Paul McCarthy: "Piccadilly Circus" | Art21 "Exclusive"

Episode #083: Artist Paul McCarthy describes the improvisational process and performances behind the video work "Piccadilly Circus" (2003). Filmed at an unoccupied London bank before being renovated by Hauser & Wirth gallery in 2002, and shot several months before the start of the Iraq War, the work features costumed players in the roles of President George W. Bush, Osama Bin Laden, and the Queen Mum (in three versions). Paul McCarthy's video-taped performances and provocative multimedia installations lampoon polite society, ridicule authority, and bombard the viewer with a sensory overload of often sexually-tinged, violent imagery. With irreverent wit, McCarthy often takes aim at cherished American myths and icons—Walt Disney, the Western, and even the Modern Artist—adding a touch of malice to subjects that have been traditionally revered for their innocence or purity. Whether conflating real-world political figures with fantastical characters such as Santa Claus, or treating erotic and abject content with frivolity and charm, McCarthy's work confuses codes, mixes high and low culture, and provokes an analysis of fundamental beliefs. Learn more about Paul McCarthy: www.art21.org VIDEO | Producer: Wesley Miller & Nick Ravich. Interview: Susan Sollins. Camera: Bob Elfstrom. Sound: Doug Dunderdale. Editor: Lizzie Donahue & Paulo Padilha. Artwork Courtesy: Paul McCarthy.

London - Piccadilly Circus

London's Piccadilly Circus. (2008) Wiki - en.wikipedia.org Map - goo.gl Made with Sony HDR-SR12E Photos on ‪www.jurajmitas.com Piccadilly Circus is a famous road junction and public space of London's West End in the City of Westminster, built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly. In this context, a circus, from the Latin word meaning "circle", is a round open space at a street junction. Coordinates 51°30′36″N 0°8′4″W Piccadilly now links directly to the theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue, as well as the Haymarket, Coventry Street (onwards to Leicester Square), and Glasshouse Street. The Circus is close to major shopping and entertainment areas in the West End. Its status as a major traffic intersection has made Piccadilly Circus a busy meeting place and a tourist attraction in its own right. The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building on the northern side, as well as the Shaftesbury memorial fountain and statue of an archer popularly known as Eros (sometimes called The Angel of Christian Charity, but intended to be Anteros). It is surrounded by several noted buildings, including the London Pavilion and Criterion Theatre. Directly underneath the plaza is Piccadilly Circus tube station, part of the London Underground rapid transit system.

London 2008 - Leicester Square, Chinatown, Piccadilly Circus

Finally I succeeded getting to London after my one day delay in Salzburg. After arriving late on May 9, 2008, I got a good night's sleep at the Zetter Hotel, a hip boutique hotel in the Clerkenwell area. The next day, after a delicious breakfast, my travel partner Andrea and I got going early to start our discoveries. We walked past historic medieval St. John's Gate and admired the Victorian era Smithfield Market. From here I took my first ride on the Tube (London's famous subway system) to the historic St. Pancras Railway Station which is now the terminal for the Eurostar Trains, connecting London with the Continent. We then walked over to neighbourhing King's Cross Railway Station where we checked out Platform 9 3/4 of Harry Potter fame. Our next destination was the Portobello Market, an ecclectic mix of fresh vegetables, fruit, baked goods, enticing aromas from all sorts of delicious freshly made street food, funky clothes, furs and antiques. After our interview with Michael Williams, one of the organizers of the Notting Hill Carnival (a Caribbean-style carnival and Europe's biggest street party) we walked through the serene streets of Notting Hill and Kensington before we embarked on a brief tour of Little Beirut, a heavily middle-Eastern influenced area on Edgeware Road. A tube ride later we arrived at Hyde Park Corner where to my disappointment nobody was giving any speeches or ranting about anything. Only two older gentlemen were sitting on two soap boxes and ...

Summer: 4 - Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus

As our journey continues, we take one last look at the busy Oxford Circus before heading south down Regent Street. We pass several well-known stores (including the fabulous new Apple store) Its great seeing all the people in Regent Street milling around, window-shopping; some laden with bags, some noticing the camera and trying to seek attention! All too soon we are at Piccadilly Circus, famous for its Statue of Eros and also the great advert hoardings, most now digital movie screens which the camera lingers to watch for a while.

Soho Peep Show (Piccadilly Circus and Soho Past and Present) by ZEROKNOW1NOTHINGNESS

London's recent heritage is disappearing fast; our capital city is now merely a politically correct, heavily sanitized shadow of what it was like back in the 1960's, 70's and 80's... thanks mainly to the Brussel's/NWO-driven Westminster City Council. Half of the neons displays have been removed from Piccadilly Circus, historic buildings sand-blasted to look new, pigeon populations reduced, seedy dives are no more, and with them many colourful, wheeling-dealing characters seen no more. I have put on here my somewhat melancholic score 'The Last True Neons' for what is after all, a sad situation here.
