A great value choice for defensive pistol, the Ruger P95 has proven to be a reliable and accurate performer throughout the years. Sometimes it can be had for under $300 which makes the P95 an incredible value. This is the KP95PR15 model using a ambidextrous hammer dropping, manual safety. Other features include a stainless steel investment cast slide, matte-finished reinforced-polymer frame, a Picatinny-style accessory rail, ambi mag release, 15 round steel magazine, and high contrast sights. I haven't shot the P95 but associates indicate it is reliable and accurate, although maybe not to Glock or Sig standards. Upsides would therefore include: good reliability and accuracy, lightweight (but still 5 oz heavier than Glock 17), easy take down, ergonomic feeling, good grip angle, good sights, good SA/DA trigger, durable, and acceptance of lighting products. Downsides might include: thicker than other designs, bulkier appearance, bulky slide release leaver, and goofy-looking safety design. But these are minor criticisms on a well-executed 9mm service type pistol. It will be hard to match its performance at this price point. The 9.6 oz Ruger LCP is another excellent choice as both an officer's backup gun or a civilian's primary carry gun. As stated in the review video, a 24/7 carry system generally has to be comfortable for its user to employ high percentage carry. And the LCP is indeed comfortable in carry. It is a close copy of the proven Kel-Tec P3-AT but does incorporate a couple of notable improvements: a memory groove above the magazine release, a convex shaped manual slide lock (should be function as last shot hold open as well!), a recessed mag release button, more precise molding on frame (glass-filled nylon), excellent build quality, and a slightly smoother trigger. For these reasons I do slightly prefer the Ruger LCP over the Kel-Tec P3-AT (with more competitors on the way) since their cost is similar. But the LCP also shares several of the design limitations inherent in these sub-compact polymer pistols: like low contrast milled-in sights, stiff DAO trigger, and mag release that can be easily actuated with the thumb. The sights are unimpressive and provide little precision. But with proper trigger control, the Ruger LCP with its 2.75 barrel is capable of impressive accuracy for its category. Expect to spend some time mastering this trigger and learning to maintain sight picture throughout the pull (rec. dry fire practice with snap caps for this). Rapid firing benchrest groups with the LCP (or any tiny pistol) is pretty much impossible but rounds can easily be kept into a plate <b>...</b>

This polymer Sig weighs less than the aluminum framed 200-series. But not by a lot; maybe a couple of ounces. I am always flabbergasted at manufacturers who produce a polymer pistol and it ends up weighing near 30 ounces. But once I get past THAT, things turn brighter on the Sig SP2022 in TNP testing...in fact it was downright surprising to me how well this gun ran. It is the successor to the marginally successful Sig Pro 2340, SP2009 series and is better. Better doesn't mean perfect however as the earlier SP2022s, with some bad parts and sloppy QC from Sig US had reliability issues. Upon its reintroduction, Sig got smart and had the gun made in Germany from 2008 on and those models seem to be 100% with good reports from various users. The gun shown and tested here is a good example of that. After 100s of rounds, the internal extractor equipped 9mm 2022 ran like a champ (even with Blazer aluminum cased ammo) and also showed very impressive accuracy. It is easily capable of 2"-3" groups at 25 yds. Ergonomics are excellent with swappable grip panels (shown), great night sights, a decent trigger, squared and roomy trigger guard, standard Picatinny rail, perfect slide serrations, easily accessed slide release lever, and the ideal Sig grip angle. Take down is a snap (shown). I prefer the standard DA/SA Sig trigger for its speed, safety, and precision and the SP2022 happily includes it. Firepower in this SP2022 is an adequate 15 rds but you can run extended capacity MecGar mags <b>...</b>

Shooting excellent Glock 17, my reference pistol for other 9mm autos. This video is the shooting proof of my previous table top review series of the G17. Here I take through three rounds of shooting at about 10 yards to somewhat demonstrate its capabilities. You will see the Glock 17 to be accurate and fast...even with my less than perfect skills. This specific Glock, on loan, has some common sense and helpful mods: 3.5 lb connector to lighten trigger, a Glock 34 extended mag release, Decal Grip in stippled rubber, Glock 34 extended mag release (sharp edges sanded), and the excellent Meprolight tritium sights. In this FAQ video I discuss my reasons as to why I chose the Glock pistol over the other popular polymer pistols on the market. I actually have a theory as to why I feel the Glock improves my performance over other pistols.

