Leoš Janáček - String Quartet No. 1, 'Kreutzer Sonata' (1 of 2)

"I was imagining a poor woman, tormented and run down, just like the one the Russian writer Tolstoy describes in his Kreutzer Sonata", Janáček confided in one of his letters to his young friend Kamila Stösslová. In the music of the quartet is depicted psychological drama containing moments of conflict as well as emotional outbursts, passionate work rush towards catharsis and to final climax. Using a principle of thematic montage, the quartet almost abandons the fields of traditional harmony, homophony and counterpoint and instead makes free with the varied sonic factors typical of Janáček, including his 'trademark' modal inflections.

1.Franz Schubert D. 887 Last Quartet No. 15 in G major I. Movement

Hungarian String Quartet plays The (Last) String Quartet No. 15 in G major, D. 887, was written by Franz Schubert in June 1826. It was not published until 1851, as opus posth. 161. The quartet is accepted as the master point of Schubert's sense of music in his short life as well as his early and surprising development as the world's first truly modern artist leaving great influence on almost a century ahead; Gustav Mahler (his 6th symphony's major/minor exchanges) and Bela Bartok (his string quartets). The piece is in four movements, and is about 45 minutes long: 1. Allegro molto moderato (G major, in 3/4 time) 2. Andante un poco moto (E minor, in common time) 3. Scherzo: Allegro vivace (B minor, in 3/4 time) Trio: Allegretto (G major) 4. Allegro assai (G major, in 6/8 time) I. Allegro molto moderato As the first movement's Allegro molto moderato begins alternate major and minor chords (in a characteristic dotted rhythm many forms of which will be heard throughout the quartet) and modes dizzyingly, a few bars for each at a time, and the movement becomes more stable only with the introduction of the main lyrical theme at bar fourteen. The first movement is riddled with tremolandi, which also lead into the repeat of the exposition, and contains several other new departures for the composer. This may include the use of a motive in triplets to connect the first and second main groups of this sonata form; the second group opens, exactly as happens in the later-written String <b>...</b>

Ludwig Van Beethoven - Grosse Fuge, Op. 133, Part I

As I promised to upload more pieces, please welcome Ludwig Van Beethoven and his Große Fuge(Grosse Fuge), Opus 133! He wrote this piece when he was completely deaf a short time before he died, in 1825-1826. The Große Fuge is a single-movement composition for string quartet by Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven originally composed the massive fugue as the final movement of his String Quartet No. 13 (Op. 130). However, the Fugue was so demanding of contemporary performers and unpopular with audiences that Beethoven's publisher urged him to write a new finale for the string quartet. Beethoven, notorious for his stubborn personality and indifference to public opinion or taste, acquiesced to his publisher's request on this occasion and published the Fugue as a separate opus number, opus 133. He then wrote a finale that replaced the Fugue, which is considerably lighter in character, more akin to the other movements of the opus 130 quartet. Today, performances of the quartet include either the Fugue or its replacement movement. en.wikipedia.org This is my third video, after Pachelbel's Canon: youtube.com and Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre: youtube.com I see you enjoy the pieces from your very lovely comments. It encourages me to upload more^^ BTW, this(the Fuge) is one of my favorites. I have first heard this piece in the movie "Copying Beethoven". I enjoyed the movie very much, highly recommended. Really, one of the bests^^ Cast: Diane Kruger -- Anna Holtz Ed Harris -- Ludwig van <b>...</b>
