Stephen Fry attacks media coverage of Peter Cook's death

Following the media coverage of Peter Cook's death in January 1995, Stephen Fry felt compelled to defend Cook and his achievements from criticism about his 'failure' to fulfil his potential. (As Jonathan Ross said shortly afterwards: "of course he fulfilled his youthful potential - he fulfilled it when he was still young".) This was broadcast about 36 hours after Cook's death.

Peter Cook: "Lord Stockton: A Life" + Twisted Sister (1986)

In this "Saturday Live" sketch Peter Cook plays an old Conservative from the House of Lords, interviewed by John Bird in the autumn of his years. ("Nearly dead, yes.") Although not named directly, "Lord Stockton" was the former UK Prime Minister Harold MacMillan ( tinyurl.com ), which explains the "Macmillan Publishing" in-joke. And he was indeed "nearly dead", dying (at the ripe old age of 92) not long after this program was broadcast, although the two events are presumably unconnected. When MacMillan was Prime Minister, he became the first UK head of government to be impersonated in a satirical show. Indeed he turned up at a performance of the show, "Beyond the Fringe", specifically to see himself impersonated. The person doing this ground-breaking impersonation? Peter Cook. ( tinyurl.com ) This sketch links directly into a live performance of "I am, I'm Me" performed by Twisted Sister. (NB This performance is actually from later in the show. The actual performance Cook linked into was a pisspoor cover of "Leader of the Pack". This performance was much better though. :) ) 80s POP CULTURE REFERENCES: * 4 million unemployed!! * Thatcher * Sunday Trading laws

Peter Cook & Dudley Moore - 'The Frog and Peach'

Peter Cook & Dudley Moore's 'The Frog and Peach' is an old school british silly comedy bit. Oldre versions are already posted on YouTube but this one is my favourite version. This bit works much better when they were older. It's slower and sillyer... It was a part of Amnesty International's 'The Secret Policeman's Ball' filmed in 1989, and also starring John Cleese, Fry & Laurie, French & Saunders, Robbie Coltrane and many more...

Peter Cook: "James Last's Britain" (1986)

The late Peter Cook in a surreal parody of a series of programmes made the famous German band leader James Last. ( gfablog.blogspot.com ) This spot was from Peter Cook's appearance on "Saturday Live" as guest presenter. (During it's first year, "Saturday Live" was 90 mins long and had a different guest host week. By it's second year, one of the regular performers, Ben Elton, had taken over as full-time host.) It was actually quite unusual for the guest presenter on "Saturday Live" to have their own film insert as they usually performed live for a bit before presenting the next performer, and indeed Peter Cook didn't actually do much *presenting* on "Saturday Live", usually linking between guests and even bands with a sketch. This film insert is actually a rarity for "Saturday Live" as well as for Peter Cook. 80s POP CULTURE REFERENCES: * Princess Michael of Kent ( tinyurl.com ) * Gatwick ( tinyurl.com )

'One Leg Too Few' (1989) - Peter Cook and Dudley Moore

From 'The Secret Policeman's Biggest Ball' in 1989. The Tarzan sketch is followed by the Moore/Cook song 'Goodbye', performed by them and the rest of the cast. Surely this was the last time they performed both the sketch and the song together? If anyone knows differently, please post a comment or send a message. 'The Frog and Peach' from the same concert has already been uploaded on another channel.