Why Glock 01 ssdsurf

In the role of combat sidearm, the CZ 75 SP-01 will excel. For me it stands out in the CZ lineup due to its light carry weight of 28.5 ounces (empty with magazine). For a full size service pistol with a 4.7" barrel and 18+1 rounds standard, that is a solid achievement. It opens up lots of POUs with this gun. Some may prefer the P-07 Duty model for its weight as well but it does not offer the longer sight radius and extra velocity of the Phantom. The Phantom as of mid-2010 is my top pick out of the line for use in the sidearm role. It will also make an excellent home defense, officers primary, WROL, or even competition handgun (steel SP-01 may be better in that POU). It inherits and benefits from the CZ lineage that established such a foothold in the 1980s (discussed). Back then the CZ 75 won over thousands of fans for its excellent grip, higher magazine capacity, great durability and reliability, and high accuracy. It established a mystique as well that for many still continues to this day. Those attributes are all found in the SP-01 Phantom. I however cannot say that it is better than the competing polymer designs of Springfield XD/XDM, Glock, Sig 250 series, S&W M&P series, FNP/FNX series, Ruger SR9, H&K USP/P series, etc. It simply achieves their same high levels of performance in a handsome form factor that appeals to DA/SA lockwork aficionados like myself. The transition in this lockwork from double action fire to single action fire may throw off some proponents of <b>...</b>

The Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm is an advanced polymer pistol design that competes well with proven reliable designs like Glock and Sig. Upsides include a very low bore axis, Novak low profile sights, impressive magazine capacity (17 rds in 9mm!), excellent durability, simple takedown, threaded barrel options (like this Spec-Ops model), reinforced polymer frame, outstanding ergos (with interchangeable backstraps), black Melonite-finished SS slide and a quality build throughout. Smith and Wesson flat out knows how to make guns and the MP9 is no exception. The M&P pistol is offered in a variety of frame sizes, slide lengths, finishes, and calibers. It has just a few downsides and they are minor: 3 ounces heavier than the Glock 17 standard (28.2 vs 25.2 oz) and no checkering on the front trigger guard. It still is amassing its own track record and time will be the best judge as whether the SW MP9 will rise to the level of durability that the Glock design has established but all indications are positive. Walther P99 AS 9x19mm Luger! Yes this is the real deal. No dumb airsoft. Not a toy. This is "it can kill version", all you children out there. This pistol style has been copied so much in firearms and toy/sport market. But as the real deal, it is the most awesome. I forgot to mention the interchangeable back straps that help with palm sizes. This is my second Youtube vid, so excuse my lack of style and class. Mav Grade scale: 1 = Do not buy, don't bet your life 2 = Good as a collector...only 3 = Only if you have to, may not carry 4 = Good buy, but there are better, may carry 5 = Great value, you can bet your life on it, will carry 6 = Buy this gun, will carry, will enhance capablity, super value. P99 AS 9MM = 6 This pistol is almost like a Glock mated w/ an HK and came out w/ something awesome and that's essentially what it is. The trigger in SA is extreamly crips and helps you stage your trigger for follow up shots. Accuracy is extraordinary for a polymer pistol and the AS trigger is good for those who don't trust carrying in SA but still want the ability later with out buying a different pistol. There is not much to improve on this pistol except for add-ons like tritium sights and lighting.

My Smith&Wesson M&P has passed 10000 rounds. Not a single hicup. I have to say that these are some of the best polymer pistols out there. Great choice if anybody has one.
