Dec. 28 - The Israeli airforce is using bird tracking radar technology to ensure safe aviation over Israeli skies, one of the busiest junctions of avian migration routes world-wide. In the past 25 years, 10 airforce planes have crashed in collisions with migrating birds, but the new system, developed at Tel Aviv University can now tell pilots where the birds will be in real time. The pilots who managed to land a crippled Russian Tu-154M airliner in the middle of Taiga forest are back in Moscow. Finally another day at the seaside! Only 2 gliders with Eric and Mark in Duo Discus OL and myself in ASW20L M5 braved the conditions which were stonking for the milk run between Sidmouth and Beer Head but with the large westerly component in the wind of 240/25 kts and an increasing chance of showers we didn't venture any further east. The low winter sun made the views all that more spectacular and our adrenaline deficit has been topped up for a little while longer. The cliffs are 20km almost due south from the gliding club and require us to be aero-towed down there. We also pass abeam Exeter International Airport and a quick call to them with our intentions helps minimise any disruption to their inbound traffic and facilitates good relations. Our club's increasing foray's to our rediscovered coastal play ground are expanding our knowledge of workable conditions and the strip at Farway Common gives a very safe landing option if we can't get high enough to make it back to the club.

The pilot had refused air traffic controllers' requests to let another plane, dangerously low on fuel, land. Here's the story. It was a flight that almost turned deadly. August 13, a Qatar Airways flight to Shanghai was dangerously low on fuel. With only 18 minutes of fuel left, the plane made a desperate mayday call to Shanghai's Hongqiao International Airport asking for permission to land. But they were repeatedly delayed because another plane refused to give way. Despite six requests from air traffic controllers in seven minutes, the pilot of a Juneyao Airlines flight would not give way to the other plane. Air traffic controllers scrambled to rearrange the landing order, and after a near collision, both planes landed safely. Now, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has revoked the license of the Juneyao pilot. He has been banned for life from flying in China. The planes had been circling due to bad weather. The Korean pilot of the Juneyao plane said he was also low on fuel, but investigations found that they had enough fuel left for an hour more of flight.

Monitored by scientists at Kessler Foundation, six people with spinal cord injuries tested Ekso, the new robotic exoskeleton from Ekso Bionics that enables wheelchair users to stand and walk. The six, each of whom has a different level of injury, participated in one week of preliminary testing in October 2011. In early 2012, the research team, headed by Gail Forrest, PhD, will commence a clinical trial in collaboration with Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. While the trial will focus on the benefits of Ekso in rehabilitation settings, Ekso Bionics plans to explore the potential for home and community use.
