Yoko Ono "Cut Piece" Performance Art

This video is solely for academic assessment purposes - specifically Monash University's JRN2201 Online Journalism unit, Semester 1 (2010). I put together this video by combining original interview material with non-original footage of Yoko Ono's iconic "Cut Piece" performance art and non-original music (all of which have been credited within the video). The performance took place at Carnegie Hall in 1965. To view the full original video of the performance, please visit the YouTube page that I downloaded the clips from: www.youtube.com

Performance Art - Haircut

This was a performance art piece I did for an assignment with the objective of creating a spectacle. I did this in Pioneer Square in Portland, right across from the Nordstrom. I didn't get it all shaved off but since I only had a beard trimmer I think I got pretty far. EDIT 12/20/07: Wow I've had a lot of attention from this piece. I thought I would supply a bit more information since I've had a lot of questions come in about it. To clarify the project, this was an assignment for an alternative art class I was taking. It was the first in a series of performance projects we had to complete. I suspect the idea of creating a spectacle is the easiest and hardest thing to do for someone who is not a performer, which I am not. Because it was a test, I tried to think of the most uncomfortable thing I could do in public, and save for standing around naked, this was what I came up with. I think the idea of a spectacle as art is that even if it has no message, it breaks up the daily routines of other people. To paraphrase the artist David Eckard, the most exciting thing about performance art is thinking about what gets said at the dinner table by those who saw it. What people were saying... *The couple in black asked me if I was supporting a cause, and wanted to know what it was. When I told them there was no reason they said they would stand with me if I had. *The woman walking by at 2:58 complimented me on my skirt. *The young man who approaches me on the left asked me if I was ...

Performance Art - Plastic Fruit for Hungry Mouths

An original performance art piece by Michael Frederick Ahmad Anne Slagill News Editor The passing of Proposition 8 has inspired protests throughout San Diego, including one this past weekend that attracted an estimated 25000 participants. While some activists marched en masse, junior Michael Ahmad chose to lock himself in a cage. His artistic demonstration, which he titled Plastic Fruit for Hungry Mouths, drew a crowd outside of the USD University Center during dead hours last Thursday. Ahmad sat unspeaking in a metal dog cage that was lined with newspapers. A sign attached to the cage read, Do not feed the homosexuals. Three paper grocery bags placed just out of his reach were filled with plastic fruit and labeled Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness. Some onlookers found the demonstration laughable. I think this is weird and unnecessary, Joey Bailey, a sophomore, said. Others, including Professor Evelyn Diaz-Cruz of the Theater Department, saw it as a poignant example of performance protest. This is heartbreaking. Its humiliating and he puts it right in our face so that we can see how we treat members of our society like animals, Diaz-Cruz said. During his performance, Ahmad shook the cage and signed desperately for food. Many were startled and responded by snapping photos with their cell phones. Others attempted to feed him with plastic fruit from the paper bags. This would not suffice, and he shook his head in disappointment. Ahmad explained the symbolism in an ...

Fluxus/Performance Art: Do Geese See God?

Fluxus—a name taken from a Latin word meaning "to flow"—is an international network of artists, composers and designers noted for blending different artistic media and disciplines in the 1960s. They have been active in Neo-Dada noise music and visual art as well as literature, urban planning, architecture, and design. Performance art is art in which the actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time constitute the work. It can happen anywhere, at any time, or for any length of time. Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body and a relationship between performer and audience. This video is part of the "Palette" project and pays homage to Fluxus.Performance Art. Video by Mark Garvey, song "Do Geese See God?" by Bill Hooper. ART IS COMMUNICATION Panel Discussion

James Kalm adopts his art historian hat to bring viewers this documentation. On the evening of October 23, 2008 a panel discussion ART IS COMMUNICATION IT IS THE ABILITY TO MANIPULATE PEOPLE was held at the Art Directors Club on West 29th Street in Manhattan. The panel was moderated by journalist Gabriel Sherman and included: Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator of the Department of Media at the Museum of Modern Art, and Chief Curatorial Advisor at PS1; Anne Pasternak, President and Artistic Director of Creative Time; Lauren Cornell, Executive Director of Rhizome and Adjunct Curator at the New Museum; and Mario Naves, artist, critic and writer for The New York Observer. This video is excerpts from that discussion. Because cameras and recordings were forbidden, the framing and sound quality are less than optimal.

Stelarc - The Body is Obsolete - Contemporary Arts Media

Screener for Stelarc - The Body is Obsolete distributed online worldwide by Contemporary Arts Media: www.artfilms.com.au Code: KD-Stel DVD & CD-ROM. Stelarc is an Australian artist who has performed extensively in Japan, Europe and the USA - including new music, dance festivals and experimental theatre. He has used medical instruments, prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems and the Internet to explore alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body. The DVD and accompanying CD-ROM feature an interview with Stelarc as well as descriptions and images of all his major artworks. He has acoustically and visually probed the body-having amplified brainwaves, blood-flow and muscle signals and filmed the inside of his lungs, stomach and colon, approximately two metres of internal space. He has done twenty-five body SUSPENSIONS with insertions into the skin, in different positions and varying situations in remote locations. He has performed with a THIRD HAND, a VIRTUAL ARM, a VIRTUAL BODY and a STOMACH SCULPTURE. For FRACTAL FLESH, as part of Telepolis, he developed a touch-screen interfaced Muscle Stimulation System, enabling remote access, actuation and choreography of the body. Performances such as PING BODY and PARASITE probe notions of telematic scaling and the engineering of external, extended and virtual nervous systems for the body using the Internet. In 1998 for Kampnagel, he completed EXOSKELETON - a pneumatically powered 6-legged walking machine ...
