I was the designated driver and was sober. We pulled into the 7-11 on Lamar & West 10th in Austin TX to get gas, and we saw ourselves near a car that was pulled over with two police cruisers behind it. A black woman was being given a field sobriety test in the cold. She seemed to be getting bossed around by the cops, and we both took notice. They had her doing the heel to toe test in high heels. In the passenger seat was a young Hispanic lady who appeared to be on her phone. She was doing nothing aggressive. As we finished pumping gas, a cop had gone over to the passenger side door and opened it. Soon after we heard a terrible scream and watched in horror as the very built cop started yanking this poor girl from the car. The other cop came up and joined in on the abuse. A battered woman lives under constant stress to say, or do, whatever will keep her safe. Since domestic violence is the single largest cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44, it is a serious public health issue. Abused women come from all economic, social and ethnic backgrounds. The abuse can be physical, emotional, or sexual. Four million women are assaulted yearly, by partners. Recognizing the signs of domestic abuse is key. Knowing the dynamics of battered woman's syndrome may help you understand why a battered woman delays seeking help. She may fear being killed, being left homeless, or becoming destitute. Her abuser may threaten harm to her children, other family, or pets. A battered woman is often isolated from family, friends and support and sustains a constant barrage of insults which convince her she is unworthy of a better life. Abusers often control a battered woman's money and transportation. Even if a battered wife is affluent and able to leave, she may fear her husband will use his money and connections to track her down. Domestic abuse is rarely a single episode and escalates over time, but a battered woman alone must decide to seek help. A battered woman is more at risk of being murdered when leaving an abuser. Simply telling a battered woman she doesn't deserve abuse can plant the seeds for a new life. Hearing you confirm she has the right to live violence-free and express her thoughts, feelings, and emotions, might be the first time a ...

If you think women are more at risk of domestic violence think again! Studies have shown women are more likely and more often guilty of starting violence in the relationship and as a result the man has to defend himself. Women are more likely to use weapons than a man is and a woman is more likely to inflict more severe wounds than a man. Studies have shown that women that are in an abusive relationship is far more likely and more often bring that violence into every other relationship there after. If you disagree then watch the video! The untold story of women who abuse men and how the news will not talk about it. Men are the victims of about 2.9 million intimate partner related physical assaults. • IPV resulted in 1544 deaths in 2004. From www.witness.org & SAF | The video chronicles the lives and injustices against the Akhdam women in Yemen. The 'Akhdam' , singular Khadem, meaning "servant" in Arabic, are a social group in Yemen, distinct from the majority by their darker skin and African descent. Although they are Arabic-speaking and practicing Muslims, they are regarded as non-Arabs and designated as a low caste group, frequently discriminated against and confined to unskilled and menial labor. In a society already riddled with patriarchy and poverty, the distain and discrimination against the Akhdam renders Akhdam women easy targets of violence and abuse. Akhdam women are subject to hate-based attacks and sexual assaults without any type of legal or social recourse. This video, produced by Sisters Arab Forum for Human Rights and WITNESS, features the stories and voices of three women, Haddah, Qobol, and Om Ali. Their stories of violence, injustice and forced poverty uncover the legacy of discrimination the Akhdam live with and the necessity of urgent action against these atrocities.

May 2003 Slovakia's Roma population has always had a difficult life. Regarded as culturally inferior, they are discriminated against at all levels. Now evidence suggests they are being sterilised against their will. Ingrid Ginova was just 16 when doctors sterilised her without her knowledge. When she publicised her plight, police threatened to imprison her. Her story gives added weight to a new report stating that Romany women have been sterilised for decades without their consent. The domestic violence industry debunked by Erin Pizzey: it's about money and Feminist control. An analysis of the most commonly cited statistic in the domestic violence roadshow: 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence in their lifetimes . Television personality, constitutional law expert and former Miss Thailand, Khun Areewan has always been a symbol of glamour and inspiration. And, as more people are finding out that she is also a victim of domestic violence, she has become a symbol of defiance and strength. From a young age I have been brought up in a structure of the Thai family where women arent equal to men, she said. My boyfriend wanted to get married. I introduced him to my parents. Thats when he started beating me. At that time I thought this was his way of loving me. For years, she accepted the abuse. Like many women in her situation, she made excuses for what was happening. But one day she found the courage to leave. I realized I was a victim of domestic violence. This was the starting point of my interest in women issues. As she recovered, she realized countless others had suffered as she had. At that moment, she decided to tell her story publicly. Governments, political parties, women groups, magazines, television shows - anywhere she could tell her story, she would. Her activism and voice formed part of a groundswell of support that led to Thailands first ever law regarding victims of domestic violence. Domestic Violence is now a crime. Women who suffer from it can take their abusers to court. For the past three years, the United Nations Development program along with other UN agencies, is working with the Royal Thai Government to implement the act effectively. This includes establishing a ...

I haven't done a video in a while so I thought I'd phone one on in and release this interesting monologue from shock jock Tom Leykis. Some are going to complain but I don't relate to most of what Tom says. Occasionally he has an interesting topic like this. I agree with a lot of what Tom has to say here, there is a limit of how much a person can be completely absolved from a situation. But to even voice thoughts of this kind is called "blaming the victim". Sometimes the victim deserves a portion of the blame. That is reality. Say I was murdered for walking the docks at night. The person who murdered me should be caught and held to account for the crime. But I played a part in the fate that befell me. The same way that a person accepts the chances of cancer if they were to smoke. Don't cry afterwards because you decided to smoke and then got cancer. A person who has committed domestic violence has committed violence -- that is illegal. In caring societies we should have laws against violence, and we do. In the past much of DV was ignored and the feminists changed attitude. We should also help people who have nowhere to go, like a housewife with no job skills. We should help people but we should not capitulate to their helplessness. De-politicise DV, and realise that like all crimes, you cannot completely stamp it out. A lot of it stems from a state of mind. I am not a fan of MRA's becoming victim mongerers. But I have two problems with DV as it stands in the modern ...

