This is more or less the completion of my 150G in which the Altum will finish growing up in. I expect to keep them in this tank for the next two years during which hopefully, we will have pair formation. What will happen if Joao and Fatima (the Heckels) decide its time to have kids? for now all I can say is that I will do my best to support them. They asked for a flat panel TV to watch their team in the World Cup and we are all wearing Brazil parafernalia when we walk in front of the aquarium. I'll let you know if it works. Juan Jose (the L128), decided to stay in his "hamaca" (hammock) for this one...he asked us to forgive him because he was pretty busy the last 24hrs finishing up all algae on the glasses. He also is waiting to square out an online date with a nice blue girl...remember, the guy widowed a month ago. The altum also have names...the big guy is Simon (for Bolivar) who observes, keeping an eye on the other big fella who seems to be the leader of the pack (he's Hugo...guess for who?), then we have Ravell, Granier, Patricia, Marianela (oppositionists who get beaten up all the time!) and a few others...several of the real actors are now living in Colombia or Miami. The spunkiest one is Yaya (in honor of my wife)...she'll shred your fins when the lights go out...to be expected from a Yekwana Squaw!

There is a big male(black) wich is recognized as the dominant male and another one wich very often claims the title. Very often battles betwen the two can be seen in the aquarium.

Angelfish in the fishkeeping hobby: A group of Pterophyllum Altum.Angelfish are one of the most commonly kept freshwater aquarium fish, as well as the most commonly kept cichlid. They are prized for their unique shape, color and behavior. Many hobbyists consider angelfish to be a relatively intelligent fish, able to recognize their owners. Species: The most commonly kept species in the aquarium is Pterophyllum scalare. Most of the individuals the aquarium trade are captive-bred. Sometimes, Pterophyllum altum is available. Captive bred P. altum are usually not available. Pterophyllum leopoldi is the hardest to find in the trade. Care: Angelfish are kept in a warm aquarium, ideally around 80 °F (27 °C). They will do best if fed a mixture of flake, frozen and live food. Care should be taken to not overfeed, they will continue to eat even what they do not need to. This will lead to a buildup of fats resulting in inactivity and early death. Angelfish will do best if kept in an acidic environment, pH should be below 7.5 (note: 7.5 is still slightly alkaline - acidic is defined as below 7.0). All angelfish will prefer water with a pH of at most 7.0. Though most Pterophyllum scalare will thrive in a wide range of pH values. The Pinoy angelfish phenotype or variety results from the combination of the dark/black and blue traits/mutations. The dark/black trait is dominant while the blue trait is recessive. The blue trait expresses basically on the crown, back and unpaired fins. The lower two thirds of the body basically has very minimal or no blue expression. This blue "color"is a domestic mutation which is different from the blue colors expressed in wild angelfish. The domestic blue and wild blue colors can combine and produce bluer angelfish. Although the Pinoy angelfish is the combination of the dark/black and blue traits, there will be variations in overall color due to the pressence of other colors, yellow, orange and red... The Ghost phenotype refers to the complete/incomplete loss of body stripes due the heterozygous stripeless/blushing mutation.

P. scalare is relatively easy to breed in the aquarium, although one of the results of generations of inbreeding is that many breeds have almost completely lost their rearing instincts resulting in the tendency of the parents to eat their young. In addition, it is very difficult to accurately identify the gender of any individual until they are nearly ready to breed. Angelfish pairs form long-term relationships where each individual will protect the other from threats and potential suitors. Upon the death or removal of one of the mated pair, breeders have experienced both the total refusal of the remaining mate to pair up with any other angelfish and successful breeding with subsequent mates.....this video was recorded at Kerala Aqua Ventures International limited.
