Flautist Holly Cook - Xiao Flute - Purple Bamboo Melody Chinese Traditional

www.hollycook.co.uk Flautist Holly Cook, Xiao Flute & Tony Hinnigan, Octave Mandolin Perform Purple Bamboo Melody is a traditional Chinese operatic melody. It is often played in the opera on the dizi, a popular Chinese transverse flute with a membrane. Purple Bamboo Melody is also often played as a solo piece or in small ensembles, and slightly different versions exist depending upon which instrument it is played. Todays version is being performed on the xiao and octave mandolin, which imitates the Chinese string instrument the jang. The xiao is a vertical notch flute which has a mellow tone. The modern xiao is a direct descendent of the ancient instrument, one of the earliest flutes in Asia, and from which the popular Japanese shakuhachi was derived from in the 8th Century. a film by cineman8 Holly Cook has recently graduated with a Masters degree in performance at Trinity College of Music, where she was awarded a Leverhulme Orchestral Mentorship Award for study. Holly studied flute with Anna Noakes and ethnic flutes with Andy Findon and Tony Hinnigan. Beginner Harp - The Purple Bamboo

My first attempt at filming this one, and on a borrowed pedal harp too! Again, I need to work on the rhythm, but the notes are in the right place! This one reminds me of my days doing martial arts, many moons ago, when we used to watch Hong Kong Kung Fu movies back to back.
Purple Bamboo Dizi Flute

Just a quick noodling around video, Since I haven't done much with my new Dizi that my old man got me back late last year. This ones allot nicer (as you can see and hear) then my previous Dizi flutes. Now I've also put on the Dimo, instead of using scotch tape.. makes a huge difference in tone, but is also really hard to play (since getting the reed on right and whatnot affects playability!). Enjoy the relaxing sounds of the Dizi. DFZ