On March 14, 1993, CBS aired "Men Don't Tell," a TV movie about domestic violence starring Peter Strauss and Judith Light. The twist: Strauss's character, construction executive Ed MacAffrey, was abused by his wife Laura, played by Light. Based on a true story, it dramatizes the story of a loving husband, who is terrorized by the violent behavior of his wife. He had long endured the physical and emotional abuse heaped upon him by his neurotic wife. He tolerates this not only because he loves her and is concerned over the welfare of his daughter, but also because men are traditionally regarded as weaklings if they allow themselves to be battered by their wives. After one of Laura's destructive tantrums brings the attention of the police, Ed is suspected of being the aggressor! Finally, Laura goes too far and Ed tries to defend himself--whereupon Laura crashes through the front window of her home and is rendered comatose. Ed is arrested for Domestic Violence and Attempted Murder. As he is interrogated, he tells his story of years of abuse, and how he even once sought help by calling a domestic violence hotline, only to get scorned and hung up on. This interrogation takes all night, by highly skeptical police. While this is going on, his children have been taken to their paternal grandfather, himself a retired police officer, to spend the night. In the morning, young daughter, who chose to remain silent through the years of abuse due to the humiliation and shame, asked the ...

Hello, I am the woman in this YouTube, seen protesting Rice from the audience. That day there was a whole group of us together: World Can't Wait, Stanford Says No To War, Code Pink. I am with World Can't Wait. The war criminals want a safe return to legitimacy, only public protest and rejection disrupts that. All of us were demanding to speak the truth about Rice as a war criminal (and the torture program was only one facet of her crimes). It is heartening to read so many comments of support, and if you'd like to talk more, please write me at sf@worldcantwait.org or check out www.worldcantwait.org I also want to comment back about some of the comments: First: Rice should be protested because of her war crimes and crimes against humanity --NOT for being a woman, or African-American. To writers of comments using ugly, racist and/or woman hating names against Rice -- and also to everyone else reading them: I ask you to think: Isn't hatred against Black people and women exactly the type of "thinking" that actually supports, and feeds, the existing power system -- which creates the wars for empire, and imperialist war criminals, that we oppose? Second: World Can't Wait's mission is to build and strengthen mass political resistance and opposition by people living in the US to the crimes of our own government. In politically confronting war criminals, World Can't Wait believes in, and acts on, the power of doing this through speech, only. Speech -- yelled aloud in the streets ...

In celebration of March's Women's History Month, Canadian hip-hop recording artist Eternia examines the prevalence of violence against women in Canada and around the world. Eternia is drawing from the third single "Love" released from her Juno-nominated album "It?s Called Life" to raise awareness for Amnesty International's campaign to Stop Violence Against Women. This sensitive and critical issue is portrayed through the music video for "Love," which features guest vocals of Eternia?s sister ? Jessica Kaya, and which is slated for release in Canada, Australia and select US markets throughout March 2006. "In their lifetime, more than one in three women around the world report being abused or suffer from other forms of violence," explains Eternia. "Love" is the most personal and meaningful song I have ever created; it illustrates the struggles of physical and emotional abuse my mother suffered at the hands of my father, while having to raise us. Many women endure abusive relationships, thinking that is the only way to survive and raise their children. "Love" is my way of expressing a mothers' ultimate sacrifice for her children." Non-profit organization The 411 Initiative For Change (411), uses musicians as the media to engage and educate young people on pressing social issues. 411 facilitated this collaboration between Eternia and Amnesty International. Over 100000 people use opium in Afghanistan. How many are addicted to heroin? Should opium be used as medicine to calm children? Today, illegal processing in Afghanistan has made drugs cheaper and more available within the country... The result is that increasingly Afghans themselves are succumbing to the dangers of the country's largest cash crop. A recent United Nations survey puts the number of heroin addicts throughout the country at 50000. That's in addition to 150000 people who use opium. Poverty and unemployment are two causes of drug abuse. But in Afghanistan, there's another reason: Antonio Maria Costa: '...during the past quarter century, so many conflicts -- against the Soviets, against one another, the mujahadin, the Civil War period, the Taliban rules, the fight against the Taliban, all of this has created a context whereby people, especially internally displaced people, especially refugees, finding themselves in dire conditions, so some of them started to use opium as a way of just forgetting the daily chores, and the daily difficulties and the tragedies in life President Karzai: '...drug addiction unfortunately has come to Afghanistan, mainly as consequence of being refugees in our neighboring countries. It ruins families, its something that worries me a lot its something that we have not yet has done much unfortunately.' She explains the military's systematic training to abuse and accept abuse, the programmatic decreasing of self-awareness that constitutes perhaps the most important part of basic training in which malleable youths are indoctrinated to think of themselves as expendable. They're also taught, she reveals (or reminds us) to have contempt for civilians, those people who fail to understand the sacrifices being made on their behalf. Mackey also touches on the CIA's Paperclip Project which secreted some 1600 World War II Nazi scientists and eugenicists into key positions in the military, universities and weapons development (nuclear, chemical biological, mind control). If you are a woman in an abusive relationship, seek help and get out. If you are being beaten, please call the authorities. If you are a child, talk to someone... please. NOBODY deserves to feel the pains of abuse. And NOBODY (including men) should have their gender, race, culture or religion used as a stereotype or symbol of abusive. That is prejudice, sexist, racist and wrong. "Men" are not the enemy, people, regardless of race and gender who are abusive are.
