John Adams - Grand Pianola Music

This is obviously not my piece or my performance, but I just have to share this really beautiful music. I couldn't fit in the first movement, because it's longer than 10 minutes, but the first movement is just as pretty as this (different mood though). I hope you enjoy this.

Igor Strawinsky - Étude pour Pianola

Original Compositions for Player Piano between 1915 and 1930. In this period composers discovered the superhuman possibilities of the Player Piano. Strawinsky, Hindemith, Toch, Antheil, Münch, Haass and Casella used this new medium, decades before Conlon Nancarrow discovered it again for his ingenious Studies for Player Piano. This clip was recorded by a finely restored Bösendorfer Ampico Grand. See www.playerpianokonzerte.de and www.nancarrow.de

Citymusic "Stadsmuziek" Akko Goldenbeld

Concept and design by Akko Goldenbeld "The tall buildings in the city centre have a heavy touch; the low-rise villas to the South create considerably gentler sounds. Akko Goldenbeld has a very personal way of looking at, or rather listening to the city. He has created a scale model of Eindhoven and assigned it the role of sound recorder; the buildings create a score. Placed on a revolving wooden cylinder the buildings set little hammers in motion that play the keys of a piano. And turning and turning, the city makes its voice heard: from loud to soft, long to short, high-pitched to low, traslating the urban developers'three dimensional reality into an aural experience. Stadsmuziek (City Music) makes you tune in to the ensemble-playing that is environemental planning."

If you have any song or lesson requests, post them!*** Just messin around .. the credit goes to user cutiemish .. i learned it by watching her video lol *Many people have commented about music lessons for songs such as Tetris. I'm in the process of creating some piano lessons and putting them on youtube and my new website. I've been playing piano since I was in elementary .. but never took formal lessons. Thanks so much for everyone's comments! I never thought making a keyboard video of Tetris would gain so much attention. Tetris was always a favourite game of mine as a kid. I had the Tetris Gameboy game, Tetris Nintendo game and played Tetris at the arcade whenever I got a chance. I had a Tetris video up when I first created my account of playing the nintendo game but I took it down. Grand Pianola & Wurlitzer : Adam Ramet & Len Rawle

Grand Pianola & Wurlitzer : Adam Ramet & Len Rawle play "Varsity Drag" at St Albans Organ Theatre May 2008. FULL VERSION. Here is the drag, see how it goes, Down on the heels, up on the toes, That's the way to do the Varsity Drag, Hotter than hot, newer than new, Meaner than mean, bluer than blue, Gets as much applause as waving the flag! You can pass many a class, Whether you're dumb or wise, If you'll all answer the call when your professor cries: "Everybody down on the heels, up on the toes, Stay after school and learn how it goes, Everybody do the Varsity Drag!" We've always thought Knowledge is naught, We should be taught to dance, Right here at Tate We're up to date, We teach a great new dance. Don't think that I brag, I speak of the drag. Why should a sheikh Learn how to speak Latin and Greek badly? Give him a neat Motto complete Say it with feet gladly! First lesson right now, You'll love it and how you'll love it: Here is the drag, see how it goes, Down on the heels, up on the toes, That's the way to do the Varsity Drag, Hotter than hot, newer than new, Meaner than mean, bluer than blue, Gets as much applause as waving the flag! 1950 Aeolian-American PIANOLA keytop piano player

Developed by the brilliant Engineering Old Timers at the East Rochester NY and Pratt-Reed Connecticut factories post-war during 1947 thru '49, this pneumatically operated all metal, wood & rubber - ie: no plastics - portable paper roll player device debuted in 1950 to catch the wave of folks building new homes who had the new style lowboy spinet pianos for their living or basement rec rooms. However, due to unforeseen internal Company circumstances less than 50 of these marvelous machines were ever produced for sale. Originally conceived to employ a modified Ampico B reproducing system under the left cover (I have the original testbed prototype) the 50 were quickly assembled with an 88 note trackerbar (no sustain pedal control provided) and sent out the door to be forgotten in the fog of Days Gone By. I have tubed up the sustain nipple to a microswitch to trigger the digital piano's sustain. The surprisingly quiet highspeed agricultural vacuum pump is housed in it's own separate 65 lb 'sewing machine' sized cabinet seen below the piano. The next appearance of a key top piano player was the Dynavoice Jet Age plastic machines 10 years later in 1960.

My pianola playing Chiquitita by Abba

This is my Steck Aeolian Pianola, which I bought about four months ago. It's taken a lot of work to get it to play, including replacing the cloths on 65 sets of bellows, and replacing all the tubing. There's still more to do, such as the tempo regulator and some slack in the bearings on the pedals, so please excuse the rogue sounds of pedals being worked! But thanks to the effort so far, it's playing relatively well - and it keeps me happy - and entertains my friends! I hope you enjoy it.

