The Piasecki PA-97 Helistat was an American experimental heavy-lift aircraft, built by Piasecki by fastening four obsolete helicopters to a framework beneath a helium blimp. The PA-97 was built under a 1980 US Navy contract for the Forest Service to demonstrate a heavy vertical air lifter for harvesting timber from inaccessible terrain. The single demonstrator used a Navy ZPG-2W blimp and four H-34J helicopters. The combination of a large blimp with powered lift made the 343 feet (104.57 m) long helistat the largest dynamic lift aircraft in the world.

To meet the US Army's requirement, Piasecki's design featured two tandem, three-blade ducted rotors, with the crew of two seated between the two rotors. Power was by two 180 hp (134 kW) Lycoming O-360-A2A piston engines, driving the rotors by a central gearbox. The first of two aircraft ordered by the Army, initially designated the Model 59K Skycar (and later renamed Airgeep) by Piasecki, and designated VZ-8P by the Army flew on 22 September 1958. It was re-engined with a single 425 shp (317 kW) Turbomeca Artouste turboshaft replacing the two piston engines, flying in this form in June 1959. After being loaned to the US Navy for evaluation as the Model 59N (where it was fitted with floats, it was returned to the Army and its engine replaced by a lighter and more powerful (550 shp (410 kW)) Garrett AiResearch TPE331-6 engine. The second prototype was completed to a modified design, designated Model 59H Airgeep II by Piasecki and VZ-8P (B) It was powered by two Artouste engines, with ejection seats for the pilot and co-pilot/gunner and a further three seats for passengers. It was also fitted with a powered tricycle undercarriage to increase mobility on land. The Airgeep IIs first flight occurred on 15 February 1962 piloted by "Tommy" Atkins. While the Airgeep would normally operate close to the ground, it was capable of flying to several thousand feet, proving to be stable in flight. The company changed its name in the 1956 to Vertol Aircraft Corporation and subsequently was bought by Boeing Aircraft Company in 1960, and became Boeing-Vertol.

GREGORY SCOTT PIASECKI Gregory Scott Piasecki passed away on April 6, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 42. Born on Feb. 4, 1968 in Hammond, IN, Greg grew up in Rochester, MI. A graduate of Oakland University, he worked at the Palace of Auburn Hills for over 19 years, and also the Meadow Brook Theatre as a Production Manager and carpenter. Greg was the President of Oakland County NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). Greg established the chapter and was able to successfully run one of the most active NORML chapters in the State of Michigan. He was the 2009 Michigan NORML Director of the Year. Greg always had a kind word to say and very rarely met anyone that he did not like. He found pleasure from helping others, and even during his illness, remained upbeat. He always exhibited a quiet decency and had a smile for strangers and friends alike. His kind spirit will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his wife Mary Pat Clark; parents Bernard and JoAnne Piasecki of Holly; brothers, Bryan (Allison) Piasecki; Jeff (Hollie Bracken) Piasecki; nephew Jonathan; and nieces Hannah and Maezhen; good friend Lynn Granville.
