On December 5th, 2010 we recorded our first Microphone Preamp Comparison Test. We were joined by Okayan on his acoustic guitar, playing his original song "Rainbow Dew". We recorded through a Chandler Limited TG2, a Chandler Limited Germanium, a Chameleon Labs 7602, a Focusrite Red 6, a Grace Design 201, a Sound Devices MP-1 and the onboard preamps on the TC Electronics Konnekt 24D and the Yamaha 02R. You get an amazing Clean channel that resembles in a lot of ways the best Fenders I've played, and a double gain staged (Crunch and Lead) Drive channel with shared EQ. On top of that you're also offered a choice of Line output (see accompanying video) or Cab Sim output (this video) AND an Effects Loop (series). Did I mention that there's a tube in there to keep the sound cozy? There is that as well. All in the space of a standard stomp-box. The SS-11's come in two flavours: This one, the SS-11A, is voiced for Classic Rock or bluesier stuff. There is also an SS-11B voiced for meaner brootalz type music (demo coming shortly.) In this video I perform an A/B comparison between 5 different tube brands inside the ART Tube MP preamp. All parameters such as input level etc. are kept identical between tests. If you have decent speakers and if you listen enough times you learn to CLEARLY hear the differences between the tubes. Interestingly the best sounding tube was the one that originally came with my OLDER model Tube MP. I believe that the improvement in sound is due to the tube itself. ART claims to optimize the circuit somewhat around the particular tube they are using at the time but I've been around long enough to know that some tubes just sound a lot better than others and that in general vintage tubes sound a lot better and were better made.

This ART usb device has a lot of great features, including XLR/1/4 inputs, phantom power, headphone amplifier, and USB audio interface. That's a lot of features for such a small device. It's a tube mic pre! No, it's a solid-state mic pre! Stop, you're both right! It's the Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity dual-path microphone preamplifier, and it's everything to everyone. Well, for the most part it is. The 710 Twin-Finity never strays far from the silky, flattering quality with which UA mic pre's are most commonly associated, but the 710 does go a bit further. This half-rack unit features two parallel, discrete gain stages — one based on their classic tube preamps, one utilizing a transistor circuit. The two voice can be blended together with the use of a continuously variable control on the front of the unit, thus offer a near-infinite pallet of tonal variety.
