Gregg Hano Popular Science

New York Times Reports: Online Advertising as Entertainment! Amazing but true, folks are watching advertising on their PC's as a form of entertainment, according to today's advertising column by Stuart Elliott. Stuart's article is about veryfunnyads.com and the emerging trend of branded video on the web. Viewers will watch commercials for fun and their own benefit, expects Barry Soicher of AdPerk, the new advertising network. The company provides a platform for magazine publishers to offer subscriptions to opt-in visitors who watch a certain number of clips which are ads and branded content. The AdPerk system just went up on the Popular Science home page. Here's Popular Science publisher Gregg Hano who explains how AdPerk works -- and shows an entertaining clip of a very cool new LG washing machine. -- Andy Plesser Coming Clean: AdPerk is a public relations client of Plesser Holland. Here's the PopSci radio ready to play. I've replaced all the paper caps and electrolytics, removed any petrified rubber wiring and double-checked all the battery cables. I think I've cured all the intermittents at this point. The A battery hanging out of the case is what should be in there, an Eveready 746. However, it doesn't fit, so I suspect the builder used a smaller battery. In any event, I've rigged it up in order to try the set out.

Mag+ live with Popular Science+

Popular Science + is the first digital magazine to emerge from Bonniers Mag+, an ongoing project across all Bonnier titles in the US and Europe to rethink the way magazines can be read on a new generation of full-color, touchscreen tablet devices. Popular Science+ is a new way of experiencing magazines on digital devices and a first step toward our vision of what digital magazine reading can be. Mag+, Bonniers digital magazine platform, is a project that began months ago in a collaboration between Bonniers global R&D task force and BERG, a London-based design studio. Our goal has been to preserve all the qualities that make magazines such a powerful, popular medium—inspired packaging of carefully curated content by a team of expert editors, delivered in a visually dazzling issue with a beginning, middle and end—and at the same time to reinvent it in a way that makes it come to life on the iPads screen. Read more about Mag+ and join the conversation about the future of digital magazines at bonnier.com/betalab Were excited to have a conversation with you to find out what you think of the Mag+ platform and the Popular Science+. Well base our changes and upgrades on your feedback, so please give us your thoughts.

Heikegani in Cosmos by Carl Sagan

Heikegani (平家蟹, ヘイケガニ) is a species of crab native to Japan, with a shell that bears a pattern resembling a human face. It is locally believed that these crabs are reincarnations of the spirits of the Heike warriors defeated at the Battle of Dan-no-ura as told in the Heike Monogatari ("The Tale of the Heike"). The pattern of ridges on the carapace serves a very functional purpose as sites of muscle attachment. Similar patterns are found on species in many parts of the world, including fossilized remains. Heikegani were used by Carl Sagan in his popular science television show Cosmos: A Personal Voyage as an example of unintentional artificial selection. However, some experts have questioned this. The story goes that the crabs with shells resembling Samurai were thrown back, while those not resembling Samurai were eaten, giving the former a greater chance of reproducing. [1] However, the maximum width of adult heikegani crabs is only about 30 mm (1.2 inches), so some fishermen throw these crabs back into the sea regardless of appearance. But smaller specimens may have been eaten in the past, before mass fishing. It is difficult to know for sure how much of the crab's shape and quantity has been dictated by artificial selection. Cloud in a Bottle - Cool Science Experiment

Check out this and other cool science experiments at www.stevespanglerscience.com Have you ever wondered how clouds form? Clouds are formed when water vapor is cooled enough to form tiny water droplets. This is exactly what happens when moist air rises in the atmosphere, cools, and water droplets form into clouds. Making your own cloud is a popular experiment in many science books, but you should know that the results are not very striking. Yes, you'll see a very faint cloud (very faint), but it's a little tricky. About Steve Spangler Science... Sixth Sense - Pranav Mistry

SixthSense is a wearable gestural interface device that augments the physical world with digital information and lets people use natural hand gestures to interact with that information. It was developed by Pranav Mistry, a PhD student in the Fluid Interfaces Group at the MIT Media Lab. The SixthSense prototype implements several applications that demonstrate the usefulness, viability and flexibility of the system. The map application lets the user navigate a map displayed on a nearby surface using hand gestures, similar to gestures supported by multi-touch based systems, letting the user zoom in, zoom out or pan using intuitive hand movements. The drawing application lets the user draw on any surface by tracking the fingertip movements of the users index finger. SixthSense also recognizes users freehand gestures (postures). For example, it implements a gestural camera that takes photos of the scene the user is looking at by detecting the framing gesture. The user can stop by any surface or wall and flick through the photos he/she has taken. SixthSense also lets the user draw icons or symbols in the air using the movement of the index finger and recognizes those symbols as interaction instructions. For example, drawing a magnifying glass symbol takes the user to the map application or drawing an @ symbol lets the user check his mail. The SixthSense system also augments physical objects the user is interacting with by projecting more information about these objects ...

Our Place in the Universe - Carl Sagan

A look at our place in the Universe. An edited version, taken from the award winning TV series "Cosmos", by American Astronomer, Carl Sagan. Here we look at our place in the Universe, and find that we are in no way, the center of our Universe, ...we are not even the center of our own galaxy, the Milky Way;....nor our own solar system. It is only a delusion, to kid ourselves that the stars rise and set for us. That we are the reason there is a Universe. I believe Carl Sagan said it best when he says "The Universe is not suppose to be in perfect harmony with human ambition." Carl Edward Sagan was an American astronomer and astrochemist and a highly successful popularizer of astronomy, astrophysics, and other natural sciences. He is world-famous for writing popular science books and for co-writing and presenting the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which has been seen by more than 600 million people in over 60 countries, making it the most widely watched PBS program in history.
