Stupid Perl Trick
This is a stupid little Perl trick that corrupts a file by performing a pattern substitution throughout the file. The example file is an image file. The following can be entered at a command prompt to corrupt a file: perl -pi -e 's/c/salami/g' file.jpg This is a really simple little trick that anyone can try as long as they have Perl loaded on their computer. Perl comes standard with most flavors of Linux and with Mac OS X. While this trick as demonstrated in this video is kind of just a funny gimmick, command line substitution is a powerful tool, especially when combined with the use of regular expressions. Perl 5.10, CPAN as Root, Intro on Ubuntu Desktop 9.04
Ubuntu Desktop 9.04 comes with Perl 5.10, a fairly new version of Perl. Note that our Ubuntu Server version 8.04.3 comes with Perl 5.08. On this Desktop machine, we are about to do a large number of module installations using CPAN, including a multitude of pre-requisites to support those modules. This will greatly enhance the already considerable set of Core Modules which come with Perl. We will be adding modules related to the Web, Email, HTTP, SMTP, XML, MySQL and much much more. An important thing to note in this pre-installation introduction, is that we will be doing all of our installations using CPAN as the ROOT user. Of course there are many production deployment scenarios in which you want to or are required to use a non-root application-dedicated user to run your Perl code and also your very Perl installation and all of your Perl modules. In order to do this you need to install Perl and use CPAN to install Perl modules into a non-standard location. Non-standard meaning locations other than those used by the original Perl installation which came with your OS and lives under root privileges. This probably means you will want to use the LIB and/or PREFIX parameters with CPAN to specify non-standard locations. * The problem with this is that not all modules have installation facilities which properly honor these parameters when you set them. Construder - Short Demo of the Game World
This is a more or less short demo of the gameplay and world of "Construder", a game I recently started to program which is now mostly done. This Video shows a more or less recent revision of the game world. The technology and core world mechanics were inspired by Minecraft, but Construder is a very different game in many aspects.