Push-Up Pianola: Marriage of Figaro - Mozart

What we have here is a 1907 Wilcox & White 'Angelus' push-up Pianola playing onto a Casio WK-500 keyboard (set to 'ORCHESTRAL STRINGS'). For years I've wanted to play with this idea and now I finally can. I purchased this from the estate of Charles B. Brown of Pittsburgh, PA - owner/founder of the Bayernhof Music Museum. The Pianola is surprisingly fully-loaded. It's in a beautiful walnut case, a 58/65-note combo, has the Melodant accenting system (W&W's version of 'Themodist'), AND a full rank of organ reeds (tuned to 435). I can make lots of sound with this little thing. It's sort of my inverse answer to someone installing a Pianomation system into an old upright piano. The roll is actually an Aeolian Grand 58-note organ roll installed backwards in the spoolbox. No modifications have been done (like flipping the paper on its spool), I've merely put it in as if it were a regular 'top-to-bottom' setup and adjusted the manual tracking so that the holes line up (less than one note off). I have to rewind it by hand though since the drive side of the roll is on the opposite side. A minimal bit to deal with, but it does allow me to play my Aeolian rolls of which there are several great titles. I've also found a few makes of 65-note rolls that luckily are made under-spec enough for me to 'flip' them on their spools and play reliably on this machine. Angelus' measurements were just a little off from the more standardized 65-note rolls in that their paper was a bit narrower, and ...

Cyril Scott : Lotus Land played by Percy Grainger : Pianola Institute

CYRIL SCOTT: Lotus Land, recorded for the Duo-Art Pianola Piano by Percy Grainger at Aeolian Hall in New York City, published as roll no. 7127 in March 1928, and played back in May 2009 on a Hamburg Steinway Duo-Art grand, no. 241071, in London, England. Lotus Land is heavy with the scent of opium, every forward surge of the music sinking back into the mists of lethargy and forgetfulness. Grainger and Scott were good friends, so perhaps their acquaintance helped Grainger to this particularly sensitive performance. Audio recording copyright 2009 by the Pianola Institute. Photo depicts Percy Grainger and W. Creary Woods, one of the Duo-Art recording producers for the Aeolian Company in New York, in the roll editing suite at Aeolian Hall in West 42nd Street, with its tell-tale cane chairs. Percy Grainger is a favourite of ours, ever since we re-introduced him to the concert platform in 1972, 11 years after he had joined the immortals. He recently recorded the Grieg Piano Concerto by means of his Duo-Art rolls, with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Rolf Gupta. The CD is due to be released in August 2009, and the recording company website at www.2L.no has more details. Player pianos can be very fine musical instruments. Edward Macdowell : Sea Pieces, Op. 55 played by Herbert Fryer : Pianola Institute

MACDOWELL: Sea Pieces, Op. 55, Song, and AD 1620, recorded for the Welte-Mignon reproducing piano by Herbert Fryer at Steinway Hall in London in March 1909, published on rolls nos. 1575 and 1574, and played back in May 2009 on a Hamburg Steinway Welte grand, no. 209642, in London, England. Audio recording copyright 2009 by the Pianola Institute. Photos from "Edward Macdowell" by Lawrence Gilman, in the series, "Living Masters of Music", published in 1906 by John Lane, The Bodley Head, and from the Aeolian Company 1927 Duo-Art Catalogue. These two Sea Pieces (and there are two more on the same Welte rolls) are probably the earliest piano recordings of Macdowell's music that can be played back in something approaching hi-fi. On the day of uploading, they are one hundred years and 83 days old, and they sound remarkably natural. Herbert Fryer (1877-1957) studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music in London, and went on to have lessons with Ferruccio Busoni in Weimar. Although he is not as well-remembered as some other pianists, his international career was extensive and long-lasting. Like the Horowitz/Rachmaninov roll that is also amongst our videos, Fryer's performances have an intimate quality, which in this case especially suits the reflective nature of Macdowell's music. Given the "special relationship" that is loudly quoted as existing between the two English-speaking communities on opposite sides of the Big Pond, these rolls are a reminder that not ...

This song was written and recorded in 1929. The roll is from the Aeolian Co. London England. This Pianola is a STECK - Aeolian with a half Duo - Art player action that left the factory in London February 14, 1928 as dated by the final inspection tag. The Pianola action has been rebuilt by Ed Smith and an electric pump installed so now you can play it with the original foot pedals or play it with the new electric pump. Ed Smith did all the rebuilding of the Pianola action approximately 200 hours as a donation to the Kosice Technical Museum along with an additional 850. Euros in parts and transportation. This Pianola will be on pernament display at the Technical Museum in Kosice, Slovakia. I would like to thank Patricia Lines from Puttenham, UK for here generous Pianola gift.
