The revue was meant to be a tribute given to two great theatre stars of interwar Poland: Maria Malicka and Zbyszko Sawan. The poor drooping temples are just a little sample taken from the whole cavalcade of tears, white palms, despairs etc. Włast, who was able to write excellent texts like Ach te Cyganki, Tango Andrusowskie and dozens of others, had similar abilities in turning himself into a real monster of Polish songtext-graphomania. Unforunately, such Dr Jekyll/ Mr Hyde ambiguous role was often played also by the finest poets who earned their living in the revue theatres. In the files of Julian Tuwim - one of the classics of Polish XXth century poetry - can be found, along with sophisticated, poetical songs, also terrible melodramatic texts, obviously written in a hurry and merely for commercial reasons. Diese Aufnahme entstand 1931 in Warschau. Das Odeon-Orchester unter Leitung von Arthur Gold und Jerzy Petersburski spielt Ernesto Lecuona's populären Rumba "Siboney". Den Refrain singt Mieczyslaw Fogg, Bariton beim Chor Dana. Die Rückseite "Fiesta" hatte ich schon vor langer Zeit veröffentlicht, doch leider musste ich die jetzt vorgestellte Seite zuerst reparieren, da ein Randausbruch über ca. 15 Rillen die Seite vollkommen ruiniert hat. Die Beschädigung ist jetzt fixiert und spielt auch ohne Probleme durch, ich bitte aber das Störgeräusch am Anfang des Stückes zu entschuldigen. Die Platte ist so schön und selten, dass man sie auch in dem Zustand veröffentlichen muss.

Ja, für alle, die es noch nicht wussten - dieser weltberühmte Tango stammt aus der Feder eines Polen. Jerzy Petersburski schrieb den "Tango Milonga" 1929 für die Revue "Warszawa w kwiatach" und landete mit dieser unscheinbaren Melodie einen Welthit, der bis heute als Tango "O Donna Clara" bekannt ist. Ein ähnlicher, aber eher kurz andauernder Erfolg gelang ihm ein Jahr später nochmal mit dem Tango "Zegnaj", der in Deutschland unter dem Titel "Mara" bekannt war. Die vorliegende Aufnahme kann wohl als eine der ersten und authentischten Aufnahmen des Liedes gewertet werden. Henryk Gold war Petersburskis Cousin und nahm mit seinem in Polen äußerst populären Tanz-Orchester das Lied 1929 auf. Ich freue mich endlich, Ihnen diese schöne Aufnahme zur Verfügung stellen zu können. Ich habe sie zwar schon lange in der Sammlung, aber die erste Schallplatte, die ich vor Jahren gefunden hatte, ist in einem so erbärmlichen Zustand, dass ich mich gehütet habe, sie zu veröffentlichen. Henryk Gold's Orchestra, voc. Władysław Ochrymowicz - Nie bój się mamy (Bo mama też nie była święta) (Don't Be Afraid Of Mom - For Mom Wasn't Holy Too), Syrena 1927 (accoustic recording) NOTE: Henryk Gold's Orchestra was a real pride of Polish prewar jazz scene. From the early 1920s his, and his brother, Arthur's - together with Jerzy Petersburski - orchestra, was at first just a social evenement, to become soon an artistical - and commercial - sensation. A lot has been written and uploaded in You Tube about that outstanding musician so, I simply encourage everyone to browse a little in YT and find still more and more facts from that fascinating Jewish-Polish biography, as well as more and more fantastic music played by his orchestra. A few words have to be saved for the singer, Władysław Ochrymowicz (born 1887 in Sanok, Polish Galizia). He was rather an operatc baritone - the fact not obstructing him from recording in 1920s really hundreds of refrains for Syrena, with the most popular jazz and dance orchestras in Warsaw. Before the outbreak of WW II he fortunately was on his way to the US. During the war he run, together with his wife, Polish section of the WNBX broadcast in New York City. In 1963 he returned to Poland to die in Wroclaw, a few months later.

The print of the Polish sheet music from 1936 (year of composing), being in my possession, is denoted as '8th edition' ! With passing years, the legend of the 'suicide Hungarian song' began slowly affect -- unjustly -- history of our tango. Polish "This Is Our Last Sunday" is about parting with the beloved person who "is a winner in that game" and is going to have -- from that moment on -- happy and bright days. Here's a part of my item about Henryk Gold, written for NFO.NET (Big Bands Database): Henryk Gold was a pioneer in the history of Polish jazz and dance music. He was born in 1899 in Warsaw into a very musical family in which all of the children were encouraged to play various instruments. His mother came from the famous Warsaw klezmer family Melodysta, and his father was one of the first flutist in the Warsaw Opera Orchestra. His brother, Artur Gold (1903-1943), was also an orchestra leader and composer of note, writing many of the tangos that were popular during the 1920s and 30s. During the period immediately after WW1 when Poland again became independent, Jazz, as popularized by the 'Original Dixieland Jazz Band', began to sweep Europe from west to east. Henryk Gold was caught up in the extreme popularity of this music and followed the lead of Zygmunt Karasinski, a saxophonist, who (together with Szymon Kataszek) founded the very first Polish jazz band in 1923 („Karasinski & Kataszek Jazz- Tango Orchestra"). In 1925, Henryk and his brother Artur formed an 8-piece Jazz Band to play at the Cafe Bodega in Warsaw. They were an immediate success, and this lead to a recording contract with the SYRENA company. "Do you remember those Summers at the South ? A coast of the Black Sea - and our first randez-vous...?" I was so happy to have received this recording from my Russian-American friend...- It brought memories: coast of the Black Sea -- Yalta, Gurzuff, Livadia, places where I once wandered and tried to search for the traces of my grandparents who had lived there -- for years...- Some of them were found. Polish tango about 'the last Sunday' became an immediate and enormous success in Soviet Russia -- (within that most 'troubled' political period) . Russians created as many as three separate versions of this hit; none of them, however, had any reference to the day of Sunday. One, very popular, "Utomlonnoje solntse" (The sun is tired -- as Shura once described it) was already presented at YT (by 240252). I want to invite my guests to the interpretation of the most popular Soviet-Russian singer of the period: Klavdia Shulzhenko, with piano only, title "Song about the South", recorded in 1938.
