrieli opposed choir imitations. The harmonies begin to freely move about and the rhythm begins to ...

Don Cherry & Krzysztof Penderecki: Humus - The Life Exploring Force (edit)

This is an edited version of the first track off the album Actions made in 1971 by a group of musicians lead by Don Cherry and Kryzstof Penderecki. It's an awesome meeting of minds and sensibilities, producing some of the wildest, boldest music of the era. The orchestra included some of the best European free jazz musicians of the time (and all times) but music is a blend of influences and ideas, splicing together avant garde jazz, modern classical as well as traditional music. The CD version from 2002 is still available but in pretty limited numbers. Here's a BBC review: Actions was recorded live in 1971 at Donaueschingen and features the "New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra" (especially assembled for this project to perform under the direction of Krystzof Penderecki and Don Cherry). The Orchestra were a veritable who's who of the then emerging European Free Jazz scene; Peter Brotzmann, Willem Breuker, Paul Rutherford and Han Bennink, plus Terje Rypdal, Kenny Wheeler and Tomasz Stanko are all in evidence. These must have been very heady days indeed when 'serious composers' like Stockhausen and Penderecki could find a common ground with jazz players like those above. For whatever reasons the Classical composers were finding that their interests and working methods (structured improvisation, graphic scores, conduction and gesture as composition) were overlapping with like-minded musicians from an altogether different area, that of free jazz. Meanwhile Don Cherry had come out from ...

who shot the go-go dancer?

this is how it all started: it was the election-night again, and we've been listening to our favorite penderecki tune, just thinking about hiroshima and fashion and shit, on loop. all at once we took our masks and got out on the street, screaming and making faces, swearing and burning money, almost horny, low life. we just wanted to put a bomb in an art gallery, but we've got scared, so we ran ran ran, and we've almost killed some bicyclist near the danube river; oh, we were laughing like it was 9/11 all over again, so hard. didn't manage to sleep since, doomed forever. *Turn up volume at beginning. First two minutes are barely audible, but it works on a subliminal level. Have patience!* I put this together using all pictures I have taken or pics of myself that I have manipulated with various photo editing software. I seem to have an uncanny knack for creating creepy images (even when I'm not intending to), so I thought I would compile some of the better ones and put them to THE SINGLE CREEPIEST PIECE OF MUSICAL COMPOSITION EVER WRITTEN (for which Penderecki had an uncanny knack). Happy nightmares!

WARSAW BOYS CHOIR - Krzysztof Penderecki - St. Luke Passion

This was shot on 02.05.2009 at Canterbury Cathedral. It was the main event of the Warsaw Boys and Men's Choir tour over England. The NOSPR orchestra, the Katowice City Singers, Camerata Silesia and the Polish Radio Choir Krakow plus soloists with the reciter-evangelist Boris Carmeli . Conducted by maestro Krzysztof Penderecki. It was a part of the POLSKA! YEAR project. To listen to this masterpiece in this unique place was tearing our minds apart! Thanks to SoundsNew and IAM for making this event come true :-) However, this was the only performance of the Passion! The WBC had more concerts, but without these fabolous artists performing here :-) The Passion happened once only... But it will be never forgotten, I believe :-) I am sorry for the quality of the recording. More to come, yet already stabilized, from a video camera will follow. Now enjoy this short piece...

ECCO plays Penderecki's Sinfonietta for Strings (Vivace)

www.eastcoastchamberorchestra.com In 2001, a group of exciting young string players envisioned the creation of a conductor-less chamber orchestra, based upon democratic principles, whose focus is to be purely on music-making. This organic approach, passion, and commitment resulted in the creation of ECCO (short for East Coast Chamber Orchestra ). Its members are some of the most talented young chamber musicians, soloists (many of them making appearances with such orchestras as Chicago and Philadelphia), and principals in major American orchestras. Translating this diversity of experience and virtuosity into a unified ensemble approach, ECCO combines the strength and power of an orchestral ensemble with the personal, intimate nature of chamber music.
